On our first day in Cusco we tried Inca Kola. For me it was the drink of choice for the rest of the trip. Later in teh rain forest we saw the lemon grass plant that is used to flavor Inca Kola.

The real testament to the craftsmanship of Inca stonecutting and engineering of buildings is the fact that after so many centuries, so much of Machu Picchu walls and buildings are still standing – even though this is historically a region rocked by earthquakes. In this image, you see how slabs were notched and fitted together so snugly that nothing like concrete, cement or adobe was even needed. Machu Picchu, Peru.

The Inca people were fabulous stonemasons, as you can see from this doorway, built over 500 years ago in Cuzco, Peru. When the Spanish arrived they destroyed most Inca buildings, but preserved many of the stone foundations and built their own buildings on top of them.

Inca Tech did the first gold plated power plugs in the world soon to be copied by many other companies.

This extremely scarce ritual hair piece was a garment produced by a class called the "Chosen Women". They were to be worn by a priest during religious ceremonies to call forth the vital forces of nature symbolized by hair. The headdress consists of a double panel of (96) finely braided hair, woven together by a thin braided camelid border of natural tan color. Size of inside frame is 25" tall by 20" across. Inca, Cusco/Central Highlands regions, Peru. 1470-1532 Excellent condition.

One of the most remarkable experiences during my time in Peru was spending several morning observing a colony of these beautiful terns.

During the first and last hours of the days the colony would burst in activity. Amazing numbers of terns will head out into the ocean to fish and gain energy for the night. Taking advantage of the good light, I sat down on the rocks beside the colony and waited for one of them to fly by carrying a fish. After a several minutes of waiting one flew close enough for my to get a good shot.

No mortar! When the Spanish conquered Cusco, Peru, they destroyed much of the Inca stonework and used the stone to rebuild their own structures. Yet, some of the Spanish Colonial buildings are built on undestroyed foundations of Inca craftsmanship. Interestingly, the Spanish buildings fall during earthquakes, yet the unmortared Inca works persevere.

Clima en el Camino

Camino Inca

Inca Trail Description:

Visitors come from all parts of the world to Peru, not only to see Machu Picchu but to walk the Inca Trail, the most famous hike in South America. They come to see the ruins and the scenery which makes this trail so famous. The total distance of the Inca trail is approximately 43 kilometres, departing from the place known as Kilometre 88. To begin the trip, one crosses the narrow bridge at Kusicancha, and afterwards heads towards the left hand side of a forest of Eucalyptus trees. Camping on this night is either in Wayllabamba or Llullucha. The second day is more difficult, as you have to climb to 4200 metres at the Pass of Warmiwañusqa (Dead Woman’s pass). The third day is the longest, but also the most interesting for many people as you can visit impressive ruins like Runkuracay and Sayaqmarca. Camping is either in Phuyupatamarca or Wiñayhuayna. On the final day many groups leave early to see the sun rise over Machu Picchu from the Inti Punku (sun gate). The remainder of the day is spent exploring this fabulous ancient city.
