Honor Flights to Washington, D.C.’s war memorials increased significantly after Labor Day, as D.C.'s fabled heat (theoretically) transitions to a more favorable fall climate. Groups from Arizona, Florida, Idaho and Chicago were some of the first to arrive in the nation’s capitol Sept. 7 after the federal holiday.

Honor Flight Chicago celebrated its 74th flight since its inception, with 108 participants including 18 World War II and 90 Korean War Vets, in addition to the required support staff of more than 125 dedicated volunteers.

Their day began much earlier than the 6:45 a.m. flight from Midway Airport-Chicago, to Dulles, Va. They boarded buses and drove to the Iwo Jima Memorial where they were met by police motorcycle escort which guided them first to the Air Force Memorial for a performance by the Air Force Drill Team, before crossing the Potomac to the National World War II Memorial.

The group toured the memorial until a color guard honored the Veterans with pomp and circumstance. Center of the group, Arthur Kapinus, 89, a WWII Navy Veteran, held the flag-case filled with veterans portraits dear to members of the Honor Flight Chicago family.

Art was accompanied to D.C. by his brother Bernie, an 81-year-old Army Vet who served in Korea during the mid-50’s. All told, eight Kapinus brothers have served in the military, mostly in the Army and Navy, since World War II. Their brother Joe, whose picture joined five others in the case, served with General Patton and was killed in Luxembourg in January 1945, at age 29.

John Ptak, president of Honor Flight Chicago is not a Veteran, but he has accompanied these flights since 2011, this his 20th trip.

“This is my grandfather, he was in the army in WWII. He passed about 20 years ago, so he didn’t get his Honor Flight,” you can hear emotion in his voice, as he gingerly touches the photo strung round his neck. “I didn’t get a chance to take my grandfather, so I take other people’s grandfathers”.

Some braved the humidity and heat in the 90’s and ventured off to the Korean War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial before heading back to Dulles Airport. There was time scheduled to visit the relatively new Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum before boarding their flight back home with an ETA after 8pm.

More than 100 additional Honor Flights from around the nation are planned through December with the last for the year currently scheduled for Pearl Harbor Day.

The public servants strike for a 12% increase led to the shooting of former Umjindi executive mayor's wife by a trigger-happy policeman at the Riverside Mall, where the workers had been gathering. Birmingham (Listeni/ˈbɜrmɪŋəm/, locally /ˈbɜrmɪŋɡəm/) is a city and metropolitan borough in the West Midlands of England. It is the most populous British city outside London with 1,085,400 residents (2012 estimate),[2] and its population increase of 88,400 residents between 2001 and 2011 was greater than that of any other British local authority.[3] The city lies within the West Midlands Built-up Area, the third most populous built-up area in the United Kingdom with a population of 2,440,986 (2011 census).[4] Birmingham's metropolitan area is the United Kingdom's second most populous with 3,683,000 residents.[5]

A medium-sized market town during the medieval period, Birmingham grew to international prominence in the 18th century at the heart of the Midlands Enlightenment and subsequent Industrial Revolution, which saw the town at the forefront of worldwide developments in science, technology and economic organisation, producing a series of innovations that laid many of the foundations of modern industrial society.[6] By 1791 it was being hailed as "the first manufacturing town in the world".[7] Birmingham's distinctive economic profile, with thousands of small workshops practising a wide variety of specialised and highly skilled trades, encouraged exceptional levels of creativity and innovation and provided a diverse and resilient economic base for industrial prosperity that was to last into the final quarter of the 20th century.[8] Its resulting high level of social mobility also fostered a culture of broad-based political radicalism, that under leaders from Thomas Attwood to Joseph Chamberlain was to give it a political influence unparalleled in Britain outside London and a pivotal role in the development of British democracy.[9]

Today Birmingham is a major international commercial centre, ranked as a beta− world city by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network;[10] and an important transport, retail, events and conference hub. Its metropolitan economy is the second largest in the United Kingdom with a GDP of $114.3bn (2012 est., PPP),[11] and its six universities make it the largest centre of higher education and academic research in the country outside London.[12] Birmingham's major cultural institutions – including the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Birmingham Royal Ballet, the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, the Library of Birmingham and the Barber Institute of Fine Arts – enjoy international reputations,[13] and the city has vibrant and influential grassroots art, music, literary and culinary scenes.[14]

People from Birmingham are called 'Brummies', a term derived from the city's nickname of 'Brum'. This originates from the city's dialect name, Brummagem,[15] which may in turn have been derived from one of the city's earlier names, 'Bromwicham'.[16] There is a distinctive Brummie accent and dialect.

