Stan - captured, insignificantly, in an insignificant image, at an insignificant moment

“The Insignificant is Significant”, A Library and Art Installation, a continuation of the series, “The Quiet and Ugly Artist (Hanoi, 1965-2015)”.

Assisting and creating libraries is part of my art practice.

During my art residencies, I continue to bring books and materials, art work, maps, magazines and journals, CDs, DVDs, and photos to the community centers in Adugyama, Ashanti Region Ghana and Sisid-anejo, Cañar, Ecuador. I also give a variety of art books, journals, and materials to fellow artists and art spaces.

In Accra, Ghana, I bring art books and magazines to The Nubuke Foundation and The Center for Contemporary Art, Ghana. In Cuenca, Ecuador, I'm connected to In-Arte Contemporáneo and bring art magazines and information. In Hanoi, I have provided various art publications and books to Cuci Fine Art, Chay Art, and Chaap Collective.

I bring art publications, art work, and music created by friends and colleagues of mine. I document their work in these different communities, creating another form of connection and awareness.

I consider this a weaving project, a form of sharing that can have many on-going effects. –Daniel Kerkhoff, www.danielkerkhoff.com

Half past midnight. Wide awake. Insignificant feelings overlap with all these heavy thoughts. The sensation of the cool breeze and the beauty of the twinkling stars, all that’s underneath is a deep, open mind. Trees danced with the wind, while my thoughts dance around my being. Bats, they fly above me. While the enormous, yellow moon flies above them. I turn around, I see nothing. Just like a cave without any last page. Surrounded by the coldness of night, I stare at the sky. All is peaceful. All is calm. All is filled with endless dreams. Travelling through the road where everything is pointless, seems like an everlasting book that never started, and never will end. The flat earth with all its mortals, will come to a plot like this.

It’s dawn. And the sun, it’s creeping slowly into the wide, beautiful horizon. Watching as a new day would unfold before me. Watching as every moment becomes what it was destined to be. Watching as individuals would fall together or fall apart. Staring at a vacant world. Breathing as my heart would beat. Regretting. And still thanking. Over the top. Or the worst there ever was. I blink as I’m waiting for the night to come once again.

Have no idea where or what this temple was. All I know is that it was on our way back to the hotel and we decided to hope off our bikes and explore one of the last random temples of the day.

Day 18:

Both this box and I are completely empty on the inside. The difference is that this box that sits beside me can be filled with many glorious items, it can be useful. As for me I must remain empty, I must remain insignificant.

I feel stupid, stuck in a catch-22 as I lift the hot dog up towards my ugly little insignificant face with its pot marked forehead (a reminder of the stroke I had almost 2 years ago now). My eyes instinctually close as I smell the sweet aroma of relish and ketchup mixed with the sickening aura of oily hot dog flesh that likely sat on the rollers of the @cineplexmovies hot dog cooker before being stuffed into a soft warm bun, wrapped in a piece of paper foil lined on the outside to suck in the heat of the warmer it sat in before being rescued by a food service worker who handed it to me. The bun has a slight crunch like the morning toast I enjoy, just a little crisp but not browned deeply. My teeth slice through it, and chew as I hold the dog with my left hand, snapping photos with my iPhone cradled in my right. It’s hard to take selfies with the forward facing camera, as there’s no way to see it on the screen.

I came today to see Alfred Hitchcock’s NORTH BY NORTHWEST, a film I first saw in @engstromstan’s grade 9 class. I think it was an English class, although it might have been drama as I was fortunate enough to study both with him. It was very much the first time I seriously thought about films that had been made before I was born, a new generation of filmmakers for me to discover, an older generation who honed their craft and skills decades before I ever wandered the Earth. Hitchcock, a pioneer of cinema and of the thriller. NORTH BY NORTHWEST, a forefather of the contemporary action classics I knew, of films like DIE HARD.

I got to the theatre around 330pm, after having slept most of the day, my persistent cough having kept me up most of the night and leaving me frustrated enough that I needed to escape the confines of my bed. I ate the hot dog and downed a cup of tea before getting my popcorn, @cocacola, and a bag of @reeses chocolate covered peanuts. I need to stop eating this junk but I keep doing it.

