By the mid-eighties, the narrow-gauge Ferrocarriles de Vía Estrecha (FEVE) network on Majorca had shrunk to just one line between Palma and Inca. Some modernisation had recently taken place, however, with conversion from three-foot to metre gauge.

The Inca tern (Larosterna inca) is a seabird in the family Sternidae. It is the only member of the genus Larosterna.

This uniquely plumaged bird breeds on the coasts of Peru and Chile, and is restricted to the Humboldt current. It is an erratic, rare visitant to the southwest coast of Ecuador. It can be identified by its dark grey body, white moustache on both sides of its head, and red-orange beak and feet.

The Inca tern is a large tern, approximately 40 cm long. Sexes are similar; the adult is mostly slate-grey with white restricted to the facial plumes and the trailing edges of the wings. The large bill and legs are dark red. Immature birds are purple-brown, and gradually develop the facial plumes.

The Inca tern breeds on rocky cliffs. It nests in a hollow or burrow or sometimes the old nest of a Humboldt penguin, and lays one or two eggs. The eggs are incubated for about 4 weeks, and the chicks leave the nest after 7 weeks

The Inca tern feeds primarily on small fish, such as anchovies. The species spots its prey from the air, diving into the water to grab meals with its pointed beak. Its call is a cat-like mew.

The “Baños del Inca” (” Inca’s Bath” or “Inca Baths”) are a set of natural hot springs located to six kilometers of the city of Cajamarca in the north Andean zone of Peru to 2667 meters above sea level. This recreational and historical complex is composed by several gardens and pools. The average temperatures of these hot mineral springs is around 70ºC (158ºF) and according to the popular belief, the thermal waters possess therapeutic properties for treatment of bone and nervous system disorders; as well as bronchial and rheumatic sufferings.

Planckendael is a zoo, located on the grounds of Planckendael castle in the village district of Muizen, in Mechelen, Belgium. In 1956 the Royal Zoological Society of Antwerp (KMDA) bought the Planckendael estate in order to acquire a larger space for animals than what they owned: the city zoo in Antwerp.

Planckendael also has extensive leisure facilities: For children there is a large separate play area.

The Incas, as some other Andean indians, were master of stone work and architecture of incredible beauty. Although they were short people, they worked with huge stones, many far taller than they. No one knows how they did this. The above image shows the obvious mastery and makes clear the size of the rocks. I am 5'10" and when I stood in this entrance way, I was half as tall as the whole entrance way. This photo was taken in Pisac, an Inca settlement not far from Cuzco. It is now in ruins. Yet these rocks are still in place after many earthquakes. The stone walls in Cuzco have outlasted the Spanish buildings built around them. Here is a typical wall that runs along a street in Cuzco: www.flickr.com/photos/rich_eye/2659208253/in/set-72157606...

An Inca Dove (Columbina inca) at the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum in Tucson, Arizona.

A 500-year-old figurine, found buried with an Inca mummy, harks back to a time when the Inca Empire stretched from Colombia to central Chile and ruled more than 12 million people.

Rich in colorful textiles and well-ordered cities and marked by occasional human sacrifices and mummifications, the empire was conquered by the Spanish in 1532 but retains its hold on the human imagination.

The capital city of the Incan empire was Cuzco, which was located in the Andes Mountains in today’s Peru. What is left of the Inca civilization is scattered over the highlands of the Andes. The descendants of the Inca are mostly peasants who make up about half of Peru’s population.
