On February 12, 2020, USC IIGH hosted Joel Lamstein, president and co-founder of John Snow Inc. (JSI), for a talk titled “Issues to consider in implementing global health programs”.
Good research and policy analysis is taught to students and undertaken by universities and “think tanks,” but far less emphasis has been placed on how this research and policy gets translated successfully into action on the ground. The lecture will shed light on the issues that make implementation difficult, what it takes for interventions to be successful, and the role of good management and accountability structures to make this happen.

Joel Lamstein co-founded John Snow, Inc. (JSI), a large public health consulting firm working in a total of 106 countries, including the US. Joel is the president of JSI and also of World Education, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the poor through education, economic, and social development. He is a senior lecturer at the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health, and a frequent speaker on organizational strategy, nonprofit management, international development, and strategic management throughout the world. Joel is known across the globe for his work advising and strengthening public health programs. He studied math and physics at the University of Michigan and management at MIT’s Sloan School.

El sector turismo es uno de los más afectados debido a las restricciones de movilidad implementadas por los países miembros del Sistema de la Integración Centroamericana (SICA); no obstante, desde ya se preparan programas y estrategias que llaman a la acción para reincorporarse con más fuerza y de forma sostenible, y que permitan la recuperación de este rubro en un corto, mediano y largo plazo.
En la entrevista “SICA Al Aire”, conducido por la Jefa de Gabinete de la Secretaría General del SICA, Olinda Salguero, la Secretaria Ejecutiva de la Secretaría de Integración Turística Centroamericana (SITCA), Ilka Aguilar, informó que la región recibe a más de 24 millones de excursionistas y turistas, que en su mayoría provienen de Norteamérica; además que a causa del COVID-19, según la Organización Mundial de Turismo (OMT), la reducción de visitantes será de un 20 y 30 %.
Ante este panorama, otra de las invitadas a la entrevista, la Secretaria General de la Agencia de Promoción Turística de Centroamérica (CATA por sus siglas en inglés), Carolina Briones, aseguró que ya se realizan acciones, y se diseñan planes y estrategias para la recuperación del sector, lo cual se traducirá en un crecimiento económico para la región.
“Estamos trabajando y tenemos un plan de mitigación y de recuperación, que trabajamos en alianza con los técnicos del CATA. Sabemos que el turismo para región centroamericana tiene un valor muy importante y representa para el PIB de cada país un crecimiento muy relevante”, aseguró Briones en la entrevista SICA Al Aire, donde el tema a abordar fueron los retos de la industria y el multidestino turístico después de la crisis del Coronavirus.
