Hungun Beton is the largest producer of cement bricks in Mongolia and with the help of EBRD plans to further modernise the factory and increase the quality of their bricks. Not only to better compete with other Mongolian producers, but also with imports from neighbouring China.
Hungun Beton is one of hundreds of companies in Mongolia, and many thousands around the EBRD region, that develop new strategies and improve the quality of their products in cooperation with the help of business advice through the EBRD’s Small Business Support programme. Funded in Mongolia by the EU, and by multilateral and bilateral donors and the EBRD itself across the region, their know-how is transforming businesses from many countries. Mongolia’s rapid growth makes this success even more obvious.
Small and medium-sized business is key to EBRD activities anywhere, but in Mongolia, the EBRD has a unique programme to develop small and medium-sized businesses, funded by the European Union, that works both with individual enterprises and with the organisations in the country that support the SME sector, like the SME Department in the Ministry of Labour, the Chamber of Commerce and the Banking and Finance Academy.
The EU has contributed €3.8 million for the programme for the five years from 2012 to 2016. Funding has also been received from the EBRD’s Shareholder Special Fund and the Early Transition Countries (ETC) fund, the government of Japan and private companies.
Since 2001, SBS has provided over 350 small businesses in Mongolia with know-how and expertise. As of November 2013, the programme already supported more than 60 businesses, with a focus on wool and cashmere, mining services, tourism and construction. There is also an emphasis on regional development and gender – since 2012 over 40 women-owned and managed SMEs have become clients.
One of these women-managed SMEs is Hungun Beton, the concrete blocks manufacturer, which developed an investment business plan and received support with management and human resources.

My #Art and #LECTIODIVINA Reflection for (5/1/22) Gospel reading… from John 21:1-19
“…When it was already dawn, Jesus was standing on the shore; …HE said to them, ‘Children, have you caught anything to eat?’”
“…Simon, son of John, do you LOVE me?” Peter was distressed that Jesus had said to him a third time, “Do you LOVE me?”
“Lord, YOU know everything; YOU know that I LOVE YOU...”
WHAT IS THE LORD PERSONALLY SAYING TO ME?
Are we catching people for the Lord and HIS Kingdom? Do we LOVE HIM more than we Love the people in our Life? Are we following HIM in the best way we possibly can?
WHAT DOES THE LORD PERSONALLY WANT ME TO DO?
- Follow HIM…
- Share all that the Lord has done in my life with my family and friends, even if they don’t want to hear it.
- Show my LOVE to God in Thanksgiving of all that HE has done for me.
PRAYER
“Lord, you know everything; shine through me today.”

Mandalay is the second-largest city and the last royal capital of Burma. Located 716 km north of Yangon on the east bank of the Irrawaddy River, the city has a population of 1,225,553 (2014 census).
Mandalay is the economic hub of Upper Burma and considered the centre of Burmese culture. A continuing influx of Chinese immigrants, mostly from Yunnan, in the past twenty years, has reshaped the city's ethnic makeup and increased commerce with China. Despite Naypyidaw's recent rise, Mandalay remains Upper Burma's main commercial, educational and health center.
ETYMOLOGY
The city gets its name from the nearby Mandalay Hill. The name is probably a derivative of a Pali word, although the exact word of origin remains unclear. The root word has been speculated to be mandala, referring to circular plains or Mandara, a mountain from Hindu mythology.
When it was founded in 1857, the royal city was officially named Yadanabon (ရတနာပုံ, [jədənàbòʊɴ]), a loan of the Pali name Ratanapūra (ရတနပူရ) "City of Gems."[9][10] It was also called Lay Kyun Aung Myei (လေးကျွန်းအောင်မြေ, [lé dʑʊ́ɴ àʊɴ mjè], "Victorious Land over the Four Islands") and Mandalay Palace (မြနန်းစံကျော်, [mja̰ náɴ sàɴ tɕɔ̀], "Famed Royal Emerald Palace").
HISTORY
EARLY HISTORY
Like most former (and present) capitals of Burma, Mandalay was founded on the wishes of the ruler of the day. On 13 February 1857, King Mindon founded a new royal capital at the foot of Mandalay Hill, ostensibly to fulfill a prophecy on the founding of a metropolis of Buddhism in that exact place on the occasion of the 2,400th jubilee of Buddhism. The new capital city site was 66 km2 in area, surrounded by four rivers. The plan called for a 144-square block grid patterned citadel, anchored by a 16 square block royal palace compound at the center by Mandalay Hill. The 413-hectare citadel was surrounded by four 2,032 m long walls and a moat 64 m wide, 4.6 m deep. At intervals of 169 m along the wall, were turrets with gold-tipped spires for watchmen. The walls had three gates on each side, and five bridges to cross the moat. In addition, the king also commissioned the Kuthodaw Pagoda, the Pahtan-haw Shwe Thein upasampada hall, the Thudamma"Good Dharma" zayats (IPA: [zəjaʔ]) or public houses for preaching Buddhism and a library for the Pāli Canon.
In June 1857, the former royal palace of Amarapura was dismantled and moved by elephants to the new location at the foot of Mandalay Hill, although construction of the palace compound was officially completed only two years later, on Monday, 23 May 1859.
For the next 26 years, Mandalay was to be the last royal capital of the Konbaung Dynasty, the last independent Burmese kingdom before its final annexation by the British Empire. Mandalay ceased to be the capital on 28 November 1885 when the conquering British sent Thibaw Min and his queen Supayalat into exile, ending the Third Anglo-Burmese War.
COLONOAL MANDALAY (1885–1948)
While Mandalay would continue to be the chief city of Upper Burma during the British colonial rule, the commercial and political importance had irreversibly shifted to Yangon. The British view on the development of Mandalay (and Burma) was mainly with commercial intentions. While rail transport reached Mandalay in 1889, less than four years after the annexation, the first college in Mandalay, Mandalay College, was not established until 40 years later, in 1925. The British looted the palace, with some of the treasures still on display in the Victoria and Albert Museum, also renaming the palace compound Fort Dufferin and used it to billet troops.
Throughout the colonial years, Mandalay was the centre of Burmese culture and Buddhist learning, and as the last royal capital, was regarded by the Burmese as a primary symbol of sovereignty and identity. Between the two World Wars, the city was Upper Burma's focal point in a series of nationwide protests against the British rule. The British rule brought in many immigrants from India to the city. In 1904–05, a plague caused about one-third of the population to flee the city.
During World War II, Mandalay suffered the most devastating air raids of the war. On April 3, 1942, during the Japanese conquest of Burma, the Imperial Japanese Army Air Service carried out an extensive assault on the city. As the city was defenseless and its firefighting were weak that had been lost in the earlier bombing and that they met no opposition from the British RAF as all its aircraft had by now been withdrawn to India, three-fifths of the houses were destroyed and 2,000 civilians were killed. Many again fled the city when the city was under Japanese occupation from May 1942 to March 1945. The palace citadel, turned into a supply depot by the Japanese, was burnt to the ground by Allied bombing; only the royal mint and the watch tower survived. (A faithful replica of the palace was rebuilt in the 1990s.)
CONTEMPORARY MANDALAY (1948–present)
After the country gained independence from Britain in 1948, Mandalay continued to be the main cultural, educational and economic hub of Upper Burma. Until the early 1990s, most students from Upper Burma went to Mandalay for university education. Until 1991, Mandalay University, the University of Medicine, Mandalay and the Defence Services Academy were the only three universities in Upper Burma. Only a few other cities had "Degree Colleges" affiliated with Mandalay University that offered a limited number of subjects. Today, the city attracts a fraction of students as the military government requires students to attend their local universities in order to reduce concentration of students in one place.
In November 1959, Mandalay celebrated its centennial with a festival at the foot of Mandalay Hill. Special commemorative stamps were issued.
During Ne Win's isolationist rule (1962–1988), the city's infrastructure deteriorated. By the early 1980s, the second largest city of Burma resembled a town with low-rise buildings and dusty streets filled mostly with bicycles. In the 1980s, the city was hit by two major fires. In May 1981, a fire razed more than 6,000 houses and public buildings, leaving more than 36,000 homeless. On 24 March 1984, another fire destroyed 2,700 buildings and made 23,000 people homeless.
Fires continue to plague the city. A major fire destroyed Mandalay's second largest market, Yadanabon Market, in February 2008, and another major fire in February 2009 destroyed 320 homes and left over 1600 people homeless.
The 1980s fires augured a significant change in the city's physical character and ethnic makeup. Huge swaths of land left vacant by the fires were later purchased, mostly by the ethnic Chinese, many of whom were recent immigrants from Yunnan. The Chinese influx accelerated after the current State Peace and Development Council came to power in 1988. With the Burmese government turning a blind eye, many Chinese immigrants from Yunnan (and also from Sichuan) poured into Upper Burma in the 1990s and many openly ended up in Mandalay. In the 1990s alone, about 250,000 to 300,000 Yunnanese are estimated to have migrated to Mandalay. Today, ethnic Chinese people are believed to make up about 30%–40% of the city's population, and are a major factor in the city's doubling of population from about 500,000 in 1980 to one million in 2008. Chinese festivals are now firmly embedded in the city's cultural calendar. It is a common Burmese complaint that Mandalay is becoming little more than a satellite of China and that the romance of old Mandalay is long gone
The Chinese are largely responsible for the economic revitalization of the city centre, now rebuilt with apartment blocks, hotels and shopping centres, and returning the city to its role as the trading hub connecting Lower Burma, Upper Burma, China and India. The Chinese dominance in the city center has pushed out the rest to the suburbs. The urban sprawl now encompasses Amarapura, the very city King Mindon left some 150 years ago. Mandalay celebrated its 150th birthday on 15 May 2009, at precisely 4:31:36 am.
Despite the rise of Naypyidaw, the country's capital since 2006, Mandalay remains Upper Burma's main commercial, educational and health center.
AROUND THE CITY
Atumashi Monastery: The "Atumashi kyaung", which literally means "inimitable vihara", is also one of the well known sights. The original structure was destroyed by a fire in 1890 though the masonry plinth survived. It was indeed an inimitable one in its heyday. The reconstruction project was started by the government on 2 May 1995 and completed in June 1996.
Buddha's Replica Tooth Relic Pagoda: One of the Buddha's Sacred Replica Tooth Relics was enshrined in the Mandalay Swedaw Pagoda on Maha Dhammayanthi Hill in Amarapura Township. The pagoda was built with cash donations contributed by the peoples of Burma and Buddhist donors from around the world under the supervision of the State Peace and Development Council. The authorities and donors hoisted Buddha's Replica Tooth Relic Pagoda Mandalay's Shwe Htidaw (sacred golden umbrella), Hngetmyatnadaw (sacred bird perch vane) and Seinhpudaw (sacred diamond bud) on 13 December 1996.
Kuthodaw Pagoda (The World's Biggest Book): Built by King Mindon in 1857, this pagoda modeled on the Shwezigon Pagoda at Nyaung-U, is surrounded by 729 upright stone slabs on which are inscribed the entire Tipiṭaka as edited and approved by the Fifth Buddhist council. It is popularly known as "World's largest book" for its stone scriptures.
Kyauktawgyi Pagoda: Near the southern approach to Mandalay Hill stands the Kyauktawgyi Buddha image built by King Mindon in 1853–78. The Image was carved out of a huge single block of marble. Statues of 80 arahants are assembled around the Image, twenty on each side. The carving was completed in 1865.
Mahamuni Buddha Temple: The image of Gautama Buddha at Mahamuni Buddha Temple is said to have been cast in the life-time of the Gautama Buddha and that the Buddha embraced it seven times, thereby bringing it to life. Consequently, devout Buddhists hold it to be alive and refer to it as the Mahamuni Sacred Living Image. Revered as the holiest pagoda in Mandalay, It was built by King Bodawpaya in 1784. The image in a sitting posture is 3.8 m high. As the image was brought from Rakhine State, it was also called the Great Rakhine Buddha. The early morning ritual of washing the Face of Buddha Image draws a large crowd of devotees everyday. The Great Image is also considered as the greatest in Burma next to Shwedagon Pagoda. A visit to Mandalay is incomplete without a visit to Mahamuni Pagoda.
Mandalay Hill: The hill has for long been a holy mount. Legend has it that the Buddha, on his visit, had prophesied that a great city would be founded at its foot. Mandalay Hill, 230 metres in elevation, commands a magnificent view of the city and surrounding countryside. The construction of a motor road to reach the hill-top has already been finished.
Mandalay Palace: The whole magnificent palace complex was destroyed by a fire during World War II. However, the finely built palace walls, the city gates with their crowning wooden pavilions and the surrounding moat still represent an impressive scene of the Mandalay Palace, "Mya-nan-san-kyaw Shwenandaw", which has been rebuilt using forced labor. A model of the Mandalay Palace, Nanmyint-saung and Mandalay Cultural Museum are located inside the Palace grounds.
Shwenandaw Monastery: Famous for its intricate wood carvings, this monastery is a fragile reminder of the old Mandalay Palace. Actually, it was a part of the old palace later moved to its current site by King Thibaw in 1880.
The Chinese Temple of Mandalay: The Chinese Temple, well known for its old artistic architectures and cultural artifacts, reflects Mandalay's old history.
Yadanabon Zoological Gardens: A small zoo between the Mandalay Palace and Mandalay Hill. It has over 300 species and is notably the only zoo to have Burmese roofed turtles.