The quick learning curve / increased fun aspect of this is really cool. I think I am getting the hang of it a bit more. (Also, I think this is the first time I have voluntarily included an “s”. If I’m going to practice I might as well become friends with my nemeses. Here’s to an “x” next time. :-p )

Typecooker recipe (Class level):

width: condensed

weight: thin

construction: Roman + capitals

stroke endings: a serif

ascender: longer than normal

descender: longer than normal

contrast type: expansion (pointed nib)

contrast amount: high contrast

stems: straight

intended application: newsprint

From the combination of high contrast, thin weight, and newsprint I figured this was best used for display sizes. I tried to make it robust enough and a bit spiky/sparkly for added visual interest. The y is too wide I think. Oh, maybe the p too.

The weather for this year's race was perfect for racing. There was a hard frost overnight but this brought clear bright skies and crisp air. There was no real wind to speak of.

Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. If the first three years of this year are anything to go on then this race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim.

I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?

As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:

►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera

►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set

►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone

►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!

You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

Don't like your photograph here?

That's OK! We understand!

If, for any reason, you are not happy or comfortable with your picture appearing here in this photoset on Flickr then please email us at petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com and we will remove it as soon as possible. We give careful consideration to each photograph before uploading.

Thai police cadets embarked on the first-ever training on ending violence against women and girls to increase their knowledge on the nature, extent, and seriousness on crimes perpetrated against women and show commitment as change agent towards ending the global pandemic.

Following the advocacy to end violence against women supported by Her Royal Highness Princess Bajrakitiyabha, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, the Office of the Attorney General and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) have joined hands with the Police Cadet Academy in organizing the Training Workshop: New Generation to End Violence against Women for the 285 third-year Police Cadet students from today and will call for 80 volunteering students to continue with the training for another two days. The training curriculum includes role of police in justice system, police as change agent, and attitude and behavioral change. The workshop is part of Thailand’s commitment to contribute to the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon UNiTE Campaign to End Violence against Women.

Experiences worldwide have shown that recruitment of women police officers and resourcing of gender desks must be part of a broader strategy to train and incentivize all police to adequately respond to women’s needs. Women being present in justice services can help to enhance accountability and create a system that is responsible to women.

In Thailand, a National Survey in 2009 found that 365,230 ever-married women faced physical violence from intimate partners, especially young women aged 15-19 years. But the number of ever-partnered women facing violence against women remains unknown. Under-reporting of crimes against women is a serious problem in all regions.

With the recent increase in the water level at Summer Leys the great white egret(s) have had to investigate new feeding areas. Having seen a great white egret fishing close to one of the hides the day before (unfortunately whilst I was in a different hide) when I saw it fly to the same place again the following day that I knew I had to move to that hide. I waited patiently as the egret moved closer and closer along the reedbed towards the hide hoping that no one would come into the hide and disturb the bird. Thankfully nothing disturbed it and I was able to take lots of photos.

Exercise improves cardiac health and controls several of the risk factors associated with Heart Conditions. However, Exercises also increase stress on the cardiovascular system and will precipitate or worsen cardiac symptoms. The essence is to strike the correct balance.

For those with healthy hearts and no symptoms, exercise must always be encouraged. For those with manifest cardiac unwellness and weak hearts, a supervised program and an understanding of exercise-related stress are emphasized.

Heart Exercises are often broadly speaking divided into 3 types – Aerobic exercises, Resistance Exercises, and Stretching Exercises.

Aerobics

Aerobics is additionally referred to as cardio exercise since the one major impact it has is on heart rate. The intensity is outlined as mild, moderate, and severe depending on the heart rate achieved throughout the exercise. As a rough calculation, the heart rate of an individual is 220 minus the age in years. The mild, moderate, and severe kind is once the heart rate reaches below 60 %, 60-80 %, and over 80 % severally throughout an exercise.

The heart's oxygen demand will increase with the rise in heart rate and is the principle utilized in the stress test once cardiac changes are assessed throughout such stress. A supervised exercise program is based on constant principles wherever you may be suggested on what level of aerobic exercise is safe. One could begin exercises at intervals some weeks of a cardiac event under a supervised program.

