Delaware Seashore State Park, Delaware

How different things look immediately after the first significant snowfall that covers up the green moss on the rocks and changes the mood of the place.

Nanjing Road (Chinese: 南京路; pinyin: Nánjīng Lù; Shanghainese: Noecin Lu) is a road in Shanghai, the eastern part of which is the main shopping district of Shanghai. It is one of the world's busiest shopping streets, along with Fifth Avenue, Oxford Street, Orchard Road, Takeshita Street and the Champs-Élysées. The street is named after Nanjing, capital of Jiangsu province and the former capital of the Republic of China. Today's Nanjing Road comprises two sections, Nanjing Road East and Nanjing Road West.

Nanjing Road is located in the city center, running in a west–east direction. Its eastern section is in Huangpu District and extends from The Bund west to People's Square. The western section begins at People's Square and continues westward towards Jing'an District.

East Nanjing Road is a dedicated commercial zone. At its eastern end is the central section of the Bund, featuring the Peace Hotel. Immediately west of the Bund precinct was traditionally the hub of European-style restaurants and cafes, although in recent years these have become less of a feature as the demographics of visitors to Nanjing Road have shifted from affluent local residents to visitors from around the country. Close by is the Central Market, a century-old outdoor market today specialising in electronic components and digital media. Further west is the Nanjing Road pedestrian mall. Located here are most of Shanghai's oldest and largest department stores, as well as a variety of domestic retail outlets, and some traditional eateries with a long history. From the perspective of the historical development of Nanjing East Road, the start and redevelopment of this road were driven by the pursuit of commerce and image. The commercialization of Nanjing East Road has both a promotion and a restrictive effect.

When we think about Silves, we immediately picture its orange-red castle, from King D. Sancho I (12th Century), which is, undoubtedly, magnificent.

But Silves evokes stories about other realms, remembered when we stroll through its meandering alleys. Legends about Moorish kings, especially the great Poet-King al-Mutamid (who has a legendary status but was quite real, born in Beja and ruler of Sevilha while all the Southern Peninsula was Arab), who marked his presence in Silves.

The main church of Silves (once a Cathedral) is beautiful, and across the street, we found the Moorish window, which never goes unnoticed.

Silves has many multifaceted historical layers, and we felt it every time we explored it.

*

These guys kill more people in Africa than any other animal or reptile.

I was in a motorized canoe literally big enough for the helmsman and two other occupants. This guy came up after being submerged and was way too close for comfort. The man operating this small floating dugout flotilla ten feet from this monster immediately swung the boat away and sped up the very small outboard engine. He told us later that was the closest he had ever been to a Hippo in ten years of doing this... Yes it was too close for comfort. But, I did manage to get a frame showing how close we were. Immediately after this frame he opened his enormous mouth baring his enormous teeth. Unfortunately my back was now to him and I did not get that shot. 😡 I don’t believe in retrospect I would advise others to employee this service. The Hippos were everywhere and this one came up soo unexpectedly after being submerged and out of sight he could have easily capsizes this canoe! Once is enough doing something stupid. Until the next time.. LOL

A hidden gem of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, the Uvaia is a vibrant, golden-yellow fruit from the Myrtaceae family. It is immediately recognizable by its distinctive pear-like shape and thin, delicate skin that encases an incredibly aromatic, juicy pulp. The flavor is a captivating blend of sharp, refreshing acidity with subtle tropical notes, often described as a more perfumed version of a lemon. While too acidic to be widely eaten fresh, it is transformed into exquisite jellies, tangy sauces, and revitalizing juices. This sun-kissed fruit not only offers a unique taste of South American biodiversity but also paints a beautiful picture of nature's simple elegance.

When I saw the hello prompt in the 122 pictures in 2022 group I immediately thought it would have to be a selfie. I don't do selfies, so was very relieved to see that there were other ways of saying hi.

#1/122 hello

These Tree V Fold photographs show trees forming a fantastic figure fashioned from branches and leaves.