This was such an insane time vortex, I can't even begin to tell you how many hours I spent on this...Shadow of the Colossus is this crazy, simple PS2 game that totally obsesses me. You can just ride around on a horse for hours in this imaginary world. I find it oddly soothing and fascinating. When we were playing this in Madison, Johnny found out all this stuff online that you could very easily miss, so we started hunting around for fruit (hangs in trees, gives you a longer health bar) and these stupid lizards. The ones with the white tales increase your stamina. For real. My ultimate obsession became finding this secret garden somewhere on the giant temple which is the center of the game. And today I did it.
The end.
In an attempt to increase tourism, Belfast City Council designated a number of cultural quarters at the beginning of the new millennium, and it was then that the Cathedral Quarter was born, The area is named after St. Anne's Cathedral. The church was built between the years of 1899 and 1904 and enjoys a central setting on Donegall Street, beside Ulster University.
This week was the first time that I got the opportunity to see the inside of St. Anne’s Cathedral and to be honest I think that it will be the last time.
I am not religious so in theory it should not worry or bother me that the place had the feeling of a commercial enterprise rather than that of a ‘house of god’. Upon entering the building the interior struck me as being styled in the manner on a modern art gallery rather than a cathedral but in a way it could be described as attractive or even beautiful but it totally lacks atmosphere.
Before I visited Belfast I checked some tourist guides and they all indicated that entry to the cathedral was free but that donations were appreciated. When I went into the Cathedral much of of the centre was cordoned-off as some work was in progress.
There was a merchandising section not far from the entrance and this was manned by a lady who was having a conversation with two people who were either guides or church officials, they were dressed in blue. I was nearly at the altar when I was approached by the lady who explained that there was a nominal fee which needed to be paid before I left.
While I would describe the place as attractive and bright I did not find it in anyway interesting but this could because I am not at all comfortable with a church that features military artefacts as a major attraction.
I took a few photographs and then went to pay the ’nominal fee’ and I was more than surprised when I was informed that the cost of entry was £5.00.

Honor Flights to Washington, D.C.’s war memorials increased significantly after Labor Day, as D.C.'s fabled heat (theoretically) transitions to a more favorable fall climate. Groups from Arizona, Florida, Idaho and Chicago were some of the first to arrive in the nation’s capitol Sept. 7 after the federal holiday.
Honor Flight Chicago celebrated its 74th flight since its inception, with 108 participants including 18 World War II and 90 Korean War Vets, in addition to the required support staff of more than 125 dedicated volunteers.
Their day began much earlier than the 6:45 a.m. flight from Midway Airport-Chicago, to Dulles, Va. They boarded buses and drove to the Iwo Jima Memorial where they were met by police motorcycle escort which guided them first to the Air Force Memorial for a performance by the Air Force Drill Team, before crossing the Potomac to the National World War II Memorial.
The group toured the memorial until a color guard honored the Veterans with pomp and circumstance. Center of the group, Arthur Kapinus, 89, a WWII Navy Veteran, held the flag-case filled with veterans portraits dear to members of the Honor Flight Chicago family.
Art was accompanied to D.C. by his brother Bernie, an 81-year-old Army Vet who served in Korea during the mid-50’s. All told, eight Kapinus brothers have served in the military, mostly in the Army and Navy, since World War II. Their brother Joe, whose picture joined five others in the case, served with General Patton and was killed in Luxembourg in January 1945, at age 29.
John Ptak, president of Honor Flight Chicago is not a Veteran, but he has accompanied these flights since 2011, this his 20th trip.
“This is my grandfather, he was in the army in WWII. He passed about 20 years ago, so he didn’t get his Honor Flight,” you can hear emotion in his voice, as he gingerly touches the photo strung round his neck. “I didn’t get a chance to take my grandfather, so I take other people’s grandfathers”.
Some braved the humidity and heat in the 90’s and ventured off to the Korean War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial and the Lincoln Memorial before heading back to Dulles Airport. There was time scheduled to visit the relatively new Udvar Hazy Air and Space Museum before boarding their flight back home with an ETA after 8pm.
More than 100 additional Honor Flights from around the nation are planned through December with the last for the year currently scheduled for Pearl Harbor Day.
Find out more about the Honor Flight Network, how you can become involved, donate, and meet Veterans as they tour D.C. here: www.honorflight.org/

*By 1918, due to the increase in Kimba’s population, the need for a public hall became a priority.
A timber framed, corrugated iron building with pitched roof was purchased for £100 from Cowell. This building was dismantled and transported to Kimba by settlers using horse-teams.
The hall was used as the School, Town Hall, and Picture Theatre with films shown every month. It was used for Dances and Balls, Church, as a Polling Booth and for travelling salesmen to display and sell their wares.
*A foundation stone was laid in 1929, in memory of those who served in the Great War 1914–1918 and the new Institute was officially opened in the same year.
*In 1958 a new front was added with a Library and Council Office. [Ref: Story Board]
*A plaque to the memory of those from the Kimba District who made the supreme sacrifice in World War One 1914–1918 and World War Two 1939–1945 was unveiled on the day the additions were officially opened by Sir Lyell McEwin on 23 February 1958.
*Kimba Memorial Institute
The first step in the most progressive move that has taken place in Kimba, occurred on Saturday, when the foundation stone of the new Soldiers Memorial Institute was laid by Miss Mary Haskett, daughter of Mr and Mrs I S Haskett, and the first white child born in the district.
One of the largest crowds seen in Kimba assembled to witness this important ceremony.
Mr F R Ferry, President of the Kimba Institute, and the Building Committee, presided, and seated on the platform with him were Mesdames O M Eatts, G J Chenoweth, Reiss (wife of contractor), and Messrs J Tippett, Andrew Ramsey, O E Carlaw, F J Newman, Reiss (contractor) and F I Kestel (architect).
Mr Ferry gave a very interesting resume of details leading up to the occasion, and then presented Miss Haskett with a silver trowel, suitably inscribed, and asked her to perform the ceremony of laying the stone.
Miss Haskett, in a neat little speech declared the stone well and truly laid.
Mr Andrew Ramsey, in moving a vote of thanks to Miss Haskett, said that we all admitted and admired the bravery of such pioneer families as the Hasketts.
The chairman then appealed for donations for the hall to be placed on the stone, and Mrs O M Eatts, on behalf of the Kimba Ladies' Social Club, led the way with their cheque for £1,116 10/0, followed by others of smaller denomination.
After the ceremony, a football match was held on the recreation ground between the Kelly and Kimba teams, resulting in a win for Kelly, who have not been defeated for the season.
A cycle race for boys was run during the intervals of the football match, and resulted in a win for J Brewster. Mr Chenoweth also conducted a putting and mashie competition for golf enthusiasts, the whole proceeds going towards the institute funds. [Ref: Eyre’s Peninsula Tribune 11-7-1929]
*Kimba Institute - Official Opening
Kimba will be en fete on Saturday December 7th, when the long-looked for event of the opening of the large new hall will take place.
For many years the public have suffered the inconvenience of a cramped wood and iron structure which could not nearly cope with the crowd at public functions. As a form of Soldiers’ Memorial it was decided to build an institute large enough to satisfy the requirements of a rapidly growing district, and despite the lean years that the district has recently experienced, a very handsome structure is the result. In conjunction with the opening of the hall on December 7th, the local branch of the RSA will hold their annual sports on the show grounds, the total proceeds of the day will go towards the hall funds. The hall will be opened by Lieutenant-Colonel W F J McCann DSO, MC, at 10am.
Special arrangements are being made to provide a sparkling entertainment for the evening which will be followed by a dance. [Ref: Eyre’s Peninsula Tribune 28-11-1929]
This is a photograph from the 3rd annual running of the Trim AC 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run which was held in Trim, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday 5th February 2017 at 12:00. The race attracted over 1,200 participants which shows a 100% increase on last year's participation. The event shows growth year on year mirroring the growing popularity of the race. The race started on the Trim/Athboy road on the town's ring road and proceded to take an anti-clockwise loop out towards the village of Dunderry and townland of Kilbride before returning back to the Trim Industrial Estate for the finish. The route is held on quiet country roads with some hills at 3, 6, 8 mile segments.

