One of the most remarkable experiences during my time in Peru was spending several morning observing a colony of these beautiful terns.
During the first and last hours of the days the colony would burst in activity. Amazing numbers of terns will head out into the ocean to fish and gain energy for the night. Taking advantage of the good light, I sat down on the rocks beside the colony and waited for one of them to fly by carrying a fish. After a several minutes of waiting one flew close enough for my to get a good shot.

Enjoy a gorgeous 4-day hike to Machu Picchu along original paved Inca pathways, a variety of fascinating Inca sites, and the beautiful scenery of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

Visitors come from all parts of the world to Peru, not only to see Machu Picchu but to walk the Inca Trail, the most famous hike in South America. They come to see the ruins and the scenery which makes this trail so famous. The total distance of the Inca trail is approximately 43 kilometres, departing from the place known as Kilometre 88. To begin the trip, one crosses the narrow bridge at Kusicancha, and afterwards heads towards the left hand side of a forest of Eucalyptus trees. Camping on this night is either in Wayllabamba or Llullucha. The second day is more difficult, as you have to climb to 4200 metres at the Pass of Warmiwañusqa (Dead Woman’s pass). The third day is the longest, but also the most interesting for many people as you can visit impressive ruins like Runkuracay and Sayaqmarca. Camping is either in Phuyupatamarca or Wiñayhuayna. On the final day many groups leave early to see the sun rise over Machu Picchu from the Inti Punku (sun gate). The remainder of the day is spent exploring this fabulous ancient city.
The Brown Inca is found along the pacific slopes of the Andes, in Ecuador and Colombia, at mid-elevations. This is a mostly brown hummingbird with a white patch on its shoulders and a iridescent purple throat. It readily comes to feeders.

The Inca Trail is by far the most famous trek in South America and is rated by many to be in the top 5 treks in the world. In just 26 miles (43km) it manages to combine beautiful mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest, subtropical jungle and, of course, a stunning mix of Inca paving stones, ruins and tunnels. The final destination of the trail just cannot be beaten: Machu Picchu, the mysterious "Lost City of the Incas".

In my haste to get some shots of shorebirds I almost stepped on this bird. He was playing along the shore of the pond with his buddies. I was only too happy to take a few shots. I love the detail in the feathers. Taken at the Riparian Preserve in Gilbert, AZ.
The Inca exhibit at the Musée d'Art et d'Histoire at the Cinquantenaire in Brussels is prolonged until the 21st of April.
The impressive display of ancient woven fabrics, feather capes, jewelry, masks, and more, offers insight into pre-Columbian cuture in Peru. You can even touch llama and alpaca wool as well as cotton plants, and make rubbings of Inca designs.

This batch of photos is for Elizabeth S. This is taken behind glass, of course, so the images are a bit soft. The Incas and their predecesors valued weaving above all things, including jewels and ceramics. It was a form of money for them. The rich showed off their wealth with textiles, of which most have perished over the centuries. Accountants kept track of good by elaborate knotting on strings called "quipos." The tag at the museum said this was preserved from rot by the extremely dry conditions on the west coast of Peru and the dry mountain air high in the Andes. I am struck by how similar this basket looks to one you might fund today in the home of any tailor, weaver or crochet practitioner.

These are 1200 year old incas that died from the fumes of the volcano eruption. Locals have made a shrine guarded by a puma who also suffered the same fate. Fags and beer looked to have been regularly brought for them as well as a bit of coin placed in their eyes for safe passage to the afterlife.
