Schloss Brake near Lemgo is a castle built in the style of the Weserrenaissance. We used the second advent weekend for a visit to attend an interesting exhibition about historic maps and navigation.
The imposing 1,700-metre-high rock walls of the Cirque de Gavarnie are surrounded by several giants over 3,000 metres high. This natural wonder at the French-Spanish border, is also home to the Gavarnie Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe, with an impressive drop of 422 metres.
The imposing Festung Hohensalzburg (Salzburg Castle) sits above the city of Salzburg (Austria). The building of this castle commenced in 1077 and continued, in some form or other, until the 16th Century.

Under the imposing cut of the Cobacherizas pass, December begins after a benign autumn. The first snows fall while the trees barely maintain their golden leaves. And at that moment, you can only feel small, be amazed and thank Nature for that gift.

Entering the imposing front door to the magnificent Great Hall, visitors step back in time and see the Doric columns of a Roman Basilica, which realised Adam’s instruction to create ‘a palace of Graeco-Roman splendour’.
The decorative stucco work and great beams of the ceiling reflect the pattern of the black and white marble floor. Statues of Roman nobles gaze down from their pedestals and the hall’s focal piece, a replica of Valadier’s bronze ‘The Dying Gaul’, commissioned by the 1st Duchess of Northumberland, holds pride of place at the top of elegant steps leading to the Ante Room.
The imposing appearance against the stormy background suggests that this is the weather god. I know that among the Germanic tribes his name was Thor. But here in Italy, with the Romans? I read in Wikipedia that the Romans believed in the Syrian weather god Iupiter Dolichenus. After they took the city of Doliche, their supreme deity, Jupiter, inherited the office of weather god. As if he didn't have enough on his plate already! In Christianity, Peter holds something like the office of weather god. When I took a picture of Peter?

The imposing Liberation Hall was commissioned by King Louis I to commemorate the battles fought against Napoleon during the Wars of Liberation and was completed in 1863. The impressive rotunda has a height of 45 and a diameter of 29 m and is illuminated in the interior by a glass dome.
A stark and imposing medieval fortress at the entrance to Wensleydale, begun by Richard le Scrope in 1378. Scrope was Lord Treasurer and Lord Chancellor to Richard II, and one of the most powerful men in late 14th century England. His new castle was intended to be a symbol of that power, and one look at the sturdy stone walls will tell you he succeeded.

I last shot this tree back in November when it was resplendent in its autumn colour, now here we are in June and it still forms an impressive and imposing presence in green. Always a strange feeling when you walk under it knowing that weight is above you!!

The Victory Tower or Vijaya Stambha is an imposing victory monument located within Chittor Fort in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, India. The tower was constructed by the Hindu Rajput king Rana Kumbha of Mewar in 1448 to commemorate his victory over the army of Malwa led by Mahmud Khalji in the Battle of Sarangpur. The tower is dedicated to Hindu God Vishnu. This Fort is on a Mountain.

Shot with the Olympus E-M1 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. I dig all aspects of this amazing, creative museum of art. Even the non-intentionally artsy elements, such as this lone person standing in the imposing, brick-lined passageways, have artistic merit to me. I was fascinated by how alone, small and insiginificant he appeared as if this was an illusion.

This charter boat sits bobbing on the calm waters of Coles Bay, as mist rises from the water. But that bank of clouds is the real attraction here backed by that golden glow of light.
The water temperature is about 12 degrees Celsius, and the air temperature hovers just above zero. Anyone for a warm swim?
The Milan Cathedral is after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome the second largest Church in Italy and the third largest worldwide. The building of the really imposing structure started in 1386. The dedication was in 1572.

Fresh from the ovens at Fairlane, the water bath and temps hovering around -10 have created a blinding wall of steam that has overtaken Highway 7. Heading for Proctor and eventually the docks at Duluth, U717 will steam the whole way there, though not nearly as impressive as this.

The imposing mile-and-a-half long sheet of ice known as Explorer Glacier peers out from its vantage 2200 feet above in the Kenai Mountains, staying largely inconspicuous due to the obscurity of dense fog on a gloomy Alaskan summer day. Far below, all 6 headlights illuminate the way for the engineer gazing out the L glass of his Alaska original GP40-2 still wearing its factory 1970s black and yellow colors, skirting the marshes and ponds along Turnagain Arm with train 120N en route to the state capital of Anchorage. In tow are goods fresh off the rail barge connecting Alaska at the port of Whittier with the Lower 48, manifest including just about anything and everything from containerized cargo to trucks, steel products, and carload traffic.

