After a lovely relaxing Mother's Day, the girls and I went for a walk down the beach this evening..

I had brought my camera with me in the hopes that something would jump out at me as "in a row" for this weeks theme.. and if all else failed, I had plans for the railings on the promenade as a last resort..

And this is how I ended up with my last resort Promenade!

There was a lot of people still out walking and the ice cream shop on the Prom was buzzing with people, which all contributed to a lovely atmosphere, even at 9pm..

I was torn between this shot and the one posted in the comments below for my weekly shot.. but there was something about the activity going on in this shot that led me to choose this one.. It's very representative of this evening, the life, the buzz, the busyness of the promenade.. I love how not only the railings are lined up in a row, but the lights are too..

For 52 of 2014 "In a Row"

For the second day in a row a story in the Shreveport Times has prompted me to get out my digital paints.

I'm reading "Queen Victoria's Sketchbook" and thinking about why I'm making art. And the story links from the local newspaper tie right into this. In 30 days the Shreveport Times will deactivate today's link so if you Google Sherb Sentell at that time, the story will not come up and we will just forget this happened. But if I take this story, make a piece of art about it and make it available in print form or just let it hang out at my flickr account, folks will forever know the story. And we can't make changes if we are forever forgetting the stories and outcomes that need to be changed. That's what I'm thinking...

Thank you to Shreveport artist Debbie Hollis Buchanan Engle for telling me about this story debbiebuchananengle.blogspot.com/2010/07/louisianas-good-...

Sherb Sentell to return to district attorney's office

By Vickie Welborn

vwelborn@gannett.com

MINDEN — After a nine-month absence, attorney Sherb Sentell is returning to work with the Bossier-Webster district attorney's office.

Sentell will be assigned as a prosecutor in Minden City Court in mid-August. He'll work there at least four months, maybe longer, before being allowed to do felony work in Webster District Court, District Attorney Schuyler Marvin said.

"But he will not be in a management position, and he will not be the head of the office or anything like that as he previously served," Marvin said.

Sentell, who is also an officer in the U.S. Army Reserves, resigned in October a week after his arrest for domestic abuse battery and public intimidation. Sentell was accused of grabbing and pushing his wife during an incident at a Bossier City casino that was caught on surveillance cameras. Bossier City officers handcuffed and arrested him even though Sentell's wife, Julie, who was not injured, asked that he not be arrested. It was obvious from the tapes that Sentell had been drinking.

While in the patrol car, Sentell is videotaped in a profanity-laced rant in which he also dropped names of attorneys and elected officials. The officers said Sentell threatened their jobs. The officer and a reserve lost their jobs. However, the officer appealed and was later reinstated.

In January, the state attorney's office declined to prosecute Sentell, saying there was no merit to the charges. Julie Sentell also asked the attorney general's office not to prosecute. In a statement released days after her husband's arrest, Julie Sentell called the incident a "private disagreement between two married people."

"He got exonerated by military, the attorney general and the (Louisiana Bar Association). Everybody looked into it and he got a pass. He is a good prosecutor "» and I think the whole defense bar would agree to that and anybody who walks in the courthouse would agree to that," Marvin said, adding that he believes the embarrassment of having the entire incident recorded and viewed by the public is punishment enough. "He is a really good prosecutor, and I just don't think he needs to be punished anymore."

In city court, Sentell will be responsible for prosecuting misdemeanor state law crimes such as DWIs and marijuana cases. But he'll take on other work as needed.

Sentell had been employed with the district attorney's office 10 years before his resignation. He held the position of chief felony prosecutor.

Just made a piece of digital art about this whole situation and put it on my blog "Sherb Sentell III Grabbed and Pushed His Wife." kathrynusherart.blogspot.com/2010/07/sherb-sentell-iii-gr...

That's the great thing about art. Long after links to stories in newspapers die... art will still be around telling the story.

The ‘three Gauls’ had been among Rome’s most coveted possessions ever since the region was brought into the Roman fold in the 1st Century B.C. Not only was it a considerable source of income to the Roman state, but Gaul also served as a buffer against Germans living north of the Rhine. Rome’s investment in the region, financial and otherwise, was immense, yet its returns were greater still. Thus, when Nero’s callous treatment of the Gauls sparked a revolt under Vindex, the governor of Gallia Lugdunensis, it was no trifling affair. Legions were dispatched from Upper Germany with the utmost urgency, and they defeated the largely civilian army that Vindex had assembled in his hour of desperation. The death of Vindex was a double-edged sword for Galba, the governor of Hispania Tarraconensis, whose uprising had been encouraged and supported by the defeated Gauls. Suetonius (Galba 11) tells us that upon learning of Vindex’s defeat Galba thought his cause was lost and he considered taking his own life, only to be spared that fate once he learned of Nero’s suicide and of the decision by the senate and the people to support him as the next emperor. It is perhaps fair to suggest that had Vindex and the governor of Aquitania not beseeched Galba to rise up against Nero, it is unlikely he would have done it of his own accord. Thus, Galba owed a debt of gratitude to the Gauls for his being hailed emperor, and he repaid them by lowering their tribute to the government and by increasing their rights to Roman citizenship. With this denarius type Galba honours Gaul with one of the most distinctive of all Roman coin designs, which pairs an image of Galba on horseback with three busts representing the ‘three Gauls’ – Gallia Aquitania, Gallia Belgica and Gallia Lugdunensis. Together, they comprised most of Gallia transalpina, a region the Romans also called Gallia Comata (‘long-haired Gaul’) due to the comparatively wild appearance of its inhabitants. To the south of this region was Gallia Narbonensis, which skirted the Mediterreanan coast from the Pyrenees to the Alps. As Rome’s gateway to Spain, this area had been pacified earlier than the Celtic regions to the north. Pliny praised this part of Gaul for its wealth and civilization, going so far as to describe it as ”...second to no other province, it is, in fact, not a province at all, it is Italy.” Closer still to Rome was Gallia Cisalpina (Gallia Togata), which comprised northern Italy. Originally this region was divided into Gallia Transpadane and Gallia Cispadane, provinces separated at the River Po. The two, however, were united into one province before the region was incorporated into Italy.

