One of the old buildings on the Blue Plaque trail in Cowbridge, South Wales.
The Bear was Cowbridge's principal inn in the 18C, having an elegant assembly room for important meetings and entertainments. It was where the mail coaches to and from London stopped to change horses. Previously it had been a private house, of late medieval date, belonging to the squires of Llanmihangel Place. Medieval features are still visible (especially the stone-vaulted undercroft) but the present street frontage dates from the 18C.

The hotel is among the earliest examples of the type of rustic park lodges common in state and national parks. It was designed by the New York City firm of Tooker & Marsh in a style strongly influenced by the Adirondack Great Camps.
At various times during the 1930s and 40s, the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team, the New York Giants football team and the New York Knickerbockers basketball team made the inn and adjacent athletic facilities their training headquarters. Also during this period, entertainment headliners included Harry James and Tommy Dorsey, and some believe Kate Smith wrote her 1931 theme song "When the Moon Comes Over the Mountain" while at the inn.

This is part of the inn at Serenbe.
I went to see the Serenbe community south of Atlanta with my friend Jessica. It's a beautiful area. Taken May 11, 2008.
Built in 1849 by Judge John A. Ripley, this stage coach stop and tavern served travelers and farmers in Des Moines County Iowa. Local Indians also visited here. Each room was heated by an iron stove, instead of the traditional fireplaces of the time. It later became an antique store and currently sits abandoned.
Cozy Inn in Salina, Kansas, sells hamburgers by the sack. The tiny burgers are prepared on the same 95 year old grill used since the restaurant opened in 1922. The tiny restaurant has only 6 seats along an old counter covered with news clippings about the Cozy Inn from over many years. The interior of the restaurant always smells like hamburger and onions, so if you don't care to smell the same, you should use the walkup window.
The Cozy Inn serves all of their burgers with onions and they do not offer cheese. Tradition is that an employee was once fired for adding cheese. The burgers are $1.09, with doubles a $1.89. The only items sold in the Cozy Inn are 90% lean hamburgers, potato ships, soda, coffee hot chocolate and Cozy Inn souvenirs. Purchased by the sack, the burgers are sometimes unwrapped, just stacked in the Cozy Inn brown paper sack.
The original owners once tried replacing the tiny, 18 by 36 inch cast iron grill with a new grill. But the regulars complained that the hamburgers just didn't taste the same, and they had to bring the old one back.
The Cozy Inn changed hands a few years ago. The new owner kept things much the same, except the hamburgers are now a little bigger: 16 to the pound, down from 25.
But ultimately, the attraction of the Cozy Inn is more about the history and atmosphere, than about the food.
The Benbow Historic Inn, a Garberville resort in the redwoods, was designed by architect Albert Farr, who was most noted for The Wolf House—the home he designed for author Jack London in Glen Ellen, CA. Farr was commissioned by the Benbow family to create the cornerstone for the resort community they intended to build in their 1,290 acre valley.
The “Hotel Benbow” (as it was originally called) opened to the public in July of 1926. Built by the Benbow family—nine talented brothers and sisters who also constructed the Benbow Dam, Power Company, and later, the Golf Course and RV Park. The hotel became a popular destination for motoring tourists traveling up the newly-completed Redwood Highway.
The combination of seclusion and elegant hospitality also served as quite an attraction for the early Hollywood elite. Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, Alan Ladd, Charles Laughton, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, Joan Fontaine, Basil Rathbone were all patrons of the Inn. Dignitaries such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover and Lord Halifax also enjoyed the Benbow hospitality.
The Painted Desert Inn was built in 1924 by Herbert Lore. Originally designed for purposes of lodging and other tourist services, such as meals and shopping, the inn was purchased by the Painted Desert National Monument in 1936.