The weather for this year's race was perfect for racing. There was a hard frost overnight but this brought clear bright skies and crisp air. There was no real wind to speak of.
Waterstops were provided at the 4.5 and 7 mile marks on the course. All access roads were well stewarded. The event was sponsored by Bewleys 1840 and many local business establishments. Credit must go to the Trim AC team for their flawless organisation. If the first three years of this year are anything to go on then this race will continue to grow. For runners around the North Leinster area this 10 mile race serves as a perfect training progress stepping stone to the Bohermeen Half Marathon which will take place in March 2016 and is located only 15 minutes drive from Trim.

Many people offer payment for our photographs. As stated above we do not charge for these photographs. We take these photographs as our contribution to the running community in Ireland. If you feel that the photograph(s) you request are good enough that you would consider paying for their purchase from other photographic providers or in other circumstances we would suggest that you can provide a donation to any of the great charities in Ireland who do work for Cancer Care or Cancer Research in Ireland.
Let's get a bit technical: We use Creative Commons Licensing for these photographs
We use the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License for all our photographs here in this photograph set. What does this mean in reality?
The explaination is very simple.
Attribution- anyone using our photographs gives us an appropriate credit for it. This ensures that people aren't taking our photographs and passing them off as their own. This usually just mean putting a link to our photographs somewhere on your website, blog, or Facebook where other people can see it.
ShareAlike – anyone can use these photographs, and make changes if they like, or incorporate them into a bigger project, but they must make those changes available back to the community under the same terms.
Above all what Creative Commons aims to do is to encourage creative sharing. See some examples of Creative Commons photographs on Flickr: www.flickr.com/creativecommons/
I ran in the race - but my photograph doesn't appear here in your Flickr set! What gives?
As mentioned above we take these photographs as a hobby and as a voluntary contribution to the running community in Ireland. Very often we have actually ran in the same race and then switched to photographer mode after we finished the race. Consequently, we feel that we have no obligations to capture a photograph of every participant in the race. However, we do try our very best to capture as many participants as possible. But this is sometimes not possible for a variety of reasons:
►You were hidden behind another participant as you passed our camera
►Weather or lighting conditions meant that we had some photographs with blurry content which we did not upload to our Flickr set
►There were too many people - some races attract thousands of participants and as amateur photographs we cannot hope to capture photographs of everyone
►We simply missed you - sorry about that - we did our best!
You can email us petermooney78 AT gmail DOT com to enquire if we have a photograph of you which didn't make the final Flickr selection for the race. But we cannot promise that there will be photograph there. As alternatives we advise you to contact the race organisers to enquire if there were (1) other photographs taking photographs at the race event or if (2) there were professional commercial sports photographers taking photographs which might have some photographs of you available for purchase. You might find some links for further information above.

I want to tell people about these great photographs!
Great! Thank you! The best link to spread the word around is probably http://www.flickr.com/peterm7/sets
So I'm sitting here, on this beautiful Saturday, fiddling with some new creations, when this arrived for me! Thanks so much Banzi. I'll see what I can do to return the favor. The Garand and helmet are so well painted. And the Deringer is awesome. That increases my "proto" collection to 2 items ;D
January 6, 2014 - Albany: Governor Cuomo announces details of a more than $2 billion tax relief proposal designed to increase economic opportunity and attract and grow businesses across the State. Thanks to responsible fiscal management in state government, New York has gone from a $10 billion deficit to an expected $2 billion surplus. Today’s proposals are made possible by this success, and are the next major step in New York’s continued transformation to a more affordable state businesses and families.
The quick learning curve / increased fun aspect of this is really cool. I think I am getting the hang of it a bit more. (Also, I think this is the first time I have voluntarily included an “s”. If I’m going to practice I might as well become friends with my nemeses. Here’s to an “x” next time. :-p )
Typecooker recipe (Class level):
width: condensed
weight: thin
construction: Roman + capitals
stroke endings: a serif
ascender: longer than normal
descender: longer than normal
contrast type: expansion (pointed nib)
contrast amount: high contrast
stems: straight
intended application: newsprint
From the combination of high contrast, thin weight, and newsprint I figured this was best used for display sizes. I tried to make it robust enough and a bit spiky/sparkly for added visual interest. The y is too wide I think. Oh, maybe the p too.

Hoenheim Nord Terminus Strasbourg, France
Architect: Zaha Hadid
BACKGROUND - The city of Strasbourg has been developing a new tram-line service to combat increasing congestion and pollution in the city centre. It encourages people to leave their cars outside the city in specially designed car parks, and then take a tram to the more inner parts of the city. The first part of this initiative was the development of Line ‘A’ that ran east to west across Strasbourg. Zaha Hadid has been invited, as part of the new artist’s interventions, to design the tram-station and a car park for 700 cars at the northern apex of the line.
CONCEPT - The overall concept towards the planning of the car park and the station is one of overlapping fields and lines that knit together to form a constantly shifting whole. Those ‘fields’ are the patterns of movement engendered by cars, trams, bicycles and pedestrians. Each has a trajectory and a trace, as well as a static fixture. It is as though the transition between transport types (car to tram, train to tram) is rendered as the material and spatial transitions of the station, the landscaping and the context.
MATERIALISED VECTORS - The Station contains a basic program of waiting space, bicycle storage, toilets and shop. This sense of three dimensional vectors is enhanced in the treatment of space: the play of lines continues as light lines in the floor, or furniture pieces or strip-lights in the ceiling. Viewed in plan, all the ‘lines’ coalesce to create a synchronous whole. The idea is to create an energetic and attractive space that is clearly defined in terms of function and circulation, which is made possible through three-dimensional graphics of light and openings.
MAGNETIC FIELDS - The car park is divided into two parts to cater for 700 cars. The notion of the cars as being ephemeral and constantly changing elements on site is manifest as a ‘magnetic field’ of white lines on the black tarmac. These delineate each parking space and start off aligned north/south at the lowest part of the site, then gently rotate according to the curvature of the site boundaries. Each space has a vertical light post. In contrast with the lines on the ground, an area of darker concrete, almost an imaginary ‘shadow’, cuts gently through the car park, linking the field of the station to the one of the car park. Overall, the ‘field’ of the light posts maintains a constant datum height that combines with the gradient of the floor slope. Again, the intention is to reciprocate between static and dynamic elements at all scales.

The 2nd annual Meath Spring Half Marathon (sponsored by Generali PanEurope) was organised and held at Bohermeen AC, Ardbraccan, Navan, Co. Meath, Ireland on Sunday March 3rd 2013 at 12:00. A 5KM race was also held on the day. This year a very large crowd of over 1,000 athletes turned out to compete on the day. The race has already increased in numbers since last year. Overall, this was a fantastic event and brilliantly organised by one of Ireland's oldest and most famous athletic clubs. The race is very well positioned in the running calendar for those who are preparing for a Spring Marathon.
The weather was perfect for 5KM and Half Marathon running with many personal bests and goals achieved for many people in both races.
This is a selection of photographs of the 1st lap pass of the finish and then the finish of half marathon. There are some 5KM photographs. Unfortunately we only had one camera on course today.