For the second year in a row, student-artists at Central Academy have created the official Iowa State Fair collectible pottery. Students in Dara Green’s pottery class produced 500 trays to be sold during this year’s state fair. The work raises funds for the Central Academy pottery program as well as the state fair's Blue Ribbon Foundation.

Round 6 of the CHNL saw a depleted Hepburn take on Creswick. For the 2nd week in a row the Burra’s were forced to line up with 2 players out injured. Confident in their squad, the competition leaders tried various line ups throughout the game until they quickly settled. Captain Libby Purtell at Goal Attack was instrumental in providing Hepburn with plenty of options in attack. Purtell maintained her 100% accuracy throughout the first half and was supported brilliantly by sharp shooter Jane Lienhop at Goal Shooter.

Creswick managed to keep the mid-court battle alive by providing sharp drives to the circle; however the Burra’s defensive pressure in the circle from Ebony Place saw the ball turned over time and time again. The junior of Hepburn’s team,18 year old Tara Ford clocked up her 150th game for the club in great style at Goal Defence. Ford seems to be taking every opportunity in seniors to develop her game with the help of Place at Goal Keeper. However it was wing attack Brydie Taig that stood up to the challenge and lifted the Burra’s confidence. Taig was named Hepburn’s best on court thanks to her speed and sharp feeding into the circle. Hepburn ran out winners 53 to 17.

The Mo Shepherd award went to Hannah Cameron-Taylor and Libby Purtell for outstanding work.

Hepburn’s reserves were also focussed on keeping their unbeaten run to the finals alive. The Burras got off to a shaky start as they tried to adjust to Creswick’s style. Moving Janee Brown into Centre in the second quarter was all it took to lift the Burras confidence and provide a 24 to 9 lead at half time.

Courtney Wetzel at Goal Defence, Kristi Pedretti at Goal Keeper and Caitlan Ryan at Wing Defence stepped up in the second half and kept Creswick scoreless until the final minutes of the game. Wetzel provided one of her best games of netball this year getting her hands on ever pass that came her way. Final scores Hepburn 53 to 13.

The Mo Shepherd award went to Caitlan Ryan and Janee Brown

Goals: Mel Penny 75% 41/55, Tania Grant 92% 12/13

Long after the talks and dinner and "official" drinks ended we headed to the karaoke dive that is literally on the other (er, wrong?) side of the tracks in this little manufactured Microsoft town. Third year in a row = official SCS tradition? (Much fun, btw)

This red brick structure in Charlotte Court House, Virginia dates from about 1825. It presumably began as a tavern then became a store for general merchandise and an office building. It is in a state of disrepair but is slated for preservation by the APVA. The pedimented front gable is a classic feature of Federal-style architecture. The facade is Flemish Bond and the sides are 5-course American bond. Old photographs show that the structure once had a portico with two tall columns; however, when the street was widened in 1954, the portico became a casualty. A single window is above the Federal-style entrance. Two 6/6 windows presently flank the entry, but in a 1928 photo shows that the building had two 9-light store windows. Tucker's Store gained the name after the owners and operators of a mercantile store at this location. The building is one of 4 brick buildings in a row built in similar style.

This building is part of the Charlotte Court House Historic District (Virginia Dept. of Historic Resources ID: 185-0023; the building's ID is 185-23-480. The entire district was placed on the Natrion Register of Historic Places 8 Feb 1995. NHRP #95000023.

The desire to fly is an idea handed down to us by our ancestors who, in their grueling travels across trackless lands in prehistoric times, looked enviously on the birds soaring freely through space, at full speed, above all obstacles, on the infinite highway of the air.

After three days in a row of winds that exceeding the maximum limits and caused one or both of the races to be cancelled each day, this afternoon was the complete opposite. Emirates Team New Zealand seemed to have the first race won, expect for one small problem...they weren't going fast enough. One of the rules is that the course has to be completed within a 40 minute time limit. After hitting the final mark and leading by 1,600 meters, and with just scant meters to go to secure the win, the race was abandoned as the clock hit the 40:00 point. Much to the dismay of Kiwis around the world, Oracle Team USA won the second race...one more day for the Cup on American soil.

I wasn't in Asia (again for the 5th year in a row) to celebrate Chinese New Year with my family but I did manage to celebrate with my friends and check out the parade down at Chinatown in NYC on Sunday. In the crazy crowd of people, I turned and saw this adorable child in costume, it was great, ≤ pretty sure that he wasn't too happy about it, made a great photo though. I didn't quite that as many shots as I usually do at parades because I was on a tighter schedule and there was a ton of people in the super tiny space. There were moments where I really felt like I couldn't breathe and wanted to punch a baby (figure of speech), there were also some crazy Asian grannies and gramps that decided to do their grocery shopping that day with their not-so-awesome huge shopping cart, which made everything so much harder, not cool. Overall though? It was a sweet weekend, seeing all my good friends and meeting new ones. Hope that for the rest of the dragon year to come. Cheers y'all.
