Cliffs at Auchmithie Beach

The historic Grain Belt Brewery in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

Imposing Bevis Tower looms large in the foreground, its sturdy 14th century walls and crenellations guarding the passage to the heart of Arundel Castle - across its stout bridge can be glimpsed a portal admitting visitors into the storied demesne defended by these very bulwarks for centuries untold.

... seen from a different perspective, up from the river embankment. Form this perspectife the signature main tower is not visible.

But looking at the imposing walls one can imagine, how fearsome a fortress it mas have been in its times.

Imposing funeral architecture at the churchyard of St. Mary's, Redbourn, Hertfordshire. The outdoor sarcophagus used to be the next best thing if you could not get an impressive monument inside the church. Some people, perhaps the surviving relatives rather, wished the deceased person to be seen and acknowledged beyond death. I am not worried by this. The quest for immortality is at least as old as the history of literacy. Necropoles and the whole gamut of funeral architecture pops up in human history with the arrival of agriculture-based political units. But not before.

Taken in December 2023

20th June 2024. Built between 1925 and 1935, it was then the most expensive building in the world. It remains a significant London landmark, with its imposing Portland stone exterior and a palatial interior of inlaid marble floors and travertine walls.

The Kvanefjord (“place with lots of ice”) is almost 50 km long near Sermersooq. It branches into three arms at the end, each of which ends at imposing glaciers.

For example the Nigerlikasik Bræ, an ice river at 328m.

The imposing statue of Il Gigante stands against the rugged cliffs of Monterosso al Mare, overlooking the restless Ligurian waves. Carved into the rock, the giant appears to shoulder the weight of the sea and sky, a timeless sentinel of Cinque Terre’s coastline.

Believe to or not this imposing looking station building only dates back to 1956. The first railways came to Yerevan in 1902 but it was the Soviets who made the statement and rebuilt this station. in 2010 the station buildings received an overhaul but on my visit very few services made use of the three platform station.

Interestingly the Russian state owned company Russian Railways entered into a 30 year lease in 2008 to operate all railways in Armenia. As a result this latest station renovation and the service I travelled on were carried out and operated by the Russian government.

I arrived here in the early morning on the sleeper train from Tbilisi, Georgia so at this point my camera will have been tucked away in my rucksack and this was therefore an iPhone photo. Like many stations of this region this one was tucked away a mile or so out of town so having run the gauntlet of the waiting taxi drivers I set off towards the city centre and my search for Wi-Fi so that I could make plans for a car hire and accommodation for the night.

This imposing bridge highlights the engeneering skills required to build the Great Northern railway from 1878-91, when the line reached Oodnadatta. the Algebuckina bridge, which cost 60000 Pound, spans the neales River and was officially opened for traffic from January 8 1892.

Made up of nineteen 30.9 metre spans it is the largest single bridge in South Australia. The bridge was strengthened in 1926 to carry heavier rail traffic. It is on the Register of the National estate and on the State Heritage Register.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861 – 1941) is best known as a poet a bengali( Indian), and in 1913 was the first non-European writer to be awarded the Nobel Prize for a notable work of poetry called Gitanjali: Song Offerings (Macmillan, 1912), for which he received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1913.. He was a school dropout as he felt stifled within the classroom and found himself unable to think and felt claustrophobic within the four walls of a classroom."

Rabindranath Tagore toured Java in the year 1927 accompanied by eminent architect Surendra Nath Kar. Later, when Tagore decided to establish another house at 'Uttarayan' complex, Surendra Nath applied the architectural form of Java on that house and Tagore's son Rathindra Nath took the whole charge of construction of that house. Japanese artist Kono Shuson decorated this house. Tagore named it "UDAYAN". The construction work went till the year 1938.

Udayan is the most imposing house in the Uttarayan complex. It is meant for important guests visiting Santiniketan. Each suite in Udayan is on a different level which gives this house its individuality. In 2013, Visva Bharati opened a museum Guha Ghar, in the Uttarayan complex, in memory of Rathindranath Tagore.

An imposing 13th-15th Century structure and one of the largest castles in Ireland, Cahir Castle was skillfully designed by Conor O’Brien to be a state-of-the-art defensive castle. Appearing to grow from the actual rock on which it stands, the castle has been the scene of sieges and bombardments for centuries.

The powerful Anglo-Norman family, the Butlers, came into the possession of the castle in 1375. The castle was captured three times in its history: it fell to Devereux, Earl of Essex, in 1599 after it had been battered for three days with artillery. It surrendered without a fight to Inchiquin in 1647, and again to Cromwell in 1650.

