CANAL INFO
The Leeds and Liverpool canal was built from 1772 to increase industrial transportation between West Yorkshire and the Merseyside ports. Limestone, textiles and coal were in critical demand between Yorkshire and Lancashire at this time where trains were still only beginning to happen. Committees in Bradford and Liverpool formed and for a while disputed over their different respective plans for the route Following appeasement, the route as proposed via engineers John Longbotham and James Brindley was built at a cost of nearly £260, 000 and a length of 109 miles. The first phase, from Bingley to Shipley was up and running by 1774. By this time, Brindley had passed, and Longbotham had taken over as chief engineer. The construction from the Liverpool end reached Wigan in 1781.
The canal's overall construction spanned five decades, delayed further by money and disputes and also the colonial war in the late 1700s. Trade from Yorkshire to Liverpool was already brisk by the time construction finished, including branches - significantly the ones to Bradford and Wigan. Although both steam and horse drawn railways were available by 1800, the canal continued to thrive for a century.
Horse drawn barges would last impressively until 1960 while industrial trade remaining until the 1980s, by which time the bulk of such work was being done, quite inevitably by trains and lorries.
Today, the Leeds and Liverpool canal stretches for 127 miles, crossing the Pennines between the two cities, with additional branches bringing people - and still business - to and from other towns in Yorkshire and Lancashire on its journey. 91 locks are included, notably the notorious 5 Locks at Bingley, which take an apparent 3-4 hours to negotiate.
The towpath is used heavily by both walkers and cyclists on its route, with the Leeds end being notably active especially during commuter hours. At the newly developed Granary Wharf, the canal basin area has been heavily redeveloped in recent years while the new southern entrance to Leeds station also providing additionally quick access to the canal route.

Downtown Brooklyn
Founded in 1883, the New York and New Jersey Telephone and Telegraph Company served the ever-increasing populations of Long Island, Staten Island and northern New Jersey.
The fast growth of the city and the company created the need for a large headquarters building for this local service provider of the Bell system.
This elaborate and elegantly designed Beaux- Arts style building served as a major statement of the company’s expansion in the area, providing offices and telephone switching in the heart of Brooklyn’s expanding business district.
The company installed and maintained telephone wires and provided telephone service to more than 16,000 subscribers in 1897 when this building was constructed. Designed by leading Brooklyn architect Rudolphe L. Daus, the building’s distinctive ornamentation establishes a strong presence on this busy street corner. Daus drew on his classical French training to create a dramatic structure, epitomized by the rounded corner accented by an elaborate cartouche and a deep, projecting cornice. These design features are balanced by oversized arches resting on engaged columns and broad rustication of the lower floors.
The New York and New Jersey Telephone Company Building occupies an almost square site at the corner of Willoughby and Lawrence Streets in downtown Brooklyn. Eight stories tall, it is faced with light tan brick, limestone and terra cotta and terminates in a broadly projecting copper cornice. The two street facades are almost identical, each having three bays, with an additional bay located at the rounded corner where the two sides join together. Most of the bays (except where there are building entrances) hold three, paired windows. The main entrance to the building is in the easternmost bay of the Willoughby Street façade, and the Lawrence Street façade has an altered service entrance on the ground floor of the central bay. All the windows have been changed to 1/1 double-hung aluminum sash. Stone cornices divide the building horizontally above the first, fourth and sixth stories.
There is an additional narrow service bay to the east of the building’s main entrance on Willoughby Street, slightly recessed from the main plane of the building. The façade treatment of this additional section is very plain, with unadorned single window openings and plain brick facing, except for a continuation of the stone cornices above the first, fourth and sixth stories. A plain, non-historic service door is located at the ground floor of this section.