How aerobics will profit your Heart

Despite age, weight, or physical skills, aerobic exercise will have a positive impact on your heart and overall health. It doesn't only manages weight, and lowers blood pressure and cholesterol but also improves blood circulation. All of those factors reduce the chance of heart illness. In addition, will increase stamina, improves mood, and facilitate us to be active despite our age. A few samples of aerobic workouts include running or jogging, climbing stairs (at work or home), swimming, cycling, and taking part in sports like soccer, badminton, tennis, basketball, etc.

Resistance Exercises

Weight coaching, also referred to as Resistance Exercises or Muscle-strengthening Exercises, is one example wherever a bunch of muscles is moved against resistance. Resistance exercises have an additional impact on blood pressure than heart rate. It will increase the strength, size, power additionally, and endurance of the muscle. However, once resistance exercises involve heavy weights and breath holding, there may be an incredible rise in BP, and people with uncontrolled BP should avoid it. While at the same time, resistance exercise of lesser intensity lowers the BP, some believe even over aerobic exercises, in the long-term. greater repetitions of weights with lesser loads are suggested.

How Resistance Exercises will profit

Resistance Exercises strengthen your muscles. This will help you perform routine activities seamlessly and also defend your body from injuries. Additionally, strong muscles also enhance your metabolic rate, which means additional calories are going to be burnt even while at rest. A few samples of resistance exercises include lifting free weights (dumbbells, barbells, or hand weights), body-resistance workouts (pull-ups, squats, chin-ups, and pushups), and utilizing resistance bands or weight machines.

Stretching Exercises

Stretching Exercises, also known as flexibility workouts, doesn't contribute to your heart’s health, however, it will benefit your musculoskeletal health, that in turn, will help with joint pain, muscle cramping together with other musculoskeletal problems. Stretching Exercises must always be done to tone the system and build exercise safer and easier. It's crucial in allowing you to keep up your aerobic and resistance training workouts. The sudden stretch of muscles will cause pain and injury which might be avoided by some minutes of warm-up and cooling off, usually with stretch exercises. One should get Counselling on stretching of various muscles and muscle clusters from trained personnel for greater results.

In addition, yoga also has several health benefits, like lesser resting heart rate, higher respiratory function, improved blood circulation, and raised lung capacity. There are several studies that also show that yoga will facilitate lower blood pressure, which is extremely vital to decrease your risk for stroke, heart attack, and other health ailments. Yoga and meditation also can scale back stress, one of the most important risk factors for cardiovascular disease.

5 Signs of Heart issues You Mustn’t Neglect while physical exercise

Seek medical attention if you experience the following when you're exercising:

Chest Discomfort

Intense pain, fullness or squeeze within the center of the chest, or uncomfortable pressure will indicate several heart disorders. If you experience these, stop exercising and ask for an expert recommendation.

Light-headedness or giddiness

Experiencing fatigue is common while exercising, particularly if you lead an inactive lifestyle mostly. however, light-headedness and giddiness are causes for concern. Don’t ignore these.

Abnormal heart rhythm

Skipping a heartbeat or palpitations isn't a standard occurrence in most healthy people. Make sure you are careful about these symptoms.

Shortness of Breath

While shortness of breath to some extent is normal, if it persists for long or is accompanied by discomfort, then it’s a warning call. Consult your doctor in such a scenario.

Unusual Sweating

Sweating is once more normal, but cold sweats or sweating not to mention nausea or discomfort isn’t.

Conclusion

Regular exercise, a stable heart-healthy diet, and regular comprehensive healthy heart checks can facilitate keeping a tab and strengthening your heart. You should also understand the type, and how much exercise is good for you. Consult an expert Apollo cardiologist at Ask Apollo and visit Apollo ProHealth’s Heart day Page for more info..

Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.

History

The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.

System

Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.

The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.

The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.

On Friday 12 July 48 Year 9 students left Enfield Grammar School at 5.00am on the History trip to the First World War Battlefields near Ypres. Our numbers increased to 49 at the Eurotunnel: Remaine Newland finally arrived!! His alarm hadn't worked - Remaine's mum put her driving skills to the test and successfully pursued the coach to Folkestone.