The sign with birds in silhouette both open and closed catches the eye and makes for a great positive message as you walk from the Car Park to the Visitor’s Centre. I was very pleased with the single image and also with the joining of images which immediately offered two variants. The two variants were either the original full frame joining forming a Tree V Fold, or a sharper incised cut to make a more precise V Fold at the centre of the pictures.

The Sun and Winter go very well together. Bright and strong the shadow making light built everything, well photographically at least. This is a great place with excellent cafe and visitor’s centre making a superb human reaction to help wildlife. This place is a reserved world of natural wonders nestled in amongst our modern pressures of life and living that often overlook wildlife and the chance to be calmer and closer to the land, water and sky and also to those that never left the cycle of seasonal lifestyle.

Peggys Point Lighthouse (also known as Peggy's Cove Lighthouse) is in Peggys Cove and is an iconic Canadian image. It is one of the busiest tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The lighthouse marks the eastern entrance of St. Margarets Bay and is officially known as the Peggys Point Lighthouse.

Peggys Cove is a classic red-and-white lighthouse still operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The light station is situated on an extensive granite outcrop at Peggys Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. This lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada and one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world.

Visitors may explore the granite outcrop on Peggys Point around the lighthouse; despite numerous signs warning of unpredictable surf (including one on a bronze plaque on the lighthouse itself), several visitors each year are swept off the rocks by waves, sometimes drowning.

Peggys Cove is 43 kilometers (26 miles) southwest of downtown Halifax and comprises one of the numerous small fishing communities located around the perimeter of the Chebucto Peninsula. The community is named after the cove of the same name, a name also shared with Peggy's Point, immediately to the east of the cove. The village marks the eastern point of St. Margaret's Bay.(Wikipedia)

Swissair Flight 111

Swissair Flight 111 (SR111, SWR111) was a Swissair McDonnell Douglas MD-11 on a scheduled airline flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, United States to Cointrin International Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. This flight was also a codeshare flight with Delta Air Lines.

On Wednesday, 2 September 1998, the aircraft used for the flight, registered HB-IWF, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean southwest of Halifax International Airport at the entrance to St. Margarets Bay, Nova Scotia. The crash site was 8 kilometres (5.0 mi) from shore, roughly equidistant from the tiny fishing and tourist communities of Peggys Cove and Bayswater. All 229 people on board died—the highest death toll of any aviation accident involving a McDonnell Douglas MD-11 and the second-highest of any air disaster to occur in Canada, after Arrow Air Flight 1285. This is one of only two hull losses of the passenger configured MD-11, along with China Airlines Flight 642.

The initial search and rescue response, crash recovery operation, and resulting investigation by the Government of Canada took over four years and cost CAD 57 million (at that time approximately US$38 million). The Transportation Safety Board of Canada's (TSB) official report of their investigation stated that flammable material used in the aircraft's structure allowed a fire to spread beyond the control of the crew, resulting in a loss of control and the crash of the aircraft.

Swissair Flight 111 was known as the "UN shuttle" due to its popularity with United Nations officials; the flight often carried business executives, scientists, and researchers

Aircraft

The aircraft, a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, serial number 48448 registered HB-IWF, was manufactured in 1991 and Swissair was its only operator. It bore the title of Vaud, in honor of the Swiss canton of the same name. The airframe had a total of 36,041 hours. The three engines were Pratt & Whitney 4462s. The cabin was configured with 241 seats (12 six-abreast first-, 49 seven-abreast business-, and 180 nine-abreast economy-class). First- and business-class seats were equipped with an in seat in-flight entertainment system, installed at some point after initial entry into service. (Wikipedia)

It will not be immediately obvious that this is a "Saturday Timewatch" photo. However, in fact it goes back a thousand years and more.