The ground story is faced with rusticated stone which has been given a cement coating. On Lawrence Street, the central bay has a metal stoop leading to a pair of replacement metal doors surrounded by cement infill. The rest of the ground story windows are partially covered by deep fabric awnings. The central window of the corner bay has been replaced by a glass door, reached by cement stairs with modern metal railings. The flanking windows have fixed, single-pane sash. The double-height, main entrance to the building is located in the eastern bay on Willoughby Street. It consists of a large, rounded, deeply-set archway which is framed by a full entablature. Its cornice is engraved with the words, “Telephone Company.” The side piers, which support this cornice, are adorned with terra-cotta ornament in the form of early telephones with intertwined wires and ear pieces. Above each of the capitals of these piers is a spread-wing eagle perched on an embellished medallion. The rounded archway is fronted by moldings and a keystone with a head. Its reveal is coffered and it is supported by double columns with Corinthian capitals. Within the arch, the rectangular door opening is surrounded by a wide molding ornamented with emblems related to telephones, such as wires, early receivers and earpieces. A triangular pediment rises above the doorway, within the arch.
Stone cornices are located below the second and above the fourth stories, which are faced with brick laid to suggest rustication. Each bay has three paired windows with continuous stone sills, and lintels formed by flat brick arches. Above the fourth story, the wide stone cornice is punctuated by ornate terracotta medallions mounted between each bay. At the rounded corner bay, this cornice projects slightly and is carried on paired brackets. The fifth and sixth stories are linked by double-height, engaged columns set on stone bases. The center window of the fifth story is topped by a triangular pediment supported by smaller columns. Above the sixth story, another deep cornice rings the building, recessed slightly within -5 - each bay and projecting between them. Each bay of the seventh story holds a large rounded arch with moldings and an elaborate terra cotta keystone. Tripartite window are set within each arch. The rounded corner bay at this level is pierced by a large oculus window enhanced by ornate terra-cotta ornament including a head, volutes and foliage. The original sash has been replaced by a fixed single-pane sash. At the top story, each bay has three paired, rectangular windows set between short brick pilasters, with no openings in the corner bay. A deep, projecting copper cornice enhanced by brackets and moldings creates a strong finishing element for the façade.
There is a narrow service bay located to the east of the main section of the building on Willoughby Street. It is set back slightly from the main plane of the building and has a narrow entrance at the ground story. Although the cornices continue as on the rest of the façade, the bay is generally unornamented, with a single window opening on each floor.
On the northern elevation, the wall which overlooks the short building to the north is faced by plain, unfenestrated brick. The other elevations are not visible from the street.

Technology has had a meaningful impact on the renovation process, increasing the significance and strength of the planning stage. The availability of free online design tools has improved visualization of the changes, at a fraction of the cost of hiring a professional interior designer. The decision regarding changes is also influenced by the purpose of renovation. In case of a so-called "fix-and-flip" (repair and resell) objective, an ROI (return on investment) can result from changes to fix a structural issue or design flow yield or to use light and color to make rooms appear more spacious.
After a population increase due to the discovery of oil in 1908, local residents realized the need for permanent school facilities and formed the Goose Creek Independent School District in 1919, encompassing the cities of Goose Creek, Pelly, and Baytown and the Wooster community. Prominent Houston architect Harry D. Payne designed a new school, which opened in fall 1928. The Art Deco-style building with Classical elements is concrete-framed with a stucco veneer on a concrete foundation. Notable features include glazed terra cotta roof tiles, brick trimmed niches with urns, and classical finials. Robert E. Lee High School, named due to the Confederate general's popularity in the area, served as a senior high school for the entire district. Sited between Goose Creek-Baytown Highway (now Market Street) and the Dayton-Goose Creek Railroad (now Union Pacific), the school was centrally located in the tri-cities, allowing it to unite them and become the heart of the area.
As a state purpose of the school was to become the center of all community activities, various organizations and churches were allowed to use its facilities, and the auditorium became a popular venue for civic events. Another purpose was adult education; from 1934 to 1951, Lee Junior College held classes at night on the high school campus. Disaster struck on April 29, 1987, when a fire, later determined to be arson, engulfed the main building. Alumni and citizens insisted on restoration of the building to its original appearance. From the beginning, Robert E. Lee High School students have won numerous honors in both academics and athletics. Over the years, the school has expanded and modernized to consistently meet the highest standards and remain a first-class high school. (2011) (Marker No. 16880)
Increasing numbers of children, who had been separated from their parents during fighting in the countryside, arrived in Goma, eastern DRC in 2008. Christian Aid partner CBCA took them in, providing them with food, care and shelter. Since there was little expectation that many of their parents would be found, work began on an orphanage, to give them a permanent home.