The boys visited the Trench of Death, one of the longest preserved sections of trench in Belgium. This gave them an opportunity to see the strategic significance of the river Ijzer and the importance of defending it from the Germans. From there, the group went on to the museum at Zonnebeke for a tour and lunch.

The afternoon's visits included a tour of Polygon Woods Cemetery and Hill 60. The two cemeteries allowed the boys to compare the layout of a concentration cemetery with a battlefield cemetery. They paid their respects to the Australian soldiers buried at Polygon Woods. At Hill 60, the boys learnt about the different battles that were fought around Ypres and were told how the mine crater we visited was created. Many were shocked to learn that the explosion at Hill 60 was so loud it had been heard in London.

Despite the highly dramatic, but non-serious, head injury sustained by a member of the group, everyone managed to enjoy the visit to the Menin Gate and the town of Ypres. When looking at the Menin Gate, the boys not only saw names from Middlesex and Essex but India, Australia and Jamaica - further emphasising the fact it was a world war.

A final highlight for many was the visit to the chocolate shop where they stocked up on presents for their parents and snacks for themselves.

Travels with Bill

USA trip, April through June 1963.

Close friend, William J. Armstrong passed away in March of 2013 at the age of 80. I came in possession of his many travel slides which he had taken through the years, and felt it would be an honor to share these many fine photos for all to see. One of Bill’s many interests was in transportation, and included almost all forms, from the streetcar, to the Jet plane. Early on, he could be found with a simple box camera taking photos of 3rd Avenue Railway streetcars in his native Bronx and nearby southern Westchester County. As he matured, the circle of travel increased to all of the New York metropolitan area, and then to other cities. Bill loved to travel, to see and experience not only his native New York, but the country as well. His interests went far beyond just transportation, but included history, geography, geology, and photography.

In April of 1963, a thirty year old Bill Armstrong set out on a two and one half month journey to see the country. He had just purchased a new 1963 Ford Falcon four door sedan, teal green in color and equipped with a rare 4 speed manual transmission mated to the base six cylinder engine. The car would take him across the plains of Texas, through the searing heat of Death Valley, along the Pacific Coast, and to Crater Lake where snow was still packed higher than his car. He drove north to Vancouver, Canada and then south along the eastern front of the Rockies. He and his trusty Falcon would visit many of the fabled National Parks such as the Grand Canyon, Crater Lake, and Yosemite. Cities such as Houston, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Kansas City, St. Louis, Minneapolis, Detroit, Cincinnati, and Cleveland. Most of the driving was done on the old network of US highways, as the Interstate highway system was largely to be built.

Viewing these slides we are seeing our nation as it was fifty years ago. JF Kennedy was President, but would only live a few months longer. Our nation was engaged in a war in Viet Nam that would go on throughout the decade. The civil rights movement was growing as the decade progressed, and then Martin Luther King would be killed. But our nation was still optimistic for the future, and in six years we would land on the moon. Ours was a different nation then, and looking at these photos we see how styles have changed, and just look at all the “old” cars.

Bill loved to share his photos, and presented many evening slide shows during the years. I’m sure he would be pleased, and humbled, that his photos have been preserved and restored as much as possible. Time has not been kind to his color slides. After fifty years the colors have either faded or have changed tint. Bill shot many of his slides using Kodak Ektachrome, which faded very rapidly after developing. Many of those slides could only be saved into a black and white format. Fortunately during the 1963 trip he began to change over to Kodachrome slide film which held up far better. Although Kodachrome turned somewhat purple and darker over the years, a quick session with Photoshop managed to restore much of the color and sharpness. I have included several of the original Ektachrome slides as “before” images for comparison purposes.

This trip served to take Bill from a basic photographer to a highly competent scenic photographer. One can see his mastery of the camera improve as the trip progresses. Note how composition improves, and the use of foreground elements becomes evident during the trip. These photos were all taken with a relatively basic 35mm rangefinder camera with manual focus, lens and shutter adjustment. Bill never used a light meter, instead using the simple instructions provided on the inside of the film box, and let’s not forget the very slow speed of those old color slide films.

So enjoy the trip through Bill’s USA….I’m sure he is smiling.

Yesterday, Jools and I were lucky to have tickets to a wonderful tour of the WW2 underground shelter complex at Clapham South Underground Station. Although it is/was separate from the station itself.

We massed outside the tube station, then after checking and showing our tickets, we were taken to the fortified entrance for the 180 steps taking us down to the shelter level.