The short version is that this is a section of the county boundary between Dorset and Wiltshire which has been known for hundreds of years as a ‘Shire Rack’. There are several explanations for the use of the word 'rack'. One possibility is that it is a hollow way or sunken lane mentioned on these pages before. In fact the track you can see is a public right-of-way that still runs for miles along the whole length of the rack. Another possibility is a corruption of ‘Shire Oak’ as large trees were often used as landmarks in Anglo Saxon charters and this dividing line did indeed originally mark the boundary between major land estates.

To the left of the big 'horizontal' tree is Wiltshire. To the right of the track is the county of Dorset. Even after hundreds of years, a raised bank can clearly be seen in places along the boundary,. However, at this location it is barely more than a foot or two feet high. So I used the tree to give that boundary effect instead.

It is a long article but should you wish to read more, here is the link that explained everything to me cernegiant.co.uk/group/DNHAS/DNHAS%20Shire%20Rack%20paper...

Long Tailed Tit engaged in early feeding activity immediately after sunrise

While out scouting during the recent heavy fog I discovered this tree and was immediately taken by it's beautiful symmetry and due to the thick mist I was able to isolate it from any distracting background. I hope you enjoy the image.

As always any comments, thoughts or critiques are much appreciated

Ricky

Founded in 1153. The buildings immediately adjoin the Church. They comprise the Prioress's Parlour, the Library, the Western alley of the Cloister, the arch of the Lavatorium and the Norman doorway of the Re- fectory. They form an L-shape. The best front faces East. The ground floor is medieval work of chequered stone and flints. Above it is a timber-framed structure with a plastered front, colour- washed and over-hanging on a moulded bressummer. 4 gables with moulded bressummers, bargeboards and pendants. The Southernmost 1 is over a projecting wing and has scalloped bargeboards, a cove beneath the bressummer and a cartouche in the gable. Balancing this projection at the North end of the front is a 2-storey porch. Beyond it is a small wing backing on to the Church which forms an L with the main building. Externally this is apparently Cl8 with a modern addition at its East end. The West front of the main building, which is the entrance front, has been modernised. The ground floor is of stone, above plastered, with 4 gables having moulded bressummers, billet-moulded bargeboards and pendants. Tiled roof, Modern windows. The stained glass artist Thomas Willement was responsible for most of the Cl9 alterations; he also incorporated some medieval stained glass into his design for the interior.

A view from near Peveril Point East towards Swanage Pier. I love the way the eye is immediately drawn towards the white shelter on the pier.

As I approached a small car show in my area, I was immediately captured by this beautifully maintained 1967 Mustang Fastback.

The owner of this fine looking classic muscle car told me that he has owned this car for 43 years. It had begun life as a six-cylinder - it now sports a 302c.i. V-8 taken out of a 85’GT Mustang. Power/torque to the rear wheels/tires is handled by a nine-inch Detroit locker differential. Amenities include; A/C, cruise control and a tilt steering wheel. Rack and pinion steering along with power disk front brakes compliment the steering and braking. Under the hood the 302 is fed by a Holly Sniper EFI with matching distributor. An aluminum radiator and electric cooling fan keep this little pony running efficiently.

I was told that originally, the car was yellow but now, as everyone can see, it's dressed in a striking rich, flawless red paint. A real “eye catcher”.

Hope ya’all enjoy ……………….

Btw- I also have front end views of this fine car that I may be posting later.

Note: I would love to have the opportunity to shoot these cars on location (a "location of my choosing") but this doesn't seem to be in the cards so I have to deal with the cards I am dealt with.

On Windy Ridge. Poppyseed saw this and immediately plopped down in the shade to survey the countryside. At 10,000 feet, she didn't have much endurance.

This is one of about 3 well known locations in Colorado for the wind-blown bristlecone pines. This must be the most photographed tree in Colorado.

Getting here involves about ten miles of very rocky and steep road. I have done it twice in an AWD Subaru Forester, but would not try it again, even if I still had the car. A high-clearance pickup or any true 4wd ORV can do it readily.