Balalan or Platanissos (Greek: Πλατανισσός) is a village in the Famagusta District of Cyprus, located on the Karpas Peninsula. It is under the de facto control of Northern Cyprus.
Since the Ottoman period the village has been almost exclusively inhabited by Turkish Cypriots, with the exception of a handful of Greek Cypriots recorded in some censuses until 1931. The village's population showed a steady increase through the 19th and early 20th centuries. 74 adult males were recorded in the Ottoman census of 1831, and the full population of the village peaked in 1946 at 445. A decline followed with villagers either migrating to cities or abroad due to the conflict that took hold of Cyprus from the 1950s onwards.
From the Bloody Christmas events of 1964 until 1974, the village was part of a Turkish Cypriot enclave remaining under the effective control of the Turkish Resistance Organisation. It was administered from the regional centre of Galateia and was home to some Turkish Cypriots who had fled the neighbouring villages due to the fighting. During the conflict in 1974, as Turkish forces landed near Kyrenia, the village came under attack by the Greek Cypriot National Guard, who sought to take control of the enclaves. By the evening of 21 July, the regional command in Galateia reported that Balalan was about to fall. It reportedly fell on the evening of 22 July, with the villagers seeking refuge in Galateia.
The decline of the village continued after the conflict in 1974 as well, with the youth leaving the village for job opportunities.
Historically, a defining feature of the village was the high number of lawyers and judges that came from there. The most notable of these was Mehmet Zekâ Bey, who headed the Supreme Court of Cyprus during the last years of the British rule, and ended up being elected as a judge for the European Court of Human Rights in 1961. His renown was so outsize compared to his village that at this point Balalan became known as "Horgon du Zekâ Bey", meaning "the village of Zekâ Bey" in common parlance.
The current mosque building was built in 1904 on the site of a much older Ottoman-era mosque. The marble inscription of the older mosque is still attached at the entrance, indicating a possible construction date of 1641 for the former building. In 1904, the villagers demanded funds from the Evkaf Administration to build a new mosque, as the older one was falling apart. When no funds were received, they raised money to build the mosque, enlisting a Greek Cypriot mason called Hacı Yorgi. This was then insufficient to complete the roofing of the mosque, and further funds were requested from the Evkaf Administration in 1907, to no response. Funding was later located, there were records as late as 1910 that indicate requests for help to complete the roofing. There were further repairs of the mosque conducted in 1954 and 1974.
It displays a typical Cypriot mosque layout with a rectangular plan, but is notable in that its entrance is from the east, whereas this is normally located in the north in Cyprus. This entrance door is located within a round arch. Four sharp arches carry the roof, and among them are bays, the presence of which indicate some inspiration from Orthodox churches. The minaret on the northeastern side is a later addition, having only been built in 1997-1998.
A traditional primary school (sıbyan mektebi) had been attached to the mosque in the early 20th century.
Northern Cyprus, officially the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC), is a de facto state that comprises the northeastern portion of the island of Cyprus. It is recognised only by Turkey, and its territory is considered by all other states to be part of the Republic of Cyprus.
Northern Cyprus extends from the tip of the Karpass Peninsula in the northeast to Morphou Bay, Cape Kormakitis and its westernmost point, the Kokkina exclave in the west. Its southernmost point is the village of Louroujina. A buffer zone under the control of the United Nations stretches between Northern Cyprus and the rest of the island and divides Nicosia, the island's largest city and capital of both sides.
A coup d'état in 1974, performed as part of an attempt to annex the island to Greece, prompted the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. This resulted in the eviction of much of the north's Greek Cypriot population, the flight of Turkish Cypriots from the south, and the partitioning of the island, leading to a unilateral declaration of independence by the north in 1983. Due to its lack of recognition, Northern Cyprus is heavily dependent on Turkey for economic, political and military support.
Attempts to reach a solution to the Cyprus dispute have been unsuccessful. The Turkish Army maintains a large force in Northern Cyprus with the support and approval of the TRNC government, while the Republic of Cyprus, the European Union as a whole, and the international community regard it as an occupation force. This military presence has been denounced in several United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Northern Cyprus is a semi-presidential, democratic republic with a cultural heritage incorporating various influences and an economy that is dominated by the services sector. The economy has seen growth through the 2000s and 2010s, with the GNP per capita more than tripling in the 2000s, but is held back by an international embargo due to the official closure of the ports in Northern Cyprus by the Republic of Cyprus. The official language is Turkish, with a distinct local dialect being spoken. The vast majority of the population consists of Sunni Muslims, while religious attitudes are mostly moderate and secular. Northern Cyprus is an observer state of ECO and OIC under the name "Turkish Cypriot State", PACE under the name "Turkish Cypriot Community", and Organization of Turkic States with its own name.
Several distinct periods of Cypriot intercommunal violence involving the two main ethnic communities, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, marked mid-20th century Cyprus. These included the Cyprus Emergency of 1955–59 during British rule, the post-independence Cyprus crisis of 1963–64, and the Cyprus crisis of 1967. Hostilities culminated in the 1974 de facto division of the island along the Green Line following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus. The region has been relatively peaceful since then, but the Cyprus dispute has continued, with various attempts to solve it diplomatically having been generally unsuccessful.
Cyprus, an island lying in the eastern Mediterranean, hosted a population of Greeks and Turks (four-fifths and one-fifth, respectively), who lived under British rule in the late nineteenth-century and the first half of the twentieth-century. Christian Orthodox Church of Cyprus played a prominent political role among the Greek Cypriot community, a privilege that it acquired during the Ottoman Empire with the employment of the millet system, which gave the archbishop an unofficial ethnarch status.
The repeated rejections by the British of Greek Cypriot demands for enosis, union with Greece, led to armed resistance, organised by the National Organization of Cypriot Struggle, or EOKA. EOKA, led by the Greek-Cypriot commander George Grivas, systematically targeted British colonial authorities. One of the effects of EOKA's campaign was to alter the Turkish position from demanding full reincorporation into Turkey to a demand for taksim (partition). EOKA's mission and activities caused a "Cretan syndrome" (see Turkish Resistance Organisation) within the Turkish Cypriot community, as its members feared that they would be forced to leave the island in such a case as had been the case with Cretan Turks. As such, they preferred the continuation of British colonial rule and then taksim, the division of the island. Due to the Turkish Cypriots' support for the British, EOKA's leader, Georgios Grivas, declared them to be enemies. The fact that the Turks were a minority was, according to Nihat Erim, to be addressed by the transfer of thousands of Turks from mainland Turkey so that Greek Cypriots would cease to be the majority. When Erim visited Cyprus as the Turkish representative, he was advised by Field Marshal Sir John Harding, the then Governor of Cyprus, that Turkey should send educated Turks to settle in Cyprus.
Turkey actively promoted the idea that on the island of Cyprus two distinctive communities existed, and sidestepped its former claim that "the people of Cyprus were all Turkish subjects". In doing so, Turkey's aim to have self-determination of two to-be equal communities in effect led to de jure partition of the island.[citation needed] This could be justified to the international community against the will of the majority Greek population of the island. Dr. Fazil Küçük in 1954 had already proposed Cyprus be divided in two at the 35° parallel.
Lindley Dan, from Notre Dame University, spotted the roots of intercommunal violence to different visions among the two communities of Cyprus (enosis for Greek Cypriots, taksim for Turkish Cypriots). Also, Lindlay wrote that "the merging of church, schools/education, and politics in divisive and nationalistic ways" had played a crucial role in creation of havoc in Cyprus' history. Attalides Michael also pointed to the opposing nationalisms as the cause of the Cyprus problem.
By the mid-1950's, the "Cyprus is Turkish" party, movement, and slogan gained force in both Cyprus and Turkey. In a 1954 editorial, Turkish Cypriot leader Dr. Fazil Kuchuk expressed the sentiment that the Turkish youth had grown up with the idea that "as soon as Great Britain leaves the island, it will be taken over by the Turks", and that "Turkey cannot tolerate otherwise". This perspective contributed to the willingness of Turkish Cypriots to align themselves with the British, who started recruiting Turkish Cypriots into the police force that patrolled Cyprus to fight EOKA, a Greek Cypriot nationalist organisation that sought to rid the island of British rule.
EOKA targeted colonial authorities, including police, but Georgios Grivas, the leader of EOKA, did not initially wish to open up a new front by fighting Turkish Cypriots and reassured them that EOKA would not harm their people. In 1956, some Turkish Cypriot policemen were killed by EOKA members and this provoked some intercommunal violence in the spring and summer, but these attacks on policemen were not motivated by the fact that they were Turkish Cypriots.
However, in January 1957, Grivas changed his policy as his forces in the mountains became increasingly pressured by the British Crown forces. In order to divert the attention of the Crown forces, EOKA members started to target Turkish Cypriot policemen intentionally in the towns, so that Turkish Cypriots would riot against the Greek Cypriots and the security forces would have to be diverted to the towns to restore order. The killing of a Turkish Cypriot policeman on 19 January, when a power station was bombed, and the injury of three others, provoked three days of intercommunal violence in Nicosia. The two communities targeted each other in reprisals, at least one Greek Cypriot was killed and the British Army was deployed in the streets. Greek Cypriot stores were burned and their neighbourhoods attacked. Following the events, the Greek Cypriot leadership spread the propaganda that the riots had merely been an act of Turkish Cypriot aggression. Such events created chaos and drove the communities apart both in Cyprus and in Turkey.
On 22 October 1957 Sir Hugh Mackintosh Foot replaced Sir John Harding as the British Governor of Cyprus. Foot suggested five to seven years of self-government before any final decision. His plan rejected both enosis and taksim. The Turkish Cypriot response to this plan was a series of anti-British demonstrations in Nicosia on 27 and 28 January 1958 rejecting the proposed plan because the plan did not include partition. The British then withdrew the plan.
In 1957, Black Gang, a Turkish Cypriot pro-taksim paramilitary organisation, was formed to patrol a Turkish Cypriot enclave, the Tahtakale district of Nicosia, against activities of EOKA. The organisation later attempted to grow into a national scale, but failed to gain public support.
By 1958, signs of dissatisfaction with the British increased on both sides, with a group of Turkish Cypriots forming Volkan (later renamed to the Turkish Resistance Organisation) paramilitary group to promote partition and the annexation of Cyprus to Turkey as dictated by the Menderes plan. Volkan initially consisted of roughly 100 members, with the stated aim of raising awareness in Turkey of the Cyprus issue and courting military training and support for Turkish Cypriot fighters from the Turkish government.
In June 1958, the British Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, was expected to propose a plan to resolve the Cyprus issue. In light of the new development, the Turks rioted in Nicosia to promote the idea that Greek and Turkish Cypriots could not live together and therefore any plan that did not include partition would not be viable. This violence was soon followed by bombing, Greek Cypriot deaths and looting of Greek Cypriot-owned shops and houses. Greek and Turkish Cypriots started to flee mixed population villages where they were a minority in search of safety. This was effectively the beginning of the segregation of the two communities. On 7 June 1958, a bomb exploded at the entrance of the Turkish Embassy in Cyprus. Following the bombing, Turkish Cypriots looted Greek Cypriot properties. On 26 June 1984, the Turkish Cypriot leader, Rauf Denktaş, admitted on British channel ITV that the bomb was placed by the Turks themselves in order to create tension. On 9 January 1995, Rauf Denktaş repeated his claim to the famous Turkish newspaper Milliyet in Turkey.
The crisis reached a climax on 12 June 1958, when eight Greeks, out of an armed group of thirty five arrested by soldiers of the Royal Horse Guards on suspicion of preparing an attack on the Turkish quarter of Skylloura, were killed in a suspected attack by Turkish Cypriot locals, near the village of Geunyeli, having been ordered to walk back to their village of Kondemenos.
After the EOKA campaign had begun, the British government successfully began to turn the Cyprus issue from a British colonial problem into a Greek-Turkish issue. British diplomacy exerted backstage influence on the Adnan Menderes government, with the aim of making Turkey active in Cyprus. For the British, the attempt had a twofold objective. The EOKA campaign would be silenced as quickly as possible, and Turkish Cypriots would not side with Greek Cypriots against the British colonial claims over the island, which would thus remain under the British. The Turkish Cypriot leadership visited Menderes to discuss the Cyprus issue. When asked how the Turkish Cypriots should respond to the Greek Cypriot claim of enosis, Menderes replied: "You should go to the British foreign minister and request the status quo be prolonged, Cyprus to remain as a British colony". When the Turkish Cypriots visited the British Foreign Secretary and requested for Cyprus to remain a colony, he replied: "You should not be asking for colonialism at this day and age, you should be asking for Cyprus be returned to Turkey, its former owner".
As Turkish Cypriots began to look to Turkey for protection, Greek Cypriots soon understood that enosis was extremely unlikely. The Greek Cypriot leader, Archbishop Makarios III, now set independence for the island as his objective.
Britain resolved to solve the dispute by creating an independent Cyprus. In 1959, all involved parties signed the Zurich Agreements: Britain, Turkey, Greece, and the Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders, Makarios and Dr. Fazil Kucuk, respectively. The new constitution drew heavily on the ethnic composition of the island. The President would be a Greek Cypriot, and the Vice-President a Turkish Cypriot with an equal veto. The contribution to the public service would be set at a ratio of 70:30, and the Supreme Court would consist of an equal number of judges from both communities as well as an independent judge who was not Greek, Turkish or British. The Zurich Agreements were supplemented by a number of treaties. The Treaty of Guarantee stated that secession or union with any state was forbidden, and that Greece, Turkey and Britain would be given guarantor status to intervene if that was violated. The Treaty of Alliance allowed for two small Greek and Turkish military contingents to be stationed on the island, and the Treaty of Establishment gave Britain sovereignty over two bases in Akrotiri and Dhekelia.
On 15 August 1960, the Colony of Cyprus became fully independent as the Republic of Cyprus. The new republic remained within the Commonwealth of Nations.
The new constitution brought dissatisfaction to Greek Cypriots, who felt it to be highly unjust for them for historical, demographic and contributional reasons. Although 80% of the island's population were Greek Cypriots and these indigenous people had lived on the island for thousands of years and paid 94% of taxes, the new constitution was giving the 17% of the population that was Turkish Cypriots, who paid 6% of taxes, around 30% of government jobs and 40% of national security jobs.
Within three years tensions between the two communities in administrative affairs began to show. In particular disputes over separate municipalities and taxation created a deadlock in government. A constitutional court ruled in 1963 Makarios had failed to uphold article 173 of the constitution which called for the establishment of separate municipalities for Turkish Cypriots. Makarios subsequently declared his intention to ignore the judgement, resulting in the West German judge resigning from his position. Makarios proposed thirteen amendments to the constitution, which would have had the effect of resolving most of the issues in the Greek Cypriot favour. Under the proposals, the President and Vice-President would lose their veto, the separate municipalities as sought after by the Turkish Cypriots would be abandoned, the need for separate majorities by both communities in passing legislation would be discarded and the civil service contribution would be set at actual population ratios (82:18) instead of the slightly higher figure for Turkish Cypriots.
The intention behind the amendments has long been called into question. The Akritas plan, written in the height of the constitutional dispute by the Greek Cypriot interior minister Polycarpos Georkadjis, called for the removal of undesirable elements of the constitution so as to allow power-sharing to work. The plan envisaged a swift retaliatory attack on Turkish Cypriot strongholds should Turkish Cypriots resort to violence to resist the measures, stating "In the event of a planned or staged Turkish attack, it is imperative to overcome it by force in the shortest possible time, because if we succeed in gaining command of the situation (in one or two days), no outside, intervention would be either justified or possible." Whether Makarios's proposals were part of the Akritas plan is unclear, however it remains that sentiment towards enosis had not completely disappeared with independence. Makarios described independence as "a step on the road to enosis".[31] Preparations for conflict were not entirely absent from Turkish Cypriots either, with right wing elements still believing taksim (partition) the best safeguard against enosis.
Greek Cypriots however believe the amendments were a necessity stemming from a perceived attempt by Turkish Cypriots to frustrate the working of government. Turkish Cypriots saw it as a means to reduce their status within the state from one of co-founder to that of minority, seeing it as a first step towards enosis. An armed conflict was triggered after December 21, 1963, a period remembered by Turkish Cypriots as Bloody Christmas, when a Greek Cypriot policemen that had been called to help deal with a taxi driver refusing officers already on the scene access to check the identification documents of his customers, took out his gun upon arrival and shot and killed the taxi driver and his partner. Eric Solsten summarised the events as follows: "a Greek Cypriot police patrol, ostensibly checking identification documents, stopped a Turkish Cypriot couple on the edge of the Turkish quarter. A hostile crowd gathered, shots were fired, and two Turkish Cypriots were killed."
In the morning after the shooting, crowds gathered in protest in Northern Nicosia, likely encouraged by the TMT, without incident. On the evening of the 22nd, gunfire broke out, communication lines to the Turkish neighbourhoods were cut, and the Greek Cypriot police occupied the nearby airport. On the 23rd, a ceasefire was negotiated, but did not hold. Fighting, including automatic weapons fire, between Greek and Turkish Cypriots and militias increased in Nicosia and Larnaca. A force of Greek Cypriot irregulars led by Nikos Sampson entered the Nicosia suburb of Omorphita and engaged in heavy firing on armed, as well as by some accounts unarmed, Turkish Cypriots. The Omorphita clash has been described by Turkish Cypriots as a massacre, while this view has generally not been acknowledged by Greek Cypriots.
Further ceasefires were arranged between the two sides, but also failed. By Christmas Eve, the 24th, Britain, Greece, and Turkey had joined talks, with all sides calling for a truce. On Christmas day, Turkish fighter jets overflew Nicosia in a show of support. Finally it was agreed to allow a force of 2,700 British soldiers to help enforce a ceasefire. In the next days, a "buffer zone" was created in Nicosia, and a British officer marked a line on a map with green ink, separating the two sides of the city, which was the beginning of the "Green Line". Fighting continued across the island for the next several weeks.
In total 364 Turkish Cypriots and 174 Greek Cypriots were killed during the violence. 25,000 Turkish Cypriots from 103-109 villages fled and were displaced into enclaves and thousands of Turkish Cypriot houses were ransacked or completely destroyed.
Contemporary newspapers also reported on the forceful exodus of the Turkish Cypriots from their homes. According to The Times in 1964, threats, shootings and attempts of arson were committed against the Turkish Cypriots to force them out of their homes. The Daily Express wrote that "25,000 Turks have already been forced to leave their homes". The Guardian reported a massacre of Turks at Limassol on 16 February 1964.
Turkey had by now readied its fleet and its fighter jets appeared over Nicosia. Turkey was dissuaded from direct involvement by the creation of a United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) in 1964. Despite the negotiated ceasefire in Nicosia, attacks on the Turkish Cypriot persisted, particularly in Limassol. Concerned about the possibility of a Turkish invasion, Makarios undertook the creation of a Greek Cypriot conscript-based army called the "National Guard". A general from Greece took charge of the army, whilst a further 20,000 well-equipped officers and men were smuggled from Greece into Cyprus. Turkey threatened to intervene once more, but was prevented by a strongly worded letter from the American President Lyndon B. Johnson, anxious to avoid a conflict between NATO allies Greece and Turkey at the height of the Cold War.
Turkish Cypriots had by now established an important bridgehead at Kokkina, provided with arms, volunteers and materials from Turkey and abroad. Seeing this incursion of foreign weapons and troops as a major threat, the Cypriot government invited George Grivas to return from Greece as commander of the Greek troops on the island and launch a major attack on the bridgehead. Turkey retaliated by dispatching its fighter jets to bomb Greek positions, causing Makarios to threaten an attack on every Turkish Cypriot village on the island if the bombings did not cease. The conflict had now drawn in Greece and Turkey, with both countries amassing troops on their Thracian borders. Efforts at mediation by Dean Acheson, a former U.S. Secretary of State, and UN-appointed mediator Galo Plaza had failed, all the while the division of the two communities becoming more apparent. Greek Cypriot forces were estimated at some 30,000, including the National Guard and the large contingent from Greece. Defending the Turkish Cypriot enclaves was a force of approximately 5,000 irregulars, led by a Turkish colonel, but lacking the equipment and organisation of the Greek forces.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations in 1964, U Thant, reported the damage during the conflicts:
UNFICYP carried out a detailed survey of all damage to properties throughout the island during the disturbances; it shows that in 109 villages, most of them Turkish-Cypriot or mixed villages, 527 houses have been destroyed while 2,000 others have suffered damage from looting.
The situation worsened in 1967, when a military junta overthrew the democratically elected government of Greece, and began applying pressure on Makarios to achieve enosis. Makarios, not wishing to become part of a military dictatorship or trigger a Turkish invasion, began to distance himself from the goal of enosis. This caused tensions with the junta in Greece as well as George Grivas in Cyprus. Grivas's control over the National Guard and Greek contingent was seen as a threat to Makarios's position, who now feared a possible coup.[citation needed] The National Guard and Cyprus Police began patrolling the Turkish Cypriot enclaves of Ayios Theodoros and Kophinou, and on November 15 engaged in heavy fighting with the Turkish Cypriots.
By the time of his withdrawal 26 Turkish Cypriots had been killed. Turkey replied with an ultimatum demanding that Grivas be removed from the island, that the troops smuggled from Greece in excess of the limits of the Treaty of Alliance be removed, and that the economic blockades on the Turkish Cypriot enclaves be lifted. Grivas was recalled by the Athens Junta and the 12,000 Greek troops were withdrawn. Makarios now attempted to consolidate his position by reducing the number of National Guard troops, and by creating a paramilitary force loyal to Cypriot independence. In 1968, acknowledging that enosis was now all but impossible, Makarios stated, "A solution by necessity must be sought within the limits of what is feasible which does not always coincide with the limits of what is desirable."
After 1967 tensions between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots subsided. Instead, the main source of tension on the island came from factions within the Greek Cypriot community. Although Makarios had effectively abandoned enosis in favour of an 'attainable solution', many others continued to believe that the only legitimate political aspiration for Greek Cypriots was union with Greece.
On his arrival, Grivas began by establishing a nationalist paramilitary group known as the National Organization of Cypriot Fighters (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston B or EOKA-B), drawing comparisons with the EOKA struggle for enosis under the British colonial administration of the 1950s.
The military junta in Athens saw Makarios as an obstacle. Makarios's failure to disband the National Guard, whose officer class was dominated by mainland Greeks, had meant the junta had practical control over the Cypriot military establishment, leaving Makarios isolated and a vulnerable target.
During the first Turkish invasion, Turkish troops invaded Cyprus territory on 20 July 1974, invoking its rights under the Treaty of Guarantee. This expansion of Turkish-occupied zone violated International Law as well as the Charter of the United Nations. Turkish troops managed to capture 3% of the island which was accompanied by the burning of the Turkish Cypriot quarter, as well as the raping and killing of women and children. A temporary cease-fire followed which was mitigated by the UN Security Council. Subsequently, the Greek military Junta collapsed on July 23, 1974, and peace talks commenced in which a democratic government was installed. The Resolution 353 was broken after Turkey attacked a second time and managed to get a hold of 37% of Cyprus territory. The Island of Cyprus was appointed a Buffer Zone by the United Nations, which divided the island into two zones through the 'Green Line' and put an end to the Turkish invasion. Although Turkey announced that the occupied areas of Cyprus to be called the Federated Turkish State in 1975, it is not legitimised on a worldwide political scale. The United Nations called for the international recognition of independence for the Republic of Cyprus in the Security Council Resolution 367.
In the years after the Turkish invasion of northern Cyprus one can observe a history of failed talks between the two parties. The 1983 declaration of the independent Turkish Republic of Cyprus resulted in a rise of inter-communal tensions and made it increasingly hard to find mutual understanding. With Cyprus' interest of a possible EU membership and a new UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 1997 new hopes arose for a fresh start. International involvement from sides of the US and UK, wanting a solution to the Cyprus dispute prior to the EU accession led to political pressures for new talks. The believe that an accession without a solution would threaten Greek-Turkish relations and acknowledge the partition of the island would direct the coming negotiations.
Over the course of two years a concrete plan, the Annan plan was formulated. In 2004 the fifth version agreed upon from both sides and with the endorsement of Turkey, US, UK and EU then was presented to the public and was given a referendum in both Cypriot communities to assure the legitimisation of the resolution. The Turkish Cypriots voted with 65% for the plan, however the Greek Cypriots voted with a 76% majority against. The Annan plan contained multiple important topics. Firstly it established a confederation of two separate states called the United Cyprus Republic. Both communities would have autonomous states combined under one unified government. The members of parliament would be chosen according to the percentage in population numbers to ensure a just involvement from both communities. The paper proposed a demilitarisation of the island over the next years. Furthermore it agreed upon a number of 45000 Turkish settlers that could remain on the island. These settlers became a very important issue concerning peace talks. Originally the Turkish government encouraged Turks to settle in Cyprus providing transfer and property, to establish a counterpart to the Greek Cypriot population due to their 1 to 5 minority. With the economic situation many Turkish-Cypriot decided to leave the island, however their departure is made up by incoming Turkish settlers leaving the population ratio between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots stable. However all these points where criticised and as seen in the vote rejected mainly by the Greek Cypriots. These name the dissolution of the „Republic of Cyprus", economic consequences of a reunion and the remaining Turkish settlers as reason. Many claim that the plan was indeed drawing more from Turkish-Cypriot demands then Greek-Cypriot interests. Taking in consideration that the US wanted to keep Turkey as a strategic partner in future Middle Eastern conflicts.
A week after the failed referendum the Republic of Cyprus joined the EU. In multiple instances the EU tried to promote trade with Northern Cyprus but without internationally recognised ports this spiked a grand debate. Both side endure their intention of negotiations, however without the prospect of any new compromises or agreements the UN is unwilling to start the process again. Since 2004 negotiations took place in numbers but without any results, both sides are strongly holding on to their position without an agreeable solution in sight that would suit both parties.