------------------------------------------------------

As congestion on the Northern Line increased in the '30s, a plan was developed to build a second pair of tunnels in parallel with the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line that would act as an express route through London. These plans were shelved at the outset of the Second World War, but as the platforms of the Underground became increasingly used by the general public overnight as air raid shelters (despite being initially discouraged), work began in 1940 on building deep level shelters which were envisaged to eventually become the platform tunnels for the express route.

Ten shelters were originally planned - five to the north of the Thames and five to the south. All of these were to eventually form part of the Northern Line express route apart from Chancery Lane and St. Pauls, which were associated with the Central Line. The stations on the Northern Line that were equipped with extra tunneling are: Belsize Park, Camden Town, Goodge Steet, Stockwell, Clapham North, Clapham Common, Clapham South. Work on St. Pauls was abandoned in 1941 for fear of damaging the cathedral's foundations and also work ceased on a shelter at Oval soon after, due to extensive flooding. It is unknown whether Oval would have been included in the express route.

Above ground, each shelter's shafts were protected by specially constructed 'pill box' buildings to prevent any bombs that directly hit the location from going underground. Each pill box housed lift machinery and provided the cover for spiral staircases down to the shelter's tunnels.

Each shelter consisted of two parallel tunnels that were 16ft 6in (approx. 4.9m) in diameter and were 1400ft (approx. 427m) in length. Two pairs of shafts were sunk for each shelter, with the pairs being sited a distance from each other in case a bomb struck, blocking a shaft. At each location, one shaft was for the spiral staircase and lift, the other a narrower ventilation shaft.

The two tunnels were interconnected at various places along their length. A floor was constructed at the horizontal diameter level of the tunnel, providing two decks of accommodation. Ventilation, medical, and catering facilities were provided and electricity was obtained from two sources in case bombing caused one to fail - the local authority and the London Underground system, which had its own power station at Lotts Road.

The spiral staircases were constructed in the form of a double helix. One staircase would lead to the upper deck, the other to the lower. This was to allow shelterers to be able to quickly access their destination deck with minimum confusion. On the whole, the upper and lower decks were run independently, though access between decks was provided in the mid-point and at both end of the tunnels. The lift would have access to both upper and lower decks, but was not meant to be used by shelterers.

Toilet facilities were constructed near the lift shafts, with the sewage being periodically hydraulically pumped up a rising main to a sewer close to surface level. There was storage capacity of 5 days for sewage should the hydraulic mechanism fail for some reason. Water was supplied from the local water supply, but should this fail, each shaft was equipped with a 3000 gallon tank of water near the surface.

Each shelter was originally designed to house up to 12,000 people but by the time they were built, the number of bunks had been dropped to a more comfortable 8,000. Bunks were arranged along the walls in various configurations, to maximise use of space.

Ventilation is vital in such a confined environment and a lot of thought was given to this. Air entered the shelter through the entrances and flowed down the spiral staircases, along the connecting tunnels into the shelter area. Stale air was then sucked out of the shelter through metal pipes in the roof (top deck) and under the floor (bottom deck). A fan pumped the air up a specially constructed ventilation shaft, out into a 30ft high tower so that it exhausted well away from the fresh air entering at ground level. When the fans were run at maximum power, the air in the shelter would be completely changed 15 times an hour.

The air was filtered in case of gas attack. All doors were gas seals when closed, and should there be an attack, the entrance doorways would be shut, with the air passing through grilles in the roof of the pill box (clearly visible on the Goodge Street picture below) and through gas filtration equipment.

It was hoped that when their wartime use had come to an end, tunneling would re-start to allow the already constructed tunnel sections to be interconnected, providing the express Northern Line route. For this reason, most shelters were constructed with ease of access to the existing Northern Line in mind. All of these shelters were constructed close to and in parallel with the existing platform tunnels of nearby stations on the Northern Line, and have interconnection tunnels with the existing platforms. In some cases, these interconnections have since been blocked.

Most of the shelters took about a year and a half to complete, but amazingly, the government got cold feet about using them as public shelters as they were incredibly expensive to maintain. Several of the shelters were re-purposed. Goodge Street became Genereal Eisenhower's headquarters, some were converted for government use while others were used as army barracks, to house troops in transit.