The Sesto Sundial is an imposing natural monument: it is made up of five peaks which are all located in the municipality of Sesto and ... They tell the hour! It is a real natural clock and the course of the sun gives its name to the mountains on which it falls at the exact time: Top Nine, Top Ten, Top Eleven, Top twelve and Top One.
According to some theories, the name Sesto derives precisely from "Sexta ora" which in antiquity - during the Roman period - corresponded to noon: the rhythms and hours of the days were completely marked by the sun, from the moment in which it arose exactly when it was setting, and from dawn to what is midday for us exactly six hours passed.
The Sesto sundial is located near the Tre Cime di Lavaredo Natural Park. The right place for seen the hour is only from the Sesto Valley. They are the flagship of this heart of the Dolomites, so much so as to be considered its symbol. From the Bagni di Moso location you can enjoy the best position to see the sun's rays perfectly touching the mountain tops at the appointed time, except for 9 am and 10am when the light is covered by the mountains themselves.
Characteristic for the Top Nine (2,582 m), the lowest of the Sesto sundial, are the sedimentation layers which are also visible from afar. The Top Ten also called Croda Rossa (2,965 m), it is the pillar east of Sesto and was ascended for the first time by Michel Innerkofler and Roland von Eötvös in 1878.
The Elfer is reserved for experienced climbers can scale these 3,086-meter mountain, and you can find historical artifacts that date back to World War II. The Top Twelve is 2,917 meters high and is located near the Three Peaks, magical place for lovers of hiking and climbing. The Cima Una instead became famous in the world after 2007, the year in which a part of it collapsed covering the Val Fiscalina with dust and it is said that this place called "Heidegg" was originally inhabited or a place of worship frequented by pilgrims and believers .

Belgio, Fiandre Orientali, Gand, Primavera 2015
Ghent is a city located in Belgium and it is the capital of the East Flanders province. Ghent is a city of history. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the richest and most powerful cities in Europe. It was once considered the second largest city north of the alps, after Paris. The impact of this rich past can be clearly seen when viewing the imposing architecture of churches and the houses of rich traders. The whole of the city center is restored in this fashion, and still breathes the atmosphere of a thriving late-medieval city state. As the city council made the center free of cars, it is now a very welcoming and open area, which does not fail to impress even the people who live there.
Somewhat hidden, in a less spectacular side valley of the Moselle, and on an even less spectacular, almost boring hiking trail, you reach Eltz Castle, which is enthroned on a 70-metre-high rock. Its imposing appearance is due on the one hand to this, and on the other hand to its eight residential towers, up to 35 metres high, which make it stand out clearly from its surroundings. This truly impressive overall picture gives the feeling that one has arrived in the Middle Ages through teleportation.
This imposing wall surrounds Old San Juan thwarting pirates and foreign invaders for hundreds of years including the English , Dutch and Americans.
Harsh evening sunlight but such a pretty sight to see.
Thank you all for your kind comments and favs. :-)
Castillo de Medinaceli (Soria, Spain). It could be any castle perched on the night waiting for some unlikely enemy. I've always loved its imposing simplicity. Allegedlyأبو عامر محمد بن أبي عامر ابن عبد الله المعافري (Abu ʿAmir Muhammad ben Abi ʿAmir al-Maʿafirí or "Almanzor" in Spanish) died here. Once Almanzar was over, the Cordoba's Califate went down pretty fast and the Northern kingdoms (mostly Christians, with Muslim affiliates) advanced South quickly.

Mâcon had lost its large cathedral during the French Revolution and had no large church since.
So, in the 19th century, the city thought of building a new church. This is how, according to the plans of the architect Berthier, a pupil of Viollet de Duc, the Saint-Peter church was built in the 1860s.
The Romanesque style building has a three-storey facade. Three semicircular raised portals (characteristic of the monument, which are found in all the arcades, bays and openings) with eardrums decorated with stone bas-reliefs, give access to the interior. Dominated by two bell towers of rare elegance, topped with a stone spire, the whole is remarkable.
It also has imposing dimensions: the towers culminate at 53 m (174 ft) high and can be seen from everywhere in the city. The church is 75 m (246 ft) long, 30 m (98 ft) wide, and reaches 18 m (59 ft) at the keystone
