The use of "sick" to mean excellent or impressive emerged in the early 1980s within the United States, specifically rooted in skateboarding and surfing subcultures.
The earliest recorded example of this usage is found in a 1983 university slang compilation from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, where it was used to describe a concert as "unbelievably good." Cultural Context: The term gained traction because these "extreme" sports involved physically challenging and death-defying manoeuvres. Skaters and surfers began using words that suggested intensity, danger, or insanity—such as "sick," "nuts," "insane," "ill," or "wicked"—as high praise for a particularly impressive trick.

This sunset occurred during a nice, relaxing evening in Venice back in mid November on my first night out to shoot in nearly a month as I dealt with Scotch's health and recovery from throat surgery. It was incredibly quiet and empty around the beach and outside of a few people (and dogs) wandering along the shore when I first arrived as the sky turned golden yellow and orange, I was basically alone while on the beach while I shot. Most of the time this is my preference, even if I have begun to enjoy including people or at least their silhouettes in my shots. Some days, it's nice to hear just the ocean and see nothing but the sea and sky in front of me.
The sky had started a yellowish orange and as dusk approached, the areas between the sun and the pier turned pink and crimson and remained like that for a good 10-15 minutes. The view was so impressive, I tried very hard to focus on panoramas so I could avoid cutting out anything. I kept trying to shoot between the pier and the sunset and while a few turned out nicely, most were far too distorted as I tried hard to figure out how to correct a curved view into a straight line. I hate seeing bend on a horizon and for most of my attempts, my angles were just a bit too close and view too wide. This particular shot was intended to be part of a panorama but I liked this frame the best of the group. This was the only panel to really show both the crimson to the left and the golden colors to the right.
It's been pretty cloudy and overcast the last week or so and most of my attempts to shoot included dark gray skies or a light rain. A few days I didn't have time to get to a west facing view have been impressive however, with several sunsets replicating--at least in hue--this sunset. When my camera fell last week, I was certain that there would be substantial damage and yet the only issue (knock on wood) was the bent 67-77mm step up ring I had on the lens. All of my filters including my circular polarizer are 77mm and it's hard to get reflections and results I want without it. A replacement arrives tomorrow so hopefully the rain will let up and I'll be able to go see a great sunset sooner than later.
