Afternoon sunshine on the Ladybower Inn on the A57 close to Ladybower Reservoir in the Derbyshire Peak District. The wisteria in bloom adds colour but is in fact a "fake plant".
Kolumba

Alas there's no warm welcome here, no more friendly chat with the landlord, and the last pint was served long ago...

Fortunately we didn't stay at the Whale Inn in Depoe Bay. The day after I took this shot, we drove past again and saw a giant track hoe taking bites of it and loading the pieces into a truck.
Happy Window Wednesday!
Crumplehorn Inn and Mill located in Polperro, Cornwall dates from circa 17th century and is a grade II listed building.
During the Napoleonic Wars {1803 - 1815} the British Government substantially raised taxes on a range items to pay for the cost of the war. This led to an increase in smuggling along the Cornish coast and Polperro was no exception. To this day there are many stories and songs about Cornish fisherman who illegally brought tea, gin, brandy and tobacco into the country, mainly from Guernsey in the Channel Islands.
As Cornwall has a very rugged coastline and was remote from London, the Government found it very difficult to trace or apprehend the smugglers and as a result there was much money to be made.
One of the residents of Crumplehorn Inn, Zephaniah Job, was well known for managing the smuggling trade in Polperro and became an advisor, accountant and banker to many of the inhabitants of the village as well as some local gentry. He brought great wealth to many Polperro families albeit from dubious means!
Nestled between Loweswater and Crummock Water in the English Lake District, the Kirkstile Inn has been providing food and shelter for more than four hundred years. Looks like a lovely place to stay with great walks right out the door!
Thanks for stopping by -- I appreciate your of your kind comments. Hope everyone has a great week ahead!