At one time it was believed that the bristlecone and closely related limber pine would be immune to the ravages of the pine beetle, which normally affects the lower-growing lodgepole pine. It has now been shown that the beetle can get up to this elevation, and some authorities are predicting 100 percent mortality in all 3 species.

8:00 a.m. Sunday - I had no idea this had gone explored until I logged in this morning and noticed it had 17,000 views!

5:00 p.m. Sunday - Now at 32,000 views. No question that without Poppyseed, this would just be an ordinary photo. She is enjoying being a famous dog. Just a week ago, another, very mundane, photo of her was also explored. Can't be a coincidence. Flickr works in mysterious ways, which they will not divulge.

Noon Tuesday and 69,000 views. Thank you all. Of my 7 explored images, this is the only one that I feel is really worthy of the honor.

Immediately inside the front door at Ward Z. The security door is open, and bars belong to the external gate some 12 feet away.

Z Ward was a separate building at the Glenside Mental Hospital that catered for the criminally insane. Built in 1885, it is now empty and preserved by the National Trust.

Last summer I received an e-mail from a person who was creating an album of original music in the spirit of the late 1950s through the 1960s. Daniel Vega is his name and he was inquiring if he could use one of my photos for his cover.

This immediately captured my imagination because it was a musical version of "times past", very much like what I have been doing with my models.

There was no hesitation on my part to say yes, and as a matter of fact, I gladly offered to create a new photo for his project.

Over the months, Daniel sent me sections of tracks he had been working on so I could get the vibe he was aiming for.

His music took me back to

a time I remember distinctly, where songs were drifting out of store fronts, open windows and passing cars, creating a sound track to those potent years of my life.

Out of the photos I had created for Daniel, this is the one he chose; a dream-like point of view that embodied the heart and soul of that era; The Record Shop.

Although he never personally knew those times, he understands it's heart beat.

This little bird adds a lot of beauty with it's vibrant colored feathers flashing through the rainforest. Although they are not a large bird you can not miss them as their color draws your eye immediately. It was a thrill to see them and this is an image of the male. The female is a yellowish green in coloring but also very beautiful.

Wishing you great day !!!!!!!!!!

You walk into the room

With your pencil in your hand

You see somebody naked

And you, you say, "Who is that man?"

You try so hard

But you don't understand

Just what you will say

When you get home

Because something is happening here

But you don't know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

You raise up your head

And you ask, "Is this where it is?"

And somebody points to you and says

"It's his"

And you say, "What's mine?"

And somebody else says, "Well what is?"

And you say, "Oh my God

Am I here all alone?"

But something is happening

And you don't know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

You hand in your ticket

And you go watch the geek

Who immediately walks up to you

When he hears you speak

And says, "How does it feel

To be such a freak?"

And you say, "Impossible"

As he hands you a bone

And something is happening here

But you don't know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

You have many contacts

Among the lumberjacks

To get you facts

When someone attacks your imagination

But nobody has any respect

Anyway they already expect you

To all give a check

To tax-deductible charity organizations

You've been with the professors

And they've all liked your looks

With great lawyers you have

Discussed lepers and crooks

You've been through all of

F. Scott Fitzgerald's books

You're very well read

It's well known

But something is happening here

And you don't know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

Well, the sword swallower, he comes up to you

And then he kneels

He crosses himself

And then he clicks his high heels

And without further notice

He asks you how it feels

And he says, "Here is your throat back

Thanks for the loan"

And you know something is happening

But you don't know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

Now you see this one-eyed midget

Shouting the word "NOW"

And you say, "For what reason?"

And he says, "How?"

And you say, "What does this mean?"

And he screams back, "You're a cow

Give me some milk

Or else go home"

And you know something's happening

But you don't know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

Well, you walk into the room

Like a camel and then you frown

You put your eyes in your pocket

And your nose on the ground

There ought to be a law

Against you comin' around

You should be made

To wear earphones

'Cause something is happening

And you don't know what it is

Do you, Mister Jones?