Prospect Cemetery, the early graveyard of the small town of Jamaica, is one of the few remaining Colonial cemeteries in Queens. In the early 1600s, this site was part of the land belonging to the local tribe of Indians known as the "Yemecah", meaning beaver, an animal which thrived in the area. In 1656, a group of English colonists petitioned the Dutch Governor-General, Peter Stuyvesant, to grant them a settlement which was near today's John F. Kennedy Airport.
Apparently, this site was not satisfactory, and later in the same year, the colonists moved northward, and described themselves: "We owners by purchase from the Indians and grant from the Governor and Council — living at ye new plantation near unto beaver pond, commonly called Jamaica -- ... have reserved unto ourselves 10 acres of planting land a man ...." The Dutch called this area "Rustdorp", but after the surrender of the colony to the British, "Jamaica" was used exclusively.
In its first year of existence, the settlement elected Daniel Denton, a member of a family which was to remain in the area for generations, as clerk of both the town and church, illustrating the interrelationship between church and government in this early period. It was not until thirty years later, in 1686, however, that Jamaica was granted its charter as a village by British Governor, Thomas Dongan.
The earliest record of the cemetery dates from November, 1668, when townsman John Wascot was hired to enclose the "burring plas", then ten rods square, with a fence, five rails high.
The cemetery was established, therefore., shortly before 1668, since it is doubtful that the town would allow such hallowed ground to stand unprotected for very long. Several references were made to the "burring place" during the 17th century, when citing other locations in the town.
The cemetery was generally known as the Presbyterian burial ground, since it was associated with the Old Stone Church built in the 1690s, which stood near today's Union Hall Street. Due, however, to the close interaction of church and state -- the church served also as the town hall -- the cemetery was as well the property of the Town of Jamaica.
The Presbyterian congregation in Jamaica came to blows with the Episcopalians in 1704, when the property belonging to the Church was confiscated and turned over to a representative of the Church of England, William Urquhart, an Episcopalian minister. Urquhart occupied the parsonage for five years, until he died in 1709.
Shortly afterwards his wife surrendered the property to Reverend George McNish, a Presbyterian minister. However, simultaneously, another Episcopalian preacher arrived in Jamaica, who thought he should occupy the parsonage. Ultimately, the decision, aided by. the authority of the Presbyterian sheriff, was made by the town, and Reverend McNish moved into the parsonage.
In 1753, the intimate relationship between church and town came to an end when it was voted at a town meeting to grant the land set apart for the use of "a minister of Presbyterian denomination" to the Presbyterian Church and congregation, for them "to have and to hold ... forever in trust". The cemetery, however, was not specified as part of this transfer.
As late as 1879, the Town of Jamaica still retained title to the original burying ground, but it may be possible that the Presbyterian Church used the cemetery, while not actually owning it. When the Presbyterian Church applied to Governor William Tryon for incorporation in 1775, "a cemetery for the interment of their Dead" was mentioned, but whether this was the town burial ground, or another separate graveyard, is not known.
During the Revolutionary War, the men of Jamaica, many of whom were buried in the cemetery, played a prominent role.
This area, was essentially a Loyalist stronghold, but a militant minority formed a local Committee of Correspondence and Observation to popularize patriot sentiment. The Committee chairman, Elias Baylis, died in 1777 and was buried in the cemetery. The tombstone erected over his grave after 1843 tells of his long suffering at the hands of the British during the war. Captain J.J. Skidmore, also buried here, formed a band of Minutemen, made up of local soldiers, which later became part of Colonel Lasher's First New York Battalion. This group held Cobble Stone Hill Fort during the Battle of Long Island.
The early graveyard was entered from an extension of Beaver Road, on the north side of today's Prospect Cemetery. Gradually, in the first half of the 19th century, its size was increased as various individuals purchased the land surrounding the cemetery and laid it out in family plots. Although it had been a common practice to bury one's relatives in their family farm property, when the farm was sold, often the family remains were removed.
One such instance occurred in 1840, when Garret Nostrand sold his family farm at the Wallabout and purchased a lot in the Jamaica graveyard in order to bury the boxes containing the remains of his ancestors. Such private lots as these extended the boundaries of the cemetery at Its western and its northern ends.
Still another reason for the purchase of cemetery lots was the incentive for profit. One of the largest lot holders was Isaac Simonson, a local carpenter, whose house stood on a large tract of land to the south of the original burying ground. In 1841, Simonson purchased some land to the west of the cemetery and subdivided it into lots for sale. He advertised these burial plots as "adjoining the old Presbyterian Burial ground", and today this section forms the western extension of the cemetery.
Three acres were added to the cemetery in 1856, when Nicholas Ludlum, a wealthy New York City hardware merchant whose family had long resided in Jamaica, purchased the land between the east side of the "old burying ground" and Prospect Street (today's 159th Street) from the Long Island Railroad Company.
The addition encompassed "about 10 lots", most of which Ludlum sold. According to an article in the Long Island Farmer of 1856, Ludlum planned to improve and beautify the cemetery grounds. In the next year, 1857, Ludlum, at his own expense, had a small chapel erected, as a memorial to his three daughters, each of whom had died at an early age.
Ludlum's first daughter, Cornelia Maria, died at the age of thirteen, while the next, Mary Cecelia, lived only to the age of one, and his third, Mary, who had married Lewis Cass, Jr., the U.S. Minister in Rome, died at the age of twenty one. Called the Chapel of the Sisters, the building was to be used for family interment.
Small in scale, this Romanesque Revival style chapel is of random ashlar fieldstone with decorative light brown-colored sandstone trim. The gable-roofed structure, originally crowned with handsome iron cresting, has gabled porticoes at both its 159th Street entrance and its cemetery side. Since the chapel was used for burials, the funeral party no doubt entered the chapel at the 159th Street entrance, and after the services made its way to the grave site through the cemetery doorway.
A large round arch, completely enframed with alternating voussoirs of fieldstone and sandstone, leads to the deeply recessed arched doorway at the 159th Street entrance. Above the door, a stone tympanum, encircled by an inscription, is ornamented with the religious symbols of the Bible and a cross, as well as a scythe, representing death. This portico, like that at the cemetery side, is embellished with sandstone quoins and also a row of corbels which follows the rake of the gable.
On the cemetery side, the large round-arched door, now filled in, is flanked on either side by small, narrow arched windows with sandstone trim. At the north and south ends of the chapel, large stained-glass rose windows elegantly pierce the heavy fieldstone walls. The chapel was a handsome addition to the cemetery, and it remains today one of its principal points of interest. This three-acre Ludlum extension greatly changed the configuration of the older graveyard, since the cemetery was now entered from the east at Prospect Street (159th Street), with the more recent grave sites near the chapel.
The cemetery, consisting of a number of different sections added over a 200-year period, was taken over by a single group in 1879, when the Prospect Cemetery Association of Jamaica Village, Inc., was formed. This is the first record of the name "Prospect" for the cemetery. Before the Prospect Cemetery Association acquired the property, the cemetery was still owned by the Town of Jamaica. Eventually, the Association, which still exists today, received title to all of the cemetery grounds.
Very little has chanced in Prospect Cemetery since the end of the 19th century, save for the addition of new graves, narked frequently by tall obelisks, which contrast vividly with the earlier, smaller gravestones. During the summer of 1976, selected family grave sites were cleared of debris and brush as part of a Bicentennial Project, sponsored by Community Planning Board 12 in Queens.
Prospect Cemetery is a valuable reminder of much of the early history of Queens, and especially of Jamaica. The earliest section of the cemetery begins approximately at the site of the Raynor family plot and extends to the west, to join Isaac Simonson's 1841 addition.
This original portion is also much narrower than the present graveyard and totals an area of 165 square feet. Many of the old tombstones are of brownstone with various types of ornamentation. It is believed that the earliest gravestone in the old part of the cemetery dates from 1709.
Another old tombstone is that of Thomas Wiggens, who died in 1728, His brownstone grave marker is carved in a very simple manner with his name and the date of death. The 1737 tombstone of Thomas Walton is more richly carved. Its three-arched top is ornamented with an angel's head of a primitive design, and a decorative curvilinear motif extending along either side. The angel head was a common theme on gravestones and occurs quite often in the cemetery.
The brownstone grave marker of Obadiah Mills, who died at the age of twenty six on September 17, 1773, also displays an angel with wings. In some instances, skulls replaced the angel's head. Many of these early grave markers, also ornamented with curvilinear designs, are' of limestone.
A number of Revolutionary War veterans, many of whom served with Skidmore's Minutemen, are buried in the cemetery. These include several members of the earlier generation of the Ludlum family who were part of the Minutemen band. Increase Carpenter (1733/6-1807), who fought in the Battle of Long Island, is also buried here.
One of the most renowned figures in the cemetery is Egbert Benson (1746-1833), who in 1794 served as Justice of the Supreme Court and in 1801 was Chief Justice of the U.S. Circuit Court, which was abolished soon after. Benson then retired to Jamaica, where he died.
Behind this old section of the cemetery, extend the lots sold by Isaac Simonson. Since these date from a later period, a few obelisks characteristic of the later 19th century, may be seen there.
It was common for Negroes to be excluded from white cemeteries, and such was the case with Prospect. One exception, however, was made and is recorded as: "Jane Lyons, a colored woman, who upwards of 65 years was a faithful and devoted domestic in the family of James Hariman, Sr., of this village, died December 19, 1858, Age 75 years."
Many names of the important early families of the area appear throughout the cemetery, and these include Sutphin, after whom Sutphin Boulevard was named, and Van Wickes, for whom the Van Wyck Expressway was named. Relatives of many of the original settlers of the Village of Jamaica continued to be buried in the cemetery at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries.
These graves are marked by ornate tombstones and tall granite obelisks. A descendant of one of the early local families, John H. Brinkerhoff (d.1903), the village supervisor, and his wife Laura (d. 1891), have a richly decorated tombstone, topped with a small ornamental sarcophagus, incised with the letter "B".
The very early origins of the cemetery, together with its 19th century additions, make it an important part of the history of Jamaica. Its early Colonial period is marked by the picturesque tombstones of many members of the town's prominent families, as well as several veterans of the Revolutionary War.
The Simonson and Ludlum additions border, in part, the old graveyard and are occupied by many 19th-century obelisks. The fine Romanesque Revival Chapel of the Sisters is a particularly handsome feature of the cemetery and is a monument to an important local family, the Ludlums. The cemetery remains today in a well-preserved state, due primarily to the care and interest of the Prospect Cemetery Association.

