Ink & watercolor.....

When I sat down to paint, I thought I would try to copy another Van Gogh...even though I never ''copy'' but I do interpret...:) But after a few brush strokes, I decided to just 'take off on my own"...:) After all if I did copy him I might have to cut off my ear or something...:)

I picked up the paint brush and went right to it....no pre drawing! I love doing this! It helps me ''get loose'' and lose all the details I think I have to put in...but alas...in the end I could not resist the ink!!!

If you Google Van Gogh's Blue Iris's...you can see the painting....I can't seem to copy/paste it for you here.

Vincent van GoghPost-Impressionist Grand Master Vincent Van Gogh’s “Irises, Saint Remy, 1889,” depicts the garden of the hospital where he spent the last months of his life. Suffering from depression for most of his life, Van Gogh (1853 – 1890) believed he could remain sane by painting and continued to do so while in Saint Remy. This work, the first he created while he was a patient, was influenced by the strong outlines, unusual angles and unconventional coloring of Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Selling only one painting in his lifetime, Van Gogh’s “Irises, Saint-Remy” set a world record in 1987 when it sold for $49 million.

October is known as Inktober to a lot of sketchers worldwide. Started by Jake Parker in 2009, the idea is to draw one ink sketch each day during the month and to post it on social media - most notably on Twitter with the hashtag #Inktober or #Inktober 2018. Sounds easy? The basic idea is to stimulate your creative juices and to create positive drawing habits. Not everyone can do the full month, so you do what you can. This is one of my contributions.

My illustration is inspired by a sculpture at the Canadian History Museum known as 'Namaxsala : To travel in a boat together' by Mary Anne Barkhouse (below). Her sculpture derives from a story that her grandfather told her where he helped a wolf cross a treacherous stretch of water in a boat on the west coast of Canada in British Columbia. Namaxsala reflects on human relationships with the natural world. A short video on the making of the sculpture can be found at www.historymuseum.ca/maryannebarkhouse. The setting for the sculpture on the Ottawa River in front of the Parliament Buildings is magnificent. Viewed from inside the museum, it can look as though Namaxsala is right on the river ready to make its own passage.

5th meeting. Our group is growing, nine people met today to draw on location and then have lunch together. Some of us drew Villa Tenoya in Haría (Lanzarote). A very old house with 21 rooms and an interesting history whose owner, Paco, told us. He also said that "happiness must be kept but also sought out", great motto!

Quinto encuentro.