How many have seen the movie "Free Solo"? It made my hands sweat in the theater. Yes, I saw it in the theater. Anything about Yosemite to me is a must see. The movie is about a young man climbing El Capitan without ropes or harnesses. An impressive feat. So as we drove the loop road and came close to El Capitan, my wife was spotting for climbers. She immediately saw the tent parked about 1/3 of the way up or so. You will have to zoom in to see it better but it's just amazing to me the limits that people can push.

My eye was immediately caught by the lovely, yellow Sunflowers peeking through the panes of this window in Lacock village, Wilstshire, UK. Sunflowers are always so cheerful, like miniature suns on earth!

Grey Seal Pup

[halichoerus grypus]

I went to Ballantrae Bay, after lunch, today. This beautiful little guy was lying on gravel on the beach, looking sad, lost and lonely... I thought he had slipped from the rocks, behind, and couldn’t get back into the sea. Some people (three!) were very concerned so I called the Scottish SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) who immediately dispatched an officer to the scene.

The officer called me, a couple of hours later, saying she couldn’t find the pup...I gave very explicit directions, and she arrived at the place I had been, earlier. It seems the tide had come in and, either, the pup took off into the sea, or his mother came to collect him after feeding, all day.

I checked on the University of Google (!) and it appears that after four weeks, the seal cows abandon their babies!!! I was aghast!

I really hope this poor wee soul isn’t as old as four weeks, or that he is maybe six or seven weeks and can fend for himself...U of G also said that after being weaned at four weeks, the pups live off their fat reserves, for quite some time.

Nature, eh? Beautiful but brutal...

Come on, wee sweetie - you can do it!

Looking towards the gate house entrance from immediately inside the camp. The ramp is to the left in this view. Slightly further in, also on the left is what I call the Path to Oblivion. (See photo). Once the selection process was completed, those chosen for death were made to march towards their fate in the gas chambers.

There were a lot of tour groups the day I visited. That's the reason there are so many people present in this shot.

The calmly flowing waters of a swollen Kickapoo Creek gently touch the concrete footings currently supporting the passage of this heavy, 131-car, southbound Union Pacific coal drag as its two, lead, AC six-axles ride their dynamic brakes, coasting downhill across a combination deck plate and lattice through truss bridge along the former C&NW "SI Line" outside Bartonville on a gloomy July morning. This train of loaded aluminum BethGons -- symbol CNAPW 14 -- are topped out with over 18,000 tons Wyoming's finest black diamonds; Filled at Peabody's North Antelope Mine in the state's rich Powder River Basin, these hoppers have only a few short miles left to travel before reaching their destination at NRG Energy's Powerton Generating Station near Pekin. The train will soon cross the Illinois River drawbridge and immediately make a right turn onto the IMRR and down into Crescent Yard for interchange where they'll tie down and the loads will wait for an Illinois & Midland crew to spot the cars at the plant for final dumping. Slated for decommission come the end of 2028 due to the country's relentless insistence on "cleaner" energy alternatives, Powerton is the sole remaining, actively burning coal-fired power plant to still remain standing in the greater Peoria area, outliving the facilities at Havana, Hennepin and Canton's Duck Creek (2019), and eventually the E.D. Edwards Station at Bartonville (2022). Once closed, it'll be another major hit in activity levels for a route that is already down in traffic. Twice weekly scheduled manifest service between Peoria and Clinton, IA, as needed coal, grain and ethanol unit traffic, and seasonal ballast trains are pretty much the bulk of what traverses this line.

For southbounds, this is the final, and most dramatic, crossing atop a snaky Kickapoo Creek which twists and turns beneath the rails of the Peoria Subdivision in six different locations within just about a short, two mile stretch of track. Just about a half mile back from this bridge, the train is still working through the CTC controlled interlocking at "Peoria JCT" where the Peoria Sub main to South Pekin splits from UP's "Low Line," which routes trains for Peoria area interchange into and out of their small Adams St. Yard just a short distance away on the city's southwest side. The single-tracked Peoria Subdivision, which runs south out of Nelson away from the busy Geneva Sub, uses a combination of CTC, TWC and ABS infrastructure to route what little traffic runs down this line and is also the only class 1 of four that has a "through route" through the city. A line that does not get much attention from photographers, an older "winged" EMD SD70ACe on the point of a well timed coal load just was enough for me to grab the camera and quickly pick it off at this very seldom shot location.