It took the advent of the flying bombs (V1 and later V2) to convince the government that they should be used as they were originally intended and some were converted back to be used as public shelters.

After the Second World War came to an end, plans to create the express route stayed on the shelf, and were then ultimately dropped as money for the project wasn't available. Most of the shelters found post war use initially as accommodation for the army in transit and most are today in use as storage facilities.

As they were now being used for other purposes, all the deep level shelters were isolated from their associated active Underground stations, in most cases the interconnection tunnels being bricked up.

Concerned that the considerable price increase of a 911 over the 356 would cost the company sales and narrow the appeal of the brand, a decision was made by executives to introduce a new entry-level model. In 1964, with both the 356 and the 911 in production, Porsche engineers constructed a 912 prototype. Built on the 911's chassis and sharing its bodyshell, Porsche was able to offer the 912 for much less than a base-model 911 by using the four-cylinder engine from the 356 rather than the 911's "flat" six-cylinder powerplant and by reducing the number of standard features.

After production of the 356 model ceased in April 1965, in May 1965 Porsche began production and delivery of the 912. The proven reliability of the 356's engine combined with the 911 bodywork and powertrain yielded improved weight distribution, handling, and range. A lower price made the 912 a very attractive buy to both new and old customers, and it substantially outsold the 911 during the first few years of production: Porsche produced slightly more than 30,000 units during its five-year production run. 912s were also used as police (polizei) cars in Europe, including Targas (Porsche's patented variation of a cabriolet with lift-off folding top, rollbar, and an openable plastic rear window).

In April 1967, the Porsche factory's Christophorus magazine noted: "On 21 December, 1966, Porsche celebrated a particularly proud anniversary. The 100,000th Porsche, a 912 Targa outfitted for the police, was delivered."

After updating the 911 line-up to include both a more powerful 911S and a less expensive 911T, Porsche executives began to feel that the 912 had become redundant, that the 911 platform was sufficiently diverse and that pricing had largely come into line with market expectations.

Owing to this and the desire to introduce a new model, the 912 was discontinued and superseded as Porsche's entry-level model by the 914 in 1970; a vehicle which Porsche had thought would be less expensive for them to manufacture and sell than the 912. In practice, a deterioration in relationships between Porsche and Volkswagen - who had designed and planned to manufacture the 914 - severely curtailed the intended cost reduction, and the 914 was discontinued in 1976.

After a six year absence, the 912 was re-introduced to North America in 1976 as the 912E (internal factory designation 923) to occupy the entry-level position left vacant by the discontinuation of the 914, while the new 924 – the 914's official replacement – was being finalized and put into production. The new 912 featured the "G-Series" 911 bodywork and was powered by a 2.0 L version of the Volkswagen air cooled engine, previously used in late-model versions of the 914/4. 2,099 were manufactured in total, and were not officially sold outside the United States.

Police targeted by paint bombs infront of Parliament.

Over 20,000 students marched through London in protest on the day Parliament was due to vote on the increase in student University tuition fees. When the march reached Trafalgar Square, many protesters, finding Whitehall blocked by police, moved towards Parliament square via The Mall and Horse Guards. Lines of police behind crush barriers blocked access to Parliament.

Protesters brushed aside a weak line of police and then started to try and unsuccessfully break through the lines of police in front of Parliament. Parliament Green was occupied with the temporary fencing surrounding it being broken down, and used to attack police, or defend protesters against police. Fighting between police and protesters continued during the afternoon particularly, including mounted police charges, on Broad Sanctuary.

At about 5pm, the kettle on the north side of Whitehall was broken by protesters, with further lines of police, both mounted and on foot having to move the length of Whitehall to re-establish the kettle.

With the news, in the early evening, that the vote had been passed, there was an immediate increase in anger amongst the protesters. The Treasury in particular was attacked, with riot police being stationed inside the building.

Lines of riot police using round and long shields eventually cleared Parliament Square. Over 1000 students were held in a kettle on Westminster Bridge until nearly midnight.

There were reports, many unsubstantiated as yet, of police attacking peaceful protesters trying to leave the kettle. Student Alfie Meadows was hit on the head by a truncheon, and had to have an emergency, life saving, operation to treat an intracranial bleed.

Smaller groups of protesters roamed streets nearby with shops, including Topshop in Oxford Street being attacked as well as a car containing Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.

