Benefits

·Freedom from Darkness — The sunlight fades as early as 6 p.m, leaving the villagers in complete darkness. With solar lantern lighting, they have about an additional five hours of light to add to each day.

·Freedom from Illiteracy — More hours of light means more hours for children to study and get a better education, which is crucial to improving their social-economic future.

·Freedom from Poverty — With solar LED lanterns, the villagers no longer have to pay for expensive kerosene lanterns. Also, with more hours of light, the men and women have additional hours to work, which means more income for each household.

·Freedom from Hunger — More income means more money to better feed each member of the family; a daily concern for villagers.

·Freedom from Disease — Kerosene lanterns give off toxic and dangerous fumes; solar LED lanterns do not. LED lanterns also provide extra visibility, which helps against nighttime hazards.

USC Global Health Lecture Series 2012-2013

In international development and global health there is a wide gap between what academic research and policy makers support and what the field realities dictate. In this lecture, Joel Lamstein, founder and president of John Snow, Inc., outlined those differences and discussed the challenges and successes in translating policies into implementation at one of the world's premier public health organizations.

I've purchased a new implement of destruction here at the Grassy Knoll-- this light duty electric chipper. The ultimate weapon in the war against the scrub brush that pops up everywhere on the property.

It seems to be of pretty good quality, despite the Chicago Electric Tool Company label on the front...

not sure exactly what this was for - obviosly harvested some kinda grain crop and dropped it in a gravity wagon or bailer

Fanta Zara Bah (27) is a youth leader in the conflict-affected town of Ségou and a participant in Cordaid's Accountable Local Governance Programme programme (PGLR).

"The programme has taught us a lot. We have received training on our rights and duties. We know now that the involvement of youth in the business of a community is crucial for its development.

In Ségou, for example, people would not pay taxes regularly. The training taught us that we need to educate them on the fact that the tax money will be used for community development.

We received training on the importance of prenatal consultations. In Ségou, there are still women who won’t go to a hospital for a health check. Some say that’s because they are uncomfortable visiting a younger doctor, in other cases, the spouses might refuse to pay the medical expenses.

We went around the city of Ségou to raise awareness among women. We also participate in radio shows to reach out to more people, including men.

Three months later, we followed up with the health centres and there was a big change: the number of women coming in for a prenatal consultation increased!

The advice I would give to young people is to remember that we are the future. Our communities and our countries will not develop without us.

We must get involved in all matters of the community, even if they try to sideline us."

Mali, one of the largest countries in the West African Sahel region, is known for its rich history and fascinating mix of cultures. Unfortunately, political turbulence and various regional conflicts have affected almost the entire population in the last decade. These and other challenges, such as climate change, food insecurity and mass displacement, call for an approach that gives Malians the means they need to turn the tide and move forward.

To make a lasting impact on the struggling West African regions, Cordaid believes we need a holistic approach that positively influences the most crucial elements in people’s daily lives. By combining efforts in strengthening civil society, creating a fair value chain, educating youth on topics such as sexual and reproductive health and rights and allowing them to influence governance and peace processes, we can pave the way to a peaceful and just future for all Malians.

Cordaid's programmes in Mali:

PGLR+

The Accountable Local Governance Programme (PGLR+) in Mali seeks to strengthen democratic institutions in 240 municipalities across the Gao, Tombouctou, Mopti, and Ségou regions. Funded by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Mali, the programme is carried out by a consortium of four Dutch NGOs: SNV, Oxfam Novib, the V4T Foundation, and Cordaid.

JNJ2

Jege ni Jaba means 'fish and onions' in Bambara, Mali's lingua franca. It is also the name of a programme that improves food security in the country. Some value chains have all the necessary conditions to be developed on a larger scale. However, farmers and producers are often facing challenges to grow their businesses. The main objectives of the programme are improving people's livelihoods, without increasing the pressure on the environment, and creating economic opportunities for women and youth.

Just Future

Just Future is a programme led by an alliance of international and local NGOs and civil society organisations to strengthen the capacity of civil society in fragile contexts. The alliance partners demand more accessible, responsive and accountable security and justice institutions, and more inclusive political governance and peace-making.

Jigiya

One of the goals of the Jigiya project ('hope' in Bambara) is to educate at least one million girls and boys on sexual and reproductive health and rights. The programme aims to significantly improve the youth's reproductive health and to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality. Cordaid provides technical assistance to the Jigiya project, which is being implemented in four regions: Kayes, Koulikoro, Segou and Mopti.

Dic. 02, 2020.