I sure could do without that walkway.

Dr Plastic surgeon, immediately picked up on my insecurity about these "finger toes" & tried to make me feel better. He said, "What's wrong with long toes? I have long toes! But the damage had been done. He would either volunteer to show his shameful long toes or he would never see me in sandles again :)

……………………………………………………………………….

My health company, every three months, for three days, sends me to cover a shortage of staff, in the Lipari hospital, (and so do my colleagues), in the little free time I have available, I dedicate myself to my photographic passion.

Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Islands (they are located north of Sicily, one hour by hydrofoil from Milazzo); Lipari, under the fascist dictatorship, was the seat of forced confinement for political opponents, it was considered "a Sicilian Alcatraz", among all the islands of confinement, Lipari was most likely the most liveable, both for its considerable size that favored the relations of the confined with the inhabitants, both because, to a greater extent than elsewhere, in Lipari, confined persons were allowed to live in private residences, together with their families or other companions. I found written: "Being on an island that belongs to another island means feeling doubly foreign, tied to the will of the gods and nature, where every certainty can be swept away by the waves of that sea that laps it in every intimate part, but it is a sensation that lasts for a few minutes, the Liparoti (the inhabitants of Lipari, ed) know it well (as all Sicilians know), the Greek concept of Xenia, hospitality, is inherent in them, a written rule, is a duty that provides sanctity and protection for the guest ".

Lipari has a long history as a place of detention. It is the island where the common criminals were initially confined, then with the law of November 6, 1926 (the twenty-year fascist period begins with the seizure of power by fascism and Mussolini, officially occurred on October 31, 1922), Lipari thus became the a place to isolate and confine opponents; the life of the confined began immediately after disembarkation, with lodging in the dormitories of the Castle, under the strict surveillance of the police and the fascist militia, every morning, the confined were subjected to the appeal and they received a daily pay of 10 lire; they could move freely in the town, without however exceeding the demarcation line that surrounded the inhabited center; walking was the main activity, the saddest and most melancholy ones pushed to the limit allowed, to see the ferries arrive from Milazzo, aware that the sea was guarded by motorboats armed with machine guns. A situation that will not prevent Nitti, Rosselli and Lussu from fleeing the island, on a moonless night, between 27 and 28 July 1929.

I made some photo-portraits of people I didn't know, I thank them very much for their sympathy and their availability; I tried to capture the essence of minimal photographic stories, collected walking along the streets of Lipari ... in search of fleeting moments ...I used a particular photographic technique for some photographs at the time of shooting, which in addition to capturing the surrounding space, also "inserted" a temporal dimension, with photos characterized by being moved because the exposure times were deliberately lengthened, they are confused -focused-imprecise-undecided ... the Anglo-Saxon term that encloses this photographic genre with a single word is "blur", these images were thus created during the shooting phase, and not as an effect created subsequently, in retrospect, in the post-production

And it is immediately evening, by Salvatore Quasimodo

Everyone is on the heart of the earth,

pierced by a ray of sunshine:

and it is immediately evening.

*

Tianzifang or Tianzi Fang (Chinese: 田子坊) is a touristic arts and crafts enclave that has developed from a renovated traditional residential area in the French Concession area of Shanghai. It is now home to boutique shops, bars and restaurants.

Tianzi fang is located in one of the most expensive areas in Shanghai. It has become a major tourist attraction and has more than 200 diverse small businesses such as cafes, bars, restaurants, art galleries, craft stores, design houses and studios, and even French bistros. It is adjacent to the SML center which is among the largest shopping malls in Shanghai upon completion.