Ecovolis program has proven successful in dramatically increasing bicycle use in Tirana, which, formerly, was a city without a developed bicycle culture. Ecovolis program is the first project in Albania that provides low-income adults with commuter bicycles as well as a donating program for children bicycles. The program recently completed two major steps, opening new bike stations in the city of Durrës and integrating Tourist Information Point Service to the bicycles stations' structure.
History
The Tirana Community Bicycle Albania project won financial support from the George Soros Open Society Foundation Albania (OSFA). An even larger contribution came from the US-based Pedal for Progress organization, which donated 450 bicycles. Sixty of these were used road bikes, which were modified and painted by local technicians to serve as public bikes in the Ecovolis scheme. Another portion was set aside to donate to children and to activists and volunteers at PASS. Still another portion were diverted to the project's Eco Bicycle Shop, a social enterprise which sells bikes for USD 50-150 and reinvests profits for the service and maintenance of Ecovolis bicycles. The main objective of the program was to introduce the community to an inexpensive, environmental friendly form of transport -- the bicycle; to sell used bikes at low prices; to donate bikes to the children of needy families and to PASS volunteers; to establish a bike sharing-scheme in the city (Ecovolis); and to employ financially disadvantaged people and young students to operate the bike-sharing scheme.
System
Each Ecovolis station is staffed by two employees in two shifts and contains 30 -- 60 bicycles. In order to use the bicycles it is required to provide a personal identification document (such as passport or ID card) or by subscribing to the Ecovolis membership Card.
The first black and red bicycles, (also the colors of the Albanian flag) were donated from US-organization Pedal for Progress, (which collect and donate used bicycles). As these bicycles were of different types, converting them for safe and comfortable public use took months of work. The price per bicycle varies from 60 US$ to 90 US$ each. The bicycle is equipped with a front bicycle basket, a behind carrier, a comfortable saddle and a public fender with the Ecovolis sign.
The bicycle stations also provide touristic information to the visitors and a list of the city attractions. Moreover, being a non-profit social enterprise, during particular days the program offers free bicycle service, cycling courses, donations of bicycles and helmets for children in need, bike tours and a bicycle recycle program.