Petrified Forest National Park
Holbrook, Arizona
Dec 2016
Built in 1857. It originally operated as the "Sleeping Bear House". The inn primarily served lumberjacks and dock workers in its early days. It later would be popular among tourists visiting the area. As business declined the the inn would later close in 1973. This building (and the rest of the town) would later be purchased by the National Park Service and restored. Sadly the inn is still closed to this day but it may reopen again in the near future.
Glen Haven, Michigan
Nestled right on the shores of the stunning Loch Eck—considered by many to be the prettiest loch in all of Scotland—sits the charming Coylet Inn near Dunoon.
This building is steeped in local heritage. Dating all the way back to the 17th century, it originally served as a vital coaching inn, providing a welcome stop for travelers navigating the Cowal Peninsula. Back then, it was known simply as "The Loch Eck Inn," a name it held for many years before becoming The Coylet. It’s a beautiful spot where centuries of history meet an incredible landscape
Braunau on the Inn is a nice historic city in Austria -
but suffers hard by being the birthplace of Adolf Hitler. The house is marked by a big granite stone from KZ Mauthausen near Linz.
Recently the Austrian authorities decided to transform this house into a police station. Hopefully a way to avoid Nazi pilgrimage to this place, and hopefully a good way to handle this kind of history and "heritage".
Say no to fascism, antisemitism, nationalism, racism - stand up for human rights and democracy - much endangered in these times - even in the motherlands of democracy...
Taken during a sudden blizzard, The Drovers Inn Hotel, Inverarnan near Loch lomond is probably the most famous inn and pub in Scotland. This 300 year old inn is situated on the A82 just past Ardlui at the top of the loch.
This is The Mermaid Inn referred to in my previous photo. Rye was once a thriving port at the head of an embayment of the English Channel, and almost entirely surrounded by the sea. Over the subsequent centuries, the coastline has moved further away due to a combination of natural silting up from storm damage, changes in the flow of the River Rother, and tidal changes, along with deliberate land reclamation from the sea. Rye’s historical association with the sea has included providing ships for the service of the Crown in time of war, and being involved in smuggling.
Located on Mermaid Street, which was once the town's main road, the current building dates from 1420 and has 16th-century additions in the Tudor style, but cellars built in 1156 survive. As mentioned in the commentary attached to the photo of The Old Bell the Mermaid Inn has a strong connection with the notorious Hawkhurst Gang of smugglers, who used it in the 1730s and 1740s as one of their strongholds. Some of the smugglers, their mistresses and other characters are reported to haunt the inn, in fact the events in one room have been described as "one of the most well-organised ghostly scenarios anywhere”.
The inn has rooms for overnight guests but there is no way my wife would stay there!
Day 221
Phil took me to the Salutation Inn in Ham. It has won several CAMERA awards including National Pub of the Year in 2014 and Gloucestershire CAMRA Pub of the Year 2014 & 2015. It is a real treat coming here!
We stayed the night at the Berkely Arms and visited a couple of pubs in the town, including the one at the hotel. For a Sunday night, it was surprisingly busy!
Thank you Phil xx
Im Inn spiegelt sich hier die Renommier-Ansicht der Altstadt von Passau mit dem St. Stephans-Dom, der sich auf der Halbinsel zwischen dem Inn (im Vordergrund) und der Donau befindet.
After a long day of exploring the Petrified Forest National Park, we stopped briefly to enjoy the sunset at the famed Painted Desert Inn, a great example of Pueblo Revival style architecture. The inn is an historic complex at the edge Petrified Forest National Park, in Apache County, eastern Arizona. It is located off Interstate 40 and near the original alignment of historic U.S. Route 66, overlooking the Painted Desert.
The Freemasons Tavern (also known as the Freemasons Inn and the Freemasons Inn and Restaurant) is a 19th-century pub in the Brunswick Town area of Hove, part of the English city of Brighton and Hove.
Built in the 1850s in a Classical style similar to the surrounding buildings in the rapidly growing Brunswick Town area, it was given a "spectacular" renovation when a restaurant was added in the 1920s. Local architecture firm Denman & Sondesigned an ornate Art Deco interior and an elaborate, brightly coloured entrance adorned with Masonic symbols. both the exterior and the interior survive in excellent condition.
The tavern is a Grade II Listed building.
