Schloss Brake near Lemgo is a castle built in the style of the Weserrenaissance. We used the second advent weekend for a visit to attend an interesting exhibition about historic maps and navigation.

The imposing Festung Hohensalzburg (Salzburg Castle) sits above the city of Salzburg (Austria). The building of this castle commenced in 1077 and continued, in some form or other, until the 16th Century.

Under the imposing cut of the Cobacherizas pass, December begins after a benign autumn. The first snows fall while the trees barely maintain their golden leaves. And at that moment, you can only feel small, be amazed and thank Nature for that gift.

The Cristal peak is the sixth highest peak in Brazil, with 2,769.05 meters of altitude, according to the measurement made by the IBGE and the Military Institute of Engineering, through the Pontos Culminantes do Brasil Project, and revised by the IBGE through a new mapping of the geoid of the Brazilian territory in 2016.

It is located in the Serra do Caparaó, within the Caparaó National Park, in the municipality of Alto Caparaó, State of Minas Gerais, at 20º 26' 37" south latitude and 41º 48' 42" west longitude. A measurement on Google Earth shows the border of Espírito Santo just 930 meters east of Pico do Cristal, and Pico da Bandeira, the third highest mountain in Brazil and the highest in the Southeast Region, at 1,940 meters to the northeast. The two peaks are visible from each other.

Pico do Cristal is the highest mountain located entirely within the territory of Minas Gerais, as the other highest peaks in the state are on the border with Espírito Santo (Pico da Bandeira), São Paulo (Pedra da Mina) or Rio de Janeiro. January (Agulhas Negras peak).

Until recently, the peak of Cristal was considered the fourth highest mountain in Brazil, with 2,798 meters. Later, another measurement pointed to the summit of the peak at 2,780 meters. More recently, within the scope of the Pontos Culminantes do Brasil Project, where more precise technology was used, the IBGE confirmed the summit of the peak at 2,769.76 meters, which places Pico do Cristal as the sixth highest mountain in the country. In 2016, the IBGE revised the altitudes of the highest points in Brazil, based on the geoid mapping of the Brazilian territory, and confirmed the altitude of Pico do Cristal as being 2,769.05 meters.

The peak of Cristal is a massive point that has this denomination due to its abundant rock formations of quartz, in which it presents landscapes of extreme beauty, being considered by some the most impressive place than the peak of the Flag, where the vegetation is formed basically by bromeliads and lilies on rocky outcrops, the site being part of the highest altitude zone of the park.

For those departing from the Tronqueira campsite, in Minas Gerais, the trail goes up towards Pico da Bandeira, where, close to this, you head south to Pico do Calçado and then west.

For those coming from the Casa Queimada side, you can reach Pico do Cristal by going up the trail to Pico da Bandeira and heading east before climbing Pico do Calçado. From its summit, it is possible to see the imposing Pico da Bandeira, with its characteristic abyss on the Espírito Santo side and softer slopes on the Minas Gerais side.

Entering the imposing front door to the magnificent Great Hall, visitors step back in time and see the Doric columns of a Roman Basilica, which realised Adam’s instruction to create ‘a palace of Graeco-Roman splendour’.

The decorative stucco work and great beams of the ceiling reflect the pattern of the black and white marble floor. Statues of Roman nobles gaze down from their pedestals and the hall’s focal piece, a replica of Valadier’s bronze ‘The Dying Gaul’, commissioned by the 1st Duchess of Northumberland, holds pride of place at the top of elegant steps leading to the Ante Room.

The imposing appearance against the stormy background suggests that this is the weather god. I know that among the Germanic tribes his name was Thor. But here in Italy, with the Romans? I read in Wikipedia that the Romans believed in the Syrian weather god Iupiter Dolichenus. After they took the city of Doliche, their supreme deity, Jupiter, inherited the office of weather god. As if he didn't have enough on his plate already! In Christianity, Peter holds something like the office of weather god. When I took a picture of Peter?

Hope the name doesn't say it all: one of the most beautiful high valleys is the Verpeil Valley in the Kaunertal. The starting point is the Verpeilhütte, from this imposing backdrop you head towards the Verpeilspitze (approx. 3,400m), for example.

I last shot this tree back in November when it was resplendent in its autumn colour, now here we are in June and it still forms an impressive and imposing presence in green. Always a strange feeling when you walk under it knowing that weight is above you!!

This charter boat sits bobbing on the calm waters of Coles Bay, as mist rises from the water. But that bank of clouds is the real attraction here backed by that golden glow of light.

The water temperature is about 12 degrees Celsius, and the air temperature hovers just above zero. Anyone for a warm swim?

Perhaps s/he doesn't look that way here, but anyone who's ever been close to an Eastern Kingbird knows they have a big and unmistakable presence.

The spoonbill conversation continued a few minutes later.

"Who?"

"That persistent Greater Canon nosed happy snapper!"

"Oh yes, I can even hear it now."

"What a funny call it has.....sort of a quiet bebeep..... click, click, click, click click!"

"I think it only seems to call when you stick your feathers up you know."

"Okay, let's give it something to get noisy about!"

"Mount Rainier is ranked third of the 128 ultra-prominent mountain peaks of the United States. Denali and Mauna Kea are taller from their base. Mount Rainier has a topographic prominence of 13,210 ft (4,026 m), which is greater than that of K2, the world's second-tallest mountain, at 13,189 ft (4,020 m). With 26 major glaciers and 36 sq mi (93 km2) of permanent snowfields and glaciers, Mount Rainier is the most heavily glaciated peak in the lower 48 states." Wiki

The Sesto Sundial is an imposing natural monument: it is made up of five peaks which are all located in the municipality of Sesto and ... They tell the hour! It is a real natural clock and the course of the sun gives its name to the mountains on which it falls at the exact time: Top Nine, Top Ten, Top Eleven, Top twelve and Top One.

According to some theories, the name Sesto derives precisely from "Sexta ora" which in antiquity - during the Roman period - corresponded to noon: the rhythms and hours of the days were completely marked by the sun, from the moment in which it arose exactly when it was setting, and from dawn to what is midday for us exactly six hours passed.

The Sesto sundial is located near the Tre Cime di Lavaredo Natural Park. The right place for seen the hour is only from the Sesto Valley. They are the flagship of this heart of the Dolomites, so much so as to be considered its symbol. From the Bagni di Moso location you can enjoy the best position to see the sun's rays perfectly touching the mountain tops at the appointed time, except for 9 am and 10am when the light is covered by the mountains themselves.

Characteristic for the Top Nine (2,582 m), the lowest of the Sesto sundial, are the sedimentation layers which are also visible from afar. The Top Ten also called Croda Rossa (2,965 m), it is the pillar east of Sesto and was ascended for the first time by Michel Innerkofler and Roland von Eötvös in 1878.

The Elfer is reserved for experienced climbers can scale these 3,086-meter mountain, and you can find historical artifacts that date back to World War II. The Top Twelve is 2,917 meters high and is located near the Three Peaks, magical place for lovers of hiking and climbing. The Cima Una instead became famous in the world after 2007, the year in which a part of it collapsed covering the Val Fiscalina with dust and it is said that this place called "Heidegg" was originally inhabited or a place of worship frequented by pilgrims and believers .

Sleek and imposing, this jet served the U.S. Air Force from 1954 to 1971. It was the first USAF fighter capable of supersonic speed in level flight. I love the design and the look of that oval air intake on the jet's nose!

I rarely photograph airshows, but 7 years ago I had the opportunity to spend a day at the 2015 EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Nice people, beautiful planes, well-organized!