Description:- Motorbike Adventures supply and fit motorcycle HID lights, motorbike intercom systems from Autocom and TecStar, motorbike adventure panniers from metal mule to customers around the UK. We have a workshop based in Bedfordshire just off the A421 Junction 13 of the M1. We also operate a mobile service where we come to you! We charge £0.45p per mile to fit at your location which can be home or work! We often need a power source and cover to do this!
HID LIGHTS:- Fitting HID lights to you motorbike or car greatly increases your visibility during the day as much as it allows you to see better at night. HID lights for motorcycles draw less power than your original bulbs so for example a 55 Watt HID light replacing the standard 55 Watt filament bulb with only draw 35 Watts from your alternator making you alternator work less. On top of this Motorbike HID lights are 300% brighter than normal lights. Here at www.motorbikeadventures.co.uk we use 6000 Kelvin bulbs with an array of fitments including but not limited to:- H1, H3, H7, and H11.
Motorcycle HID lights come in two parts the bulb and the ballast with starter. The bulbs are easy to fit and we have yet to find a bike that we have not been able to fit the kits too! The normal lighting systems of motorbikes is shockingly poor and HID lights add a considerable visual presence to your bike! We have found that HID’s it greatly reduce car drivers pulling out on you on those all too often lane changes where they appear not to have even noticed your there! Bulbs last longer as there is no filament to break and changing both Dip beam and Main is recommended as the HID’s are so good it tends to render your normal Main beam useless! Installation time for a main and dip beam is 1 and half hours approx!
INTERCOMS:- Autocom Intercoms for motorbikes are a great way of communicating and listening to information you need on the move without taking your hands from the handlebars! Our intercom systems allow you to automatically answer your phone, listen to directions from your Garmin Zumo GPS and play your favourite album from your music collection with the need to take your hands from the handlebars. If you carry a pillion the system allows for you to have two way communications with your pillion and for your pillion to have automatic selection and use of their own mobile phone and music!
Best fitted by a professional this system can give you many years of great riding and once you have used one we don’t believe your ever look back. We find most people have problems when inexperienced people try to fit systems like this without the knowledge and experience to know how to set the system up and what elements to use together. Wired intercom system can currently perform multiple task simultaneously which cannot be said for Bluetooth units. In addition to multi tasking the autocom units do not need recharging as they work direct from the motorbikes electrical system and are free from the need to carry fragile charging units. A correctly setup Autocom system will allow the rider to use the system as well off road as on road. The Autocom systems we supply and fit have been used on expeditions round the globe. Often power is not available in remote places and often when power is available people for get to charge their headsets or have other items needing charging so forget the intercom system.
PANNIERS:-We do claim to be experts when it comes to HID Lights, Autocom systems and kitting out a motorbike for local or world travel. Panniers are one of the most important items to consider when considering what panniers to buy. We understand most people have a budget, and need to make their resources’ last however many expensive mistakes have been made because the wrong pannier system has been selected and then a new system had to be purchased and if the this has cost the extra money that would have been used to buy a decent pannier system in the first place. Metal Mule panniers have been tested round the globe, not just by ourselves but by many professional originations. Strength, waterproof, durability and design our key to great pannier system.
Metal Mule panniers offer the best in the areas we have mentioned and more. Whilst other pannier systems leak, pressurise when going over altitude, fold up on small impacts and fall to pieces with continued use our pannier keep on going. It’s an interesting concept that serious travels and expeditions companies use Metal Mules for their own bikes! This is for one reason only! Because they work well in all conditions and in all weathers.