It is also near the Shanghai Metro Line 9's Dapuqiao Station which is immediately to the south.

Despite all the businesses selling trendy craft and some foreign goods, the area does not have the look of having been overly beautified - electricity cables are still strung overhead, and air conditioning units are obvious on the outside of the buildings. The district is distinctly different from Xintiandi, another Shikumen redevelopment in central Shanghai further to the northeast, in that it has managed to preserve its residential feel, adding to its appeal.

Here is the opening page for the "simple" instructions for making your own cool Spirographic shapes. I remember struggling to keep the colored ink en from ripping the paper and the pins holding the big wheel in place!

Imagine letting your child play with sharp map pins AND higher math--all by themselves!

BTW, this is the 1967 version--Kenner introduced the toy in 1966.

That's what I did when I was a kid--this isn't my set but it is the same one that I had. I never had the patience to make the more complicated diagrams.

I found this set, missing its four pens and two plastic wheels,, but with the map pins (under the blue storage case) and the original booklet of instructions.

Here's the link to Jill and Jason's Flickrsite. You'll find Peggy's Cove Lighthouse in the Nova Scotia set.

I'm partial to Nova Scotia. I was a 17 year old merchant seaman in 1944 and we used to go part of the way on inland waterways and make up a convoy just off Halifax. I never got ashore, but I can SAY, "I've been there."

This from Wikipedia:

Peggys Cove is 43 kilometres southwest of downtown Halifax and comprises one of the numerous small fishing communities located around the perimeter of the Chebucto Peninsula.

The community is named after the cove of the same name. Peggy is a nickname for Margaret, and the village may have taken its name from St. Margarets Bay upon which it is situated. Local folklore has several alternative origins for the name. Some people claim Peggy was an early settler. Others say she was a young survivor from a shipwreck who remembered nothing of her life before her rescue; not even her name but was given the name Peggy by the family who adopted her.

The village was founded in 1811 when the Province of Nova Scotia issued a land grant of more than 800 acres (3.2 km2) to six families of German descent. The settlers relied on fishing as the mainstay of their economy but also farmed where the soil was fertile. They used surrounding lands to pasture cattle. In the early 1900s the population peaked at about 300. The community supported a schoolhouse, church, general store, lobster cannery and boats of all sizes that were nestled in the Cove.

Many artists and photographers flocked to Peggys Cove. As roads improved, the number of tourists increased. Today the population is smaller but Peggys Cove remains an active fishing village and a favourite tourist destination.

Peggys Cove is one of the busiest tourist attractions in Nova Scotia and is a prime attraction on the Lighthouse Trail scenic drive. The community's famous lighthouse marks the eastern entrance of St. Margarets Bay and is officially known as the Peggys Point Lighthouse.

Peggys Cove has a classic red-and-white lighthouse still operated by the Canadian Coast Guard. The light station is situated on an extensive granite outcrop at Peggys Point, immediately south of the village and its cove. This lighthouse is one of the most-photographed structures in Atlantic Canada[citation needed] and one of the most recognizable lighthouses in the world.[1]

Visitors may explore the granite outcrop on Peggys Point around the lighthouse; despite numerous signs warning of unpredictable surf (including one on a bronze plaque on the lighthouse itself), several incautious visitors each year are swept off the rocks by waves, sometimes drowning.[citation needed]

The first lighthouse at Peggys Cove was built in 1868 and was a wooden house with a beacon on the roof. Every evening the keeper lit a kerosene oil lamp magnified by a catoptric reflector (a silver-plated mirror) creating the red beacon light marking the eastern entrance to St. Margarets Bay. It was replaced by the current structure, an octagonal lighthouse was built in 1914. It is made of concrete and reinforced steel but retains the eight side shape of earlier generations of wooden light towers. It stands almost 15 metres (50 ft) high. The old wooden lighthouse became the keeper’s dwelling and remained near to the current lighthouse until it was damaged by Hurricane Edna in 1954 and removed. The lighthouse was automated in 1958. Since then, the red light was changed to white light, then to a green light in the late 1970s. Finally to conform to world standards the light was changed to red in 2007.