One of the fundamental responsibilities of higher education is to provide open and equal opportunities for students to learn, succeed, and positively contribute to their local, national, and global societies. Great strides are being made in increasing educational access, retention completion, and success, yet there is still work to be done particularly for students from disadvantaged or marginalized groups. Unprecedented shifts in migration patterns are causing demographic changes around the world. Additionally, governments, societies, and higher education institutions are increasingly recognizing the need and responsibility to create legal and institutional frameworks for providing more and better opportunities for people from historically marginalized groups to gain access and achieve success at the university level.
From South Africa’s “Historically Disadvantaged Institutions,” to Brazil’s “Law of Social Quotas,” and a long tradition of “Minority Serving Institutions” in the United States, just to name a few, higher education institutions committed to providing educational opportunities for local communities marginalized along ethnic, racial, religious or other lines can be found on every continent. What’s more, in light of shifting demographics and the growing focus on educational opportunity and access, increasing numbers of colleges and universities will be serving students from marginalized groups. For too long, institutions serving students at the margins have operated in a vacuum, failing to collaborate across institutional types and across nations. This Salzburg session will bring together leaders from institutions serving marginalized populations with policy makers and researchers to develop a platform for finding solutions to these institutions’ common challenges and capitalizing on their strengths.
This program is being designed and implemented in partnership with the recently launched Center for Minority Serving Institutions at the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education and with Educational Testing Service. From 2010 to 2012, Salzburg Global and Educational Testing Service collaborated on a series of sessions on “Optimizing Talent: Closing Educational and Social Mobility Gaps Worldwide.”
MSU AgBioResearch entomologists and landscape ecologist Doug Landis and other researchers affiliated with the Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) have found that agricultural landscapes of the Midwest have increasing amounts of cropland and decreasing amounts of non-crop habitat. This "landscape simplification" is associated with increased pest abundance and increased insecticide use.
Each year, landscape simplification results in application of insecticides to an extra 3.5 million acres, with direct costs between $34 million and $104 million.

This is a seismograph station record from the Norris Museum in Yellowstone, Wyoming. The increase in noise at the bottom of the graph (click on the image to zoom in) is a major eruption of Steamboat Geyser. The eruption started at 3:53 PM on 30 October 2019.
Steamboat is the world's tallest geyser. Its eruptions are normally unpredictable - it can go years or even decades without erupting. Steamboat entered an exciting active phase in spring 2018. From fall to the end of 2018, Steamboat continued to erupt about once every 5 to 9 days. 2018 set the record for the most active year ever, with 32 eruptions. 2019 broke that record - this is the 42nd eruption of Steamboat Geyser this year. In January 2019, intervals (= eruption start to eruption start) were about 9 to 11.5 days. In February 2019, intervals were about 7 to 9.5 days. March 2019 intervals were about 6 to 8 days. In April 2019, intervals were 14 days and 17 days. Longer intervals between Steamboat eruptions are known to occur during "disturbances" at Norris Geyser Basin (this also happened in summer 2018). In May 2019, after the disturbance ended, intervals were 7 days, 5 days, 5.5 days, 6.8 days, 7 days, and 5 days. In June 2019, intervals were 5 days, 5.5 days, 3 days, 3.4 days, 4.5 days, and 5.5 days. ~Three day intervals are remarkably short for Steamboat Geyser. In July 2019, intervals were 5 days, 6.75 days, 7.5 days, 5.8, and ~6.25 days. In August 2019, intervals were 13.6 days, 7.6 days, and 6.9 days. The two week long interval in August was due to another Norris Basin disturbance. In September 2019, intervals were ~6.7 days, 8.8 days, ~6.1 days, ~7.3 days, and ~6.3 days. In October 2019, intervals were ~6.3 days, 8.3 days, 6.4 days, and 8.1 days.