Over the centuries the Butlers considerably rebuilt and extended their stronghold. However, by 1599, the castle had reached its present appearance, with the only subsequent alterations taking place in the 1840s.

In 1961, the last Lord Cahir died and the castle reverted to the State. The castle retains its impressive keep, tower and much of its original defensive structure. In 1981 it was used as a location for a battle scene in the film Excalibur. Today the castle is a tourist attraction and features an excellent audio-visual show which informs visitors about its eventful history.

Cahir is a lovely little town to visit, quaint friendly and of course some excellent pubs and restaurants. :-)

The imposing east neo-Gothic tower of the Derwent Dam with the overflow cascading from the reservoir beyond. Completed in 1912 this reservoir was the location that the RAF 617 Squadron - or The Dambusters - used to practice their techniques prior to using their bouncing bombs on the Ruhr dams of Germany.

Alpe Veglia. Varzo, Italy.

The imposing north-east face of Monte Leone.

This mountain, rising along the border between Italy and Wallis, Switzerland, has an outstanding prominence on almost all of its sides. Its southern flank is visible even from the distant plane of Pianura Padana, in Italy. This face, instead, is surrounded by a notable chain of mountains, and it is visible only from the ridge delimiting at North the beautiful cirque of alpe Veglia.

This photo has been taken at the end of the trail to Forca D'aurona, Furggubaumlicke, on of the few passes that can be used to cross that same, rugged, ridge.

The valley at the feet of the mountain was once covered by the Aurona glacier, which is almost desappeared. You can see here the morain left by the vanished ice.

The name of Mont Leone, Lion in english, comes from one of the many misunderstandings that fulfill the old maps of my Country. Originally the mountain was probably known as Monte Aione, from the name of a small settlement located amid the green meadows of Alpe veglia, then somebody changed Aione into Leone. On the other hand, you cannot help but think that the long top ridge reminds of the back and the head of a giant Lion. Curiously, the name of the mountain is Leone also on the maps of Switzerland, where, usually, every mountain peak is indicated by a German name.

The normal route to the summit runs beyond the long top ridge, on a vast iced, hanging plane. It is a great route for ski mountaineering.

First sunday of autumn, and it rains hard... you cannot drive and you spend some time watching old photos of better times.

The imposing Shigatse Dzong was built in the 17th century as a smaller prototype of the Potala in Lhasa, and had turret-like fortifications at the ends and a central Red Palace. In the 17th century, the Mongols (by Gusri Khan in 1642) supported the Fifth Dalai Lama and defeated Prince Tsang at Shigatse. After this event, the Tashilhunpo Monastery came under the control of the Yellow Hat sect. The rivalry between the Sakya and the Gelukpa orders is traced to this event; the Geukpa sect of the Dala Lama controlled from Central Tibet and the Panchen Lama controlled from Shigatse.

Shigatse was previously the seat of the kings of Ü-Tsang and the capital of the province of Ü-Tsang or Tsang. It was sacked when the Gurkhas invaded Tibet and captured Shigatse in 1791 before a combined Tibetan and Chinese army drove the Gurkhas back as far as the outskirts of Kathmandu. The Gurkhas were forced to agree to keep the peace in future, pay tribute every five years, and return what they had looted from Tashilhunpo.

Shigatse was also the traditional seat of the Panchen Lamas. Until the Chinese arrived in the 1950s, the "Tashi" or Panchen Lama wielded temporal power over three small districts, though not over the town of Shigatse itself, which was administered by a dzongpön (general) appointed from Lhasa.

This imposing structure on Great George Street was built in 1878 as the headquarters of the Leeds School Board, formed in response to the Elementary Education Act of 1870, which made schooling compulsory for children aged 5 to 13. Designed by George Corson in a grand Renaissance style, the building reflected the Victorian belief in education as a pillar of civic progress. From here, the Board administered the growing network of schools across Leeds, overseeing the education of thousands during a time of dramatic social change.

As our 'ball' of gas rises above the horizon, illuminating the rugged features around my position, as well as deeper into the valley below, I'm once again struck by the beauty of this wild place in western North Carolina. Always different, always the same on each visit at different times of day and during the various seasons. I love the different textures of the rocks, different species of trees and vegetation. The constantly changing light, which can be altered just by moving a few feet in any direction. One of many spot I hope to visit again and again during 2016...