news.freightaccess.com/?p=365: Index Shows Freight Quotes Are Increasing Faster Than Freight Tonnage. By Brad Hollister
Freight expenses are being driven greater simply by sky-rocketing diesel-powered energy costs and tightening carrier capacity.
Amongst the transportation marketplace's primary indexes of U.S. Transportation Freight transportation has surpassed levels last month which exhibit what supply chain experts, third party logistics experts, and freight carriers are reporting: reduced freight capacity and increasing diesel fuel rates are causing transportation expenses to increase much faster than tonnage.
The transportation index, released by freight audit and payment companies Cass Information Systems, is a collection of freight invoices and freight shipments of the 400 manufacturers, distributor, and warehousing companies which make up Cass' customer base. The freight freight index has reported more than six percent jump from February 2011 to March of 2011 which demonstrates soaring transportation rates. Transportation costs continue to rise nearly thirty-four percent from cost levels of just one year ago.
While February is traditionally a slow volume month for the transportation industry, the latest figures released by Cass show a significantly higher number of freight shipments than just one year ago.
Numerous supply chain professionals believe this trend will continue throughout the year. Major freight marketplace masters are suggesting further tightening of freight capacity and soaring soaring diesel fuel prices will increase transportation rates considerably throughout the year. Most of these freight marketplace authorities see this direction continuing throughout the remainder of the year.
The report released from Cass' Freight Bill Auditing Services has linked the increase in freight volumes to show the economy is growing and an economic recovery is underway. Whether or not an economic recovery is underway, there are certainly challenges ahead before sharp growth can occur. For example, the average price for just a gallon of diesel fuel is up more Twenty-Five Percent (or more than One-Dollar) from this period last year. California and New York are the states reporting the highest diesel fuel, with costs nearing the $4.50 per gallon.
Leading Supply Chain Analysts at JPMorgan Chase, reported research which encouraged that the existing growth in shipments already underway in the freight marketplace was in fact considerably better than the increase throughout the last growth craze for trucking companies, which occurred between 2004 and 2006. JPMorgan Chase analysis was in fact also careful to not that freight shipment growth during February of 2011 could be explained by the milder than normal winter which much of the mid-west experienced, when compared to other years.
A lot of masters view the Cass transportation freight index as a measurement of volume trends in the less-than-truckload and truckload markets. These professionals believe the shipment transportation index is soaring at a swifter pace than the industry's daily volume figures, a sign that the firm's first-quarter industry shipment volume forecast seem to be a conservative estimate going forward.
Due to the fragmented nature of the truckload marketplace, it a lot of authorities agree that connecting the Cass Transportation index with the freight marketplace trends in truckload is more complex. Freight marketplace information is suggesting present demand for truckload freight transportation is trending consistent with or slightly higher than average demand patterns of the historical truckload business cycle.
So far in 2011, the freight transportation data suggests a shift of power back to the hand of the freight carriers and owner operators. As proven by the first three months of 2011, capacity has become harder to come by and owner operators have been able to command much higher charges for freight freight shipments and cargo deliveries. Multiple economic factors have helped trucking companies and nationwide fleets restore bargaining power, including the mounting expense of diesel fuel. Authorities imposed mandates and regulation have also limited the free market operation of most carrier fleets and truckers which have squeezed operations and increased the price of doing business. Numerous authorities believe this pattern to continue throughout 2011, whether or not an economic recovery gains even further momentum.
********************
SUMMARY:
The Freight Marketplace is experiencing a change in negotiating power from shipper & broker to carrier and owner operator. Freight demand and shipment volume continues to outpace truck capacity driving freight quotes higher. Shippers, manufacturers, and third party logistics firms are experiencing difficulty finding access to freight carriers and trucking companies at contract payments that they had formerly had negotiated.

Police targeted by paint bombs infront of Parliament.
Over 20,000 students marched through London in protest on the day Parliament was due to vote on the increase in student University tuition fees. When the march reached Trafalgar Square, many protesters, finding Whitehall blocked by police, moved towards Parliament square via The Mall and Horse Guards. Lines of police behind crush barriers blocked access to Parliament.
Protesters brushed aside a weak line of police and then started to try and unsuccessfully break through the lines of police in front of Parliament. Parliament Green was occupied with the temporary fencing surrounding it being broken down, and used to attack police, or defend protesters against police. Fighting between police and protesters continued during the afternoon particularly, including mounted police charges, on Broad Sanctuary.
At about 5pm, the kettle on the north side of Whitehall was broken by protesters, with further lines of police, both mounted and on foot having to move the length of Whitehall to re-establish the kettle.
With the news, in the early evening, that the vote had been passed, there was an immediate increase in anger amongst the protesters. The Treasury in particular was attacked, with riot police being stationed inside the building.
Lines of riot police using round and long shields eventually cleared Parliament Square. Over 1000 students were held in a kettle on Westminster Bridge until nearly midnight.
There were reports, many unsubstantiated as yet, of police attacking peaceful protesters trying to leave the kettle. Student Alfie Meadows was hit on the head by a truncheon, and had to have an emergency, life saving, operation to treat an intracranial bleed.
Smaller groups of protesters roamed streets nearby with shops, including Topshop in Oxford Street being attacked as well as a car containing Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
Gangs and black block protesters from several mainland European countries attended the protest. The violence on the protesters side, even after the news of the vote result, was perpetrated by a minority. The majority of students were sitting around waiting to exit the kettle, trying to keep warm, or dancing to music.
Climate Rush: Stop the Rail Fare Hikes protest, Waterloo Station. 16.08.2011
Protesters from eco-campaign group Climate Rush, the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT), the Rail & Maritime Union (RMT) and the Public and Commercial Services Union (PCS) held a morning rush-hour protest outside London's Waterloo Station in response to the British Government's plan to allow train operators to massively increase rail fares by up to 28% by 2015 - applying increases of 3% over Retail Price Inflation - which will cause massive hardship to hundreds of thousands of already hard-pressed commuters who, already struggling with the rapidly increasiing cost of living and frozen wages, are faced with three choices: Pay the extortionate increase which for many will cost over £500 per year, be driven off the railways and back into their cars or either move closer to London or leave their jobs and try and find jobs closer to home.
A representative from Passenger Focus pointed out that train operators already had the option to increase some fares by as much as 5% above the average, meaning that passengers using certain types of tickets could be hit with a whopping 13% increase in 2012 alone. Already the cost of getting to work is the biggest single item in the monthly budget - bigger than mortgage payments and bigger than rent, as fares are set to increase four times faster than wages in the next year.
Aside from the harsh economic effects this will bring, Climate Rush is especially concerned that many will be driven back onto the already overburdened road networks, increasing congestion and air pollution, and also making a mockery of the notion of cheap and affordable mass transit. Financially, gridlocked roads and lost productivity costs the London economy in excess of £1.6 billion per annum, and the long-term health costs due to traffic pollution also runs into the billions - a direct burden not only on the Public Purse, but also on those directly affected by the massive increase in childhood asthma, and those who become unable to work (or have died) due to cardiovascular and respiratory diseases.
After many years now of privately operated rail companies milking the subsidy system for billions of pounds of taxpayer's money and paying massive amounts to themselves and their already-bloated shareholders, the train operating companies have embarked on a dishonest hand-wringing campaign to justify these increases, claiming they need this extra money to pay for all the new rolling stock and network improvements that they were supposed to have been doing for all these years instead of shovelling all that public money offshore. Now the network is under severe stress, and they want to extort more and more money from the travelling public. The money must come from fare increases, they say, to lower the general burden on The Taxpayer - leaving us to ask the question 'If the rail infrastructure is in such a bad state now, what have you done with all our money, and who's going to be prosecuted first for looting?'. (That last bit was a joke, of course, because as we all know if you blatantly steal in the millions or billions the government will protect you at all costs, but if you're poor and angry and you steal a fucking donut during a riot you'll get 16 months in prison and have your entire future blighted by a criminal record... Oops! There I go again...)
Speakers at the protest were Maria Eagle - Labour shadow spokeswoman for Transport and Stephen Joseph, chief executive of the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT).
