This strange looking insect is neither a scorpion or a fly and is completely harmless. It scavenges around in the undergrowth looking for dead insects to feed on. Seen in Dunwich, Suffolk.

In folklore, often used to predict the coming Winter weather. The longer the orange colored band, the milder the Winter! Whether there is any merit to this is a matter for speculation. However, we who have been brought up on this bit of folklore, subscribe to its veracity! If this critter is correct, we will have a slightly milder Winter.

I'm not going to get into photographing insects. Don't have the lens for it and that's the easy part... don't know the first thing about them.. and as my daughter points out, "better not start that as well, you don't have enough time left Dad". But this little guy has sort of earned his spot. I take coffee and a bit of breakfast out the back, he'd landed in the dogs water bowl and was in all sorts of trouble. Lifted him out and he sat on the back of my thumb for ages, wouldn't move.... don't think he had much strength left. Maybe the sun energised him because eventually he started to brush the water off with his back legs. Finally persuaded that a leaf might be the way to go, when I came out later he was back to life and on the handrail... above the water bowl..