Gangs and black block protesters from several mainland European countries attended the protest. The violence on the protesters side, even after the news of the vote result, was perpetrated by a minority. The majority of students were sitting around waiting to exit the kettle, trying to keep warm, or dancing to music.

Chief Constable Stephen Watson formally opened our new Tactical Aid Unit (TAU) base in Leigh on Friday 3 February 2023.

Part of TAU has been relocated to provide a better public service in the north and west of the force area, with officers stationed there to allow increased visibility as well as improving the response to crime and anti-social behaviour in the area.

Mr. Watson attended the launch with senior GMP and TAU officers, and MPs James Grundy and Yvonne Fovargue.

Mr. Watson said: “Being able to respond to incidents and emergencies as effectively as we can is at the very heart of GMP.

“Having the TAU based in the north of the force area means we can better serve our communities and keep people safe.

“Operations and critical incidents are the bread and butter of the TAU. They are the team with the specialist skills and knowledge that can support our people and keep them safe.

“This move also shows the commitment we have to ensuring GMP is a force that is attractive to officers from other areas who may be looking for a move.

"It is my absolute pleasure to open this base in Leigh which will allow us more effectively to fight, prevent, and reduce crime.”

TAU carries out high-profile disruption and enforcement, targeting serious, organised, and high-impact crime. The team have specialist skills and are deployed wherever they are needed most, including dealing with public order, tackling organised crime, managing large events, and providing specialist search capabilities.

Chief Superintendent Emily Higham, GMP's Wigan District Commander, said: "TAU are specialist officers who can support Wigan and Leigh with search warrants, trouble hotspots and public disorder.

"They will also be visible in the area and their geographical location which means they will be able to respond more quickly to incidents and support our local officers. I am delighted they have moved into the borough."

You should call 101, the national non-emergency number, to report crime and other concerns that do not require an emergency response.

Find out more about the Honor Flight Network, how you can become involved, donate, and meet Veterans as they tour D.C. here: www.honorflight.org/

The majority of students were sitting around waiting to exit the kettle, trying to keep warm, or dancing to music.

High amount of MSG in the diet increases the risk of obesity and metabolic syndrome.

Police officer is injured as police try and control demonstrators at the head of the march.

The violence on the protesters side, even after the news of the vote result, was perpetrated by a small minority. The majority of students were sitting around waiting to exit the kettle, trying to keep warm, or dancing to music.

STUDENTS DayX3 NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION (Part 2)

Protest and march against University tuition fee increases, 09th Dec. 2010

Over 20,000 students from around the country converged on Central London today to march for a third time to protest against the coalition government's plans to massively increase University tuition fees, which will ultimately mean that far fewer students from poorer backgrounds will be able to even consider a University education because of the massive debts incurred which will follow them for the rest of their working lives.

I joined the days proceedings in the afternoon as they were assembling in Trafalgar Square. To throw the police off-guard they suddenly took off, en mass, through Admiralty Arch in a bid to get to Parliament Square, which had been forbidden. That evening the House of Commons was voting on the Education Funding Bill, and the students were determined to make sure that Parliament heard their protests.

The day started in a good mood, but by the time they reached Parliament pockets of disorder had started breaking out - Flares were lit and thrown, crush barriers and construction site fencing ripped up to be used as weapons against the massed ranks of riot police and later on the mounted police. I had to leave by around 3pm, and by the time I got home and turned on the BBC news all hell had broken loose outside Parliament. Protesters were pelting the police with lumps of masonry, metal poles and scaffolding. They lit large fires, broke down the doors to The Treasury and the new Ministry of Justice buildings, smashing many windows, daubing graffiti everywhere and generally smashing up the joint. Many people were arrested and many people hurt, some badly.

As the police gradually started releasing the by-now contained protesters in small numbers, several small groups headed up to Oxford Street, where they smashed the windows of the flagship TopShop store (owned by Sir Phillip Green who is being attacked for shovelling billions of pounds of what should be UK taxable income into tax haven accounts owned by his wife as part of a legal tax dodge), and in Regent Street they engulfed the Bentley containing Prince Charles and his horse-faced wife Camilla who were in the process of swanning orf the the Royal Variety Performance! The protesters started kicking the vehicle. They broke the windows and threw a tin of white paint over the car. One was not amused!

Needless to say the Bill was passed in Parliament tonight, and the students have vowed to continue their campaign of demonstration and civil disobedience...
