Replacement of the Capilano Bridge was announced in April 2009, and the construction contract was awarded to Neelco Construction of Surrey.

The old bridge was slid over and used as a detour while the new crossing was built.

The new bridge was opened to traffic May 20, 2011, and the old bridge will be removed and the area will be rehabilitated.
