An imposing ruin with a long and romantic history Barden Tower was one of six hunting lodges and the principle seat of administration for Barden hunting forest. Henry Clifford, the Shepherd Lord, rebuilt the hunting lodge in the late 15th century and made it his principle residence. In 1515 he built the Priest House next to the chapel.

This once imposing willow, which could even be seen in Google Earth, had barely survived last summer and winter, see www.flickr.com/photos/cammino/47264258192/in/dateposted/. It was therefore treated by experts, and fortunately it is sprouting again. Let's hope that the tree treatment was successful and that this imposing tree was saved. The photo was taken in the nature reserve "Schlossbergsattel" nearby Markt Einersheim/Germany.

This was the site of one of the earliest Roman forts in Britain in 43AD built to protect against Saxon Raids. It later became the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery and later the church in 669AD whose remains you see here. The Towers were added as part of a reconstruction in the 12th Century.

Reculver is situated near Herne Bay in Kent, England.

A bit further we reached this farm, the Börsighof. It has an imposing roof, of the kind you see more often in the Black Forest. These roofs are the best for the places where the farms are situated: often against a slope, where winds can be strong. In the Black Forest there can (or could?) be heavy snowfall during winter as well.

This is the view from the back (and the side) of the house.

In front of this imposing basalt wall we feel small in the face of nature's grandeur. Lómagnúpur stands like a guardian of time, a silent witness to the Ice Ages and Nordic legends.

Here, between the wind echoing off the cliffs and the green embracing the rock, Iceland shows its wildest and most timeless side. It's a landscape to be contemplated not only with your eyes, but with your soul.

The derelict old tower we saw yesterday is quite imposing close up. It has been standing abandoned for many years, but will soon be demolished as a new industrial estate is established.

The slopes of Mount Meeker (left) and Mount Lady Washington (right) glow warmly in the winter morning sun as the upper-most reaches of Longs Peak and The Diamond are just illuminated (center), Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado.

Longs Peak is the tallest mountain in the Colorado Front Range, and the closest mountain over 14,000 feet to the population of Denver, Boulder, and Fort Collins. Being within the borders of Rocky Mountain National Park, Longs Peak is also the destination for many people flying into Colorado from parts elsewhere in order to have a go at summiting one of the most accessible and tallest mountains in the lower 48 states. The easiest route to the summit is a Class 3 scramble called The Keyhole route, and is steep, narrow, and exposed in parts. The views are spectacular no matter which way a person ascends, but the The Keyhole route can be very crowded, even on a late-summer Monday.

From this distance though, all human foibles are invisible and the massif simply appears imposing, glacier-carved, and magnificent.

The imposing twin towers of the medieval church at Reculver dominates the skyline of Herne Bay, acting as a navigation marker for ships at sea. This was the site of one of the earliest Roman forts built against Saxon raids on the 'Saxon Shore'. It later became the site of an Anglo-Saxon monastery before becoming the parish church for Reculver. The tall towers were built in a remodelling of the church in the 12th century.

Much of the site has been lost to coastal erosion, but alongside the twin towers are the ruined remains of an early Roman fort.

Imposing Jacobean mansion and purported birthplace of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of Henry the Eighth. Originally Tudor, the present house was built by Sir Henry Hobart (1560-1626) on purchasing the estate in 1616. The architect was Robert Lyminge, who designed Hatfield House.

Legend has it that the headless ghost of Anne Boleyn haunts the estate every year on the anniversary of her execution on May 18th.

An Anatolian Shepherd Dog is a rugged, imposing flock guardian of ancient lineage. Protective and territorial, but also intelligent, patient, and profoundly loyal, these muscular avengers are prized as working guard dogs without equal. The Anatolian Shepherd Dog stands between 27 and 29 inches at the shoulder and can weigh as much as 150 pounds. Profusely muscled but nimble afoot, Anatolians are more than a match for the predators and harsh terrain of their homeland. Anatolians descend from some of the oldest known domestic-canine bloodlines. This lends the breed a sense of timelessness, a no-frills, untouched quality that takes us back 6,000 years to the Bronze Age. Anatolians are smart, devoted, responsive, and adaptable. They will protect their flock, livestock, children, smaller dogs, even the family cat with intensity. Anatolian owners must be strong leaders, willing and able to handle a dog as dominating and demanding as he is calm and loving.

The dog (Canis familiaris when considered a distinct species or Canis lupus familiaris when considered a subspecies of the wolf) is a domesticated carnivore of the family Canidae. It is part of the wolf-like canids, and is the most widely abundant terrestrial carnivore. The dog and the extant gray wolf are sister taxa as modern wolves are not closely related to the wolves that were first domesticated, which implies that the direct ancestor of the dog is extinct. The dog was the first species to be domesticated, and has been selectively bred over millennia for various behaviors, sensory capabilities, and physical attributes. Their long association with humans has led dogs to be uniquely attuned to human behavior and they are able to thrive on a starch-rich diet that would be inadequate for other canids. Dogs vary widely in shape, size and colors. They perform many roles for humans, such as hunting, herding, pulling loads, protection, assisting police and military, companionship and, more recently, aiding disabled people and therapeutic roles. This influence on human society has given them the sobriquet of man's best friend. 36470

Imposing Bevis Tower looms large in the foreground, its sturdy 14th century walls and crenellations guarding the passage to the heart of Arundel Castle - across its stout bridge can be glimpsed a portal admitting visitors into the storied demesne defended by these very bulwarks for centuries untold.

This 9 meter lighthouse was built in 1930, is not the prettiest or imposing of lighthouses, but, it is a unique design and is now a protected structure. In the past it fell in to disrepair and the 2 tonne bell was removed for fear of it's weight pulling the structure down. The bell became lost until two ladies found it covered in rags in a warehouse. It is now on display in the town.

Still working, but the bell is replaced with an electronic siren, the white light, mounted on the square gallery at the top of the tower gives 3 quick Flashes every 10 seconds and is visible for 16 nautical miles.

Imposing funeral architecture at the churchyard of St. Mary's, Redbourn, Hertfordshire. The outdoor sarcophagus used to be the next best thing if you could not get an impressive monument inside the church. Some people, perhaps the surviving relatives rather, wished the deceased person to be seen and acknowledged beyond death. I am not worried by this. The quest for immortality is at least as old as the history of literacy. Necropoles and the whole gamut of funeral architecture pops up in human history with the arrival of agriculture-based political units. But not before.
