We began the Inca Trail, January 4, 1993. Our starting point is Chillca, about km. 76 from Cuzco. Our first day's hike takes us through semi-desert terrain. Daughters Nataly, Sophia, Vivian and my wife Hedy. Guides Holgar, Silverio, Sirio and Mauro.
In this photo you can see our "papis". Our porters were amazing! They left after we did so they could pack up and then would pass us with smiles as they headed off to the next campsite to set up for lunch/dinner! They ranged from 20-61 years of age and were in amazing shape and worked so hard! I seriously don't know how they did it!

looking up to dead woman's pass.... that's the boob on the right. and the adam's apple right above that. you judge for yourself.
toughest bit of the trail - final sprint to the top!
The white stuff on this cactus is Cochineal - some sort of insect or something. Anyways whatever it is it is used to dye wool red!
The first part of the hike was in a very strange area - it was very, very cold but cactus plants were growing! Something to do with the high elevation, lack of moisture, but proximity to the equator. It was odd.