The film was awesome to see. Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint made a great team, although I wonder if Saint’s character could have had more agency. An agency I should have too, when it comes to the food I choose to consume.

i love this picture. when two hearts meet, it shows - even in the most minimal and insignificant way. yet we can see it right through them.

these two friends of mine are getting married in about two weeks time, heading to paris and london for their honeymoon and then sharing a wonderful life together as one. i wish them well and cheers to a fantastic wedding and a blissful marriage!

the original picture was shot by another friend of mine and his other pictures can be seen on his flickr website - www.flickr.com/photos/eleveninth/

i think he did a great job in capturing this moment of infinite love and understated passion, between these two lovers.

with permission from the photographer himself, i "borrowed" the original lovely shot and did some minor editing on my own, to try and "capture" the emotion of these young lovers, eager to start their journey together.

it may look imperfect to some due to the pixelated image, the blurry poladroid effect, the darkened background or even the colours. but i prefer it this way - nothing needs to be perfect if the emotion is right all along =)

congratulations to adi & liz!

People are small, but not insignificant.

More than Meets the Eye

In a place of dramatic views, the scene before you may seem insignificant. A closer look, however, reveals more than meets the eye.

New River Gorge National River lies at the core of the Appalachian Mountain range, one of the largest expanses of relatively unbroken forests in the world. Varied topography combined with a river corridor running south to north creates conditions ripe for variety. With over 1,300 species of plants, including 100 different species of trees, the New River is the most botanically diverse river system in the central and southern Appalachian Mountains.

Take a closer look as you explore the gorge and consider your own significance in the diversity that surrounds you.

Every Species Counts

Wood warblers, vireos and thrushes that winter in the tropics, migrate to the New River area and build their nests here. Around 200 species of birds depend on these forests for habitat.

Allegheny woodrats are in decline throughout most of their range but have healthy populations in New River Gorge. The forest provides food and the dense understory provides protection from flying predators.

Not all bats live in caves. Of the 10 bat species that live in the park, the Hoary bat and two others roost in this forest under loose tree bark, in between bark furrows, and in dead tree cavities.

The Red eft is one of 34 species of salamanders in West Virginia, a state with one of the most diverse populations worldwide. Permeable skin, gelatinous eggs, and gilled larvae make amphibians prone to absorbing pollutants. A diverse population can indicate a healthy ecosystem.

As environmental conditions change, how will plant and animal diversity numbers stack up? Only time will tell. Come back and see this dynamic ecosystem in action.

We are an insignificant part of the world, but we don't seem to realise.

Just playing around, and another insignificant day.

insignificant to anyone who styles their hair on a daily basis, but not for me who BLOW DRYED this mess and ended up with swoop bangs and wore it like this to work so that it LOOKS like some sort of "style" choice. I went for a massage at lunch which always mucks up my hair, so now I need to post the 'after'.

Utterly insignificant in comparison, human offer prayers to the mighty hero.

Don't Close Your Eyes

as i hear the -

leaves crash to the wind

walls of echoes

paint my deserted room

the linen adrift

flying floating

as cold whispers

wrap my whole being... [continue]

There are times when something quite ordinary and seemingly insignificant, can provide profound insights and is capable of stirring emotions in a way, which may not always be able to be described in just art. Can less necessarily be more? We live in a visual world. How much do our surroundings and our inner depth affect our response to what we see? Can a simple word speak as loudly as a vivid dream, or even more so?

These are just some of the avenues which my works attempt to address, through elements of the known and unknown, clarity and vagueness, light and dark and spatial ambiguities.

My paintings are for contemplation. Search your soul through them.

Shaela works in a wide variety of mediums and forms. As a fine artist, she likes to explore surrealist, abstract and conceptual painting approaches, she also works intricately with calligraphy with her own stylistic scripts. Her paintings are uniquely tied to her belief, spirituality and the heightened awareness of life and the meaning of struggle..

I found this tiny flower near the fence in our backyard, its much smaller than it seems in this photo. Even though we might think something as small as this is an unimportant part of nature, or life, but it has been created for a reason. This tiny little flower was standing there, it seemed so confident and full of pride, and at that very moment, I wished I were in its place.
