First established in 1828, the gardens have been enjoyed as a public park by the people of Belfast since 1895. There is an extensive rose garden and long herbaceous borders and the tree enthusiast can seek out the rare oaks planted in the 1880s, including the hornbeam-leafed oak. Situated near Queens University Belfast, the Botanic Gardens is an important part of Belfast’s Victorian heritage and a popular meeting place for residents, students and tourists.

Charles McKimm came to the Royal Botanic Gardens in 1874, and was eventually appointed as Head Gardener. His enthusiasm caused many improvements to be made and the gardens were transformed. Belfast Corporation purchased the Gardens and renamed it as the Belfast Botanical Gardens Park. In 1903 McKimm was appointed to a newly created post of General Superintendent of Parks for Belfast.

Palm House history

Designed by Charles Lanyon, the Palm House is one of the earliest examples of a curvilinear cast iron glasshouse. Its construction was initiated by the Belfast Botanical and Horticultural Society in the 1830s. The two wings were completed in 1840, and were built by Richard Turner of Dublin, who later built the Great Palm House at Kew Gardens. The cool wing houses all year round displays of colour and scent using plants such as geranium, fuchsia, begonia and built displays. Construction of the Palm House began in 1839, and the Tropical Ravine, or Fernery, completed in 1889, is a fine example of horticultural Victoriana.

Tropical Ravine

The Tropical Ravine has had a £3.8m transformation and the listed building which dates back to 1887 has been restored with many of its original Victorian features reinstated and preserved. Split over two levels with an open reception area on the ground floor, the building has been modernised to make it more energy efficient with new triple-glazed windows installed to retain heat and create the right environment for the tropical plants it is home to. Visitors will now be able to learn about the conservation work and plant collection thanks to new interactive and digital exhibits. Accessibility has also been improved with the introduction of sensory facilities for sight and hearing-impaired visitors.

In the town of milton a flock of geese were shot just for living in the town. In memory of the geese a local woman made crosses for each goose and wrote a short poem about them.

The Poem says;

To Grey Goose

and Lilly, Crooked Neck, Uno

Peg Leg and the unamed ones.

living creatures turned into crosses.

Not whole, not perfect

But still part of god's domain.

Not part of the migrating flock

Outcasts, injured ones- Disabled

A flock unto themselves

Giving people a sense of the wild world

In a small town setting

People feeding

People helping

People protecting

Taken in Doughton Park in Sparta, NC on 6/28/12

Sigh. Another year, another trip, another sundown spent in Doughton Park. We picked a spot slightly beyond where we normally chill, and I sat beneath one of the three or four lonely trees with a good read. And all was right with the world.

I have more photos from my trip to post, but for now I'm excited to post some new things - especially some of the studio practice I've been able to get with my new friend/photographer/model Kay!

Arriving in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, at the Choeung Ek Genocidal Center – a site better known as the Killing Fields.

Its has tranquil paths, leading to a Memorial Stupa housing 8,000 human skulls from those killed by the Khmer Rouge,

You will also see many mass graves during your time at Choeung Ek (although 86 out of 129 have been uncovered so far) – one is home to 450 victims, while another is filled with the bodies of Khmer Rouge soldiers, those whom Pol Pot accused of having a “Cambodian body, but Vietnamese head.”

Today the graves are protected beneath open-air shelters and surrounded by bamboo fences – and on each and every fence post there are bracelets; brightly colored friendship bracelets, ones made from ribbons, and others that read Cambodia on their sides.

Thousands and thousands of bracelets will most likely move you the most.

Apparently they are an important part of Baci ceremonies, tied around a person’s wrist for good luck.

What else can you do but hope and pray and believe for healing and leave something, anything, behind you that says we were here, and that we remember?

Day 3

Last day in OC, woke up early to pack up, check out, grab some breakfast and get ready for the show. As soon as we got to our line up, you could immediately feel the heat coming down on us. Day 3 was the usual show day; clean the cars, walk around, hang out in the tent, and snapping pictures. As soon as our cars were judged, we all met up behind the show on the grass to do a mini photo shoot. When we got done, the winners were called and Tom got 3rd in our class. After that, we hung out for a little then headed to the Dogfish Head restaurant in Rehoboth. More traffic leaving OC and even more traffic trying to find parking for dinner. We were all in a rush to try to catch the last Ferry to Cape May. We just barely made it on to the Ferry but got on and was able to relax and get some rest before the drive back home. Traffic was insane on the Parkway and Expressway but made it back home around 1am. Not bad for a weekend trip...

Ninian Comper restored and furnished the interiors of three small East Anglian churches, and this is the least known of the three. The reredos is in poor condition now, and the screen was never gilded as planned. But the chancel furnishings are one of his best sets.

The church sits in a large village on the edge of the Battle Training Area. The restoration was paid for by the Lynne-Stephens family, who also bankrolled the fabulous Our Lady and the English Martyrs Catholic church in Cambridge.

This is one home in the residential section--one of the nicer ones. It's still so small though, only a few rooms. There were interesting things left behind on the sun porch and in the kitchen but the back bed room closet still had clothes and shoes in it! It was neat to explore.

You can clearly see the residential section of town in person and also on google earth--you can see the remnants of roads. There are homes left but all of them are in bad condition--beyond repair. They have interesting things inside though and all clearly were cared for homes at one time! It was fun walking through the residential section of town and seeing a bit of how it used to be, but it was also ghostly.

Exploring the ghost town of Mildred was...(some of you may laugh) one of the best experiences I have ever had. I had never been to a town with so much history and so many stories, that was all completely abandoned. Quiet. Just the wind blew by and the sun beat down. In every building there was a different story, a different bit of history and it came through so clearly you could practically see the ghosts of people walking around. I really can't put the experience into words, it was so overwhelming. So I hope the pictures and video speak for themselves.

This now ghost town was a stop on the Milwaukee road.

The post office was closed in 2005; the Mildred post office first opened in 1908.

Die Kirche St. Peter und Paul zu Bern steht in der Rathausgasse 2 in der Stadt - Altstadt Bern

im Berner Mittelland im Kanton Bern in der Schweiz.

.

.

.

Die Kirche Sankt Peter und Paul ist ein christkatholisches Kirchengebäude an der Rathaus-

gasse 2 in Bern.