The lighthouse now contains a small Canada Post office in the lower level. During the summer months it serves as the village post office from where visitors can send postcards and letters. Each piece of mail receives a special cancellation mark in the shape of the lighthouse.

Two trees.

Our PROBUS Club Happy Snappers recently undertook a trip into The Rocks for an excursion with the intention being that we were to primarily photograph the architecture.

Once again I became distracted and lost focus when I spotted these two trees across the street from where I was standing and immediately the challenge changed from architecture to botany.

With just the right amount of sunlight filtering through the urban landscape it provided the ideal setting for this image as the trees also acted as an additional filter to the prevent the sunlight reaching the sandstone background.

In spite of the fascist regime, and despite the country stay with the lookout of the Navy, the activities of parties antifascists has always been active and this is evidenced by the fact that the announcement of the arrest of Benito Mussolini, which occurred on 25 July 1943, following the approval by the great council of fascism of the motion of censure proposed by Dino Grandi, the population of the country reacted with violent demonstrations against the podestà Francesco Locantore until, on 19 September, to his killing, although there were in the country the Canadian troops arrived that same day.

Immediately after the fall of the regime the political activity of the country shooting with force and returned to be felt those discontent present always in the minds of citizens, linked to usurpations of state owned lands and to the presence of the large landed estates with its relations of production based on abuse.

Another iphone snap the iPhone X this time and if I had waited and faffed about with a camera this one second long dirty look Sam gave Beau would not have been one of my favourite happy memories of her.. Sam was named by Jonathan's late wife and I thought "what sort of a name is that " she was already nicknamed Sam and we were forever saying she is a she not a he lol... Our darling Sam acted oddly one day and took off running from our car as we were putting the dogs in.. We had to leg it to catch up with her and put her in the large comfortable boot of our car. As we did so I was shocked and told Jonathan " Sams gone blind " I could tell her pupils had simply filled the coloured part of her eye. We got he to the vet immediately where she was diagnosed as completely deaf as well as completely blind with a brain tumour and told nothing could be done for her...we were in shock and she was put to sleep that same morning..her memory lives on through our memories and by having many photos' of her as I have of all my pets I thought this summed up her wonderful nature as after being interrupted from her sleep by Beau she just lay back down..she was so good natured ...Sue ..:)

I am way behind on Flickr, stuff been happening.....nothing to do with illness or anything like that but enough to make me

'feel' ill that's all....I hope to gradually catch up...

The delince of the small Montana village of Comertown, founded in 1913, began over 100 years ago, not that it was ever much beyond a few buildings and a post office.

The railroad coming through attracted homesteaders and farmers hoping to take advantage of the locality. But the land proved to be too dry for much more than ranching.

Residents began moving away almost immediately. The post office closed in 1957. Today, one or two of the houses are occupied.

The cemetery rests upon the hill beyond town.

When Michael stopped to take a photo, I immediately knew what photo he wanted to take. I decided to give it a go too. Whilst the photos are nearly identical in composition, we used different settings, which I further pushed in software to recover the blue of the sky.

It was -6C and raining water which of course froze immediately to anything it landed on. So the weather was foggy and super frosty. Why would anyone go out on such a weather? Well, if you want to get shots like this then your better be out with you camera! And I was.

Luckily my Sony and the Tamron Trio (17-28, 28-75, 70-180) are all weather sealed, so they didn't mind at all. And now they are drying up in a warm place and I'm browsing my photos.

I like this one as the rain shows up nicely and there's hint of red in clouds from the nearing sunset.

I shot numerous different versions (100+), but surprisingly this f/4 one is the best. Everything doesn't need to be pin-sharp in a landscape shot, a large aperture adds mood to the picture.
