In response to comments that I haven't made any ridiculous comments here........let me rectify this immediately...........

"I love you all"........

There you go.........now I'll just go and use a little mouthwash.

When I saw the hello prompt in the 122 pictures in 2022 group I immediately thought it would have to be a selfie. I don't do selfies, so was very relieved to see that there were other ways of saying hi.

#1/122 hello

Dent railway station is on the historic Settle-Carlisle Line, with services to Leeds railway station and Carlisle railway station. Dent village is approximately 4.8 miles (8 km) by road to the west, and 400 ft (120 m) below the height of the station, with Cowgill being the nearest small village, located around half a mile away but at the foot of a steep (maximum 20% or 1 in 5) spiral access road.

At an altitude of 1,150 ft (350 m) and situated between Blea Moor Tunnel and Rise Hill Tunnel immediately to its north, Dent is the highest operational railway station on the National Rail network in England.

Friends, when I was in my mid-40s (before I ever picked up a camera) an intuitive/seer told me that I was an artist who needed to be making art. I resonated with what she said. I immediately bought some art materials and started making art. No instruction. Among the first images I made were many mandalas ... all about the circle form. I recently came across some of those early creations in an old portfolio and had them made into digital images so I could share them with you. This one, Cosmic Abstract, was made with art markers on poster board (and countless hours of obsessive detailing, lol!)

My intention was to suggest a many-layered multi-dimensional reality wherein the unseen, due to its vastness, can only be pointed to, but is both very real and more monumental than all of that which can be seen. Since I will be 'graduating' from Planet Earth this month, sharing these is a now-or-never deal. More to come. Many blessings to you all. Thank you, from deep in my heart, for your interest in my work. ♥ K.

(p.s.: the "Taken on November 3, 2016" under the image is incorrect. That's the date I loaded the digitized image onto my computer. I created this piece sometime in 2000 or 1999.)

BNSF #8262 leads a westbound rack train through Flagg Center on the C&I. #8262 was one of 25 SD75Ms delivered to BNSF immediately after the 1996 BN-ATSF merger. Rated at 4,300 horsepower, the SD75Ms were a more powerful version of the SD70M; only 76 models were produced.

With new ES44C4s arriving in 2014, the unit was renumbered to #262 and was ultimately rebuilt at Mid-America.

It will not be immediately obvious that this is a "Saturday Timewatch" photo. However, in fact it goes back a thousand years and more.

The short version is that this is a section of the county boundary between Dorset and Wiltshire which has been known for hundreds of years as a ‘Shire Rack’. There are several explanations for the use of the word 'rack'. One possibility is that it is a hollow way or sunken lane mentioned on these pages before. In fact the track you can see is a public right-of-way that still runs for miles along the whole length of the rack. Another possibility is a corruption of ‘Shire Oak’ as large trees were often used as landmarks in Anglo Saxon charters and this dividing line did indeed originally mark the boundary between major land estates.

To the left of the big 'horizontal' tree is Wiltshire. To the right of the track is the county of Dorset. Even after hundreds of years, a raised bank can clearly be seen in places along the boundary,. However, at this location it is barely more than a foot or two feet high. So I used the tree to give that boundary effect instead.

It is a long article but should you wish to read more, here is the link that explained everything to me cernegiant.co.uk/group/DNHAS/DNHAS%20Shire%20Rack%20paper...

Founded in 1153. The buildings immediately adjoin the Church. They comprise the Prioress's Parlour, the Library, the Western alley of the Cloister, the arch of the Lavatorium and the Norman doorway of the Re- fectory. They form an L-shape. The best front faces East. The ground floor is medieval work of chequered stone and flints. Above it is a timber-framed structure with a plastered front, colour- washed and over-hanging on a moulded bressummer. 4 gables with moulded bressummers, bargeboards and pendants. The Southernmost 1 is over a projecting wing and has scalloped bargeboards, a cove beneath the bressummer and a cartouche in the gable. Balancing this projection at the North end of the front is a 2-storey porch. Beyond it is a small wing backing on to the Church which forms an L with the main building. Externally this is apparently Cl8 with a modern addition at its East end. The West front of the main building, which is the entrance front, has been modernised. The ground floor is of stone, above plastered, with 4 gables having moulded bressummers, billet-moulded bargeboards and pendants. Tiled roof, Modern windows. The stained glass artist Thomas Willement was responsible for most of the Cl9 alterations; he also incorporated some medieval stained glass into his design for the interior.

In 2013, as I was working through my 365 Project, this was the first time that I was in a position to take a photograph every single day and I immediately found it more difficult than it sounds. On days 6 through 10, which would be the first full week of the year that I would have gone back to work, I was struggling to get pics on days where I worked all day and it was dark (or close to it) when I got off and headed home. So...the next few pics will be taken from other days in January when I was able to photograph more places and/or things...like this great morning in Winter when everything is frozen/frosted over and the sun just begins to peak over the mountain horizon...beautiful time for having a camera!!

This photo was taken in 2013 during my previous Project 365…please visit my album for this “REMASTERED” Project 365 as I revisit each day of 2013 for additional photos to share!!

Three bracketed photos were taken with a handheld Nikon D5000 and combined with Photomatix Pro to create this HDR image. Additional adjustments were made in Photoshop CS6.

This group of four Cheetahs part of the well known 'Five Musketeers' also known as Tano Bora Fast Five was captured during my recent visit to Masai Mara,Sept 2018 when shooting a leopard relaxing up a tree with a recently kill we saw them majestically walking on the dirty drive way towards the look out point....as usual they were immediately surrounded by about too many other tourist vans all attempting to capture them. Was completely impressed with the aura of fearless and togetherness between them.Looks like this group will dominate the plains of Mara for a number of years to come (hopefully keeping fingers crossed they are not hurt or killed by poachers and herdsmen)

Immediately inside the front door at Ward Z. The security door is open, and bars belong to the external gate some 12 feet away.

Z Ward was a separate building at the Glenside Mental Hospital that catered for the criminally insane. Built in 1885, it is now empty and preserved by the National Trust.

My daughter is very shy, but interested in the idea of playing with her peers. She was crawling through this tunnel maze when she saw a young girl playing at this end of the tunnel. She immediately stopped in silent observation unwilling to engage with the girl who was talking to her.

Lucignano - Tuscany. Chiesa di San Francesco

The Franciscans settled in this part of the city starting from 1248. Presumably immediately afterwards, they began to build the convent and the church, which can be dated between the second half of the thirteenth century and the beginning of the fourteenth century, and which must have been at least largely completed, if already in 1289 it hosted the ceremony of submission to the dominion of Siena.

The facade is made of stone ashlars alternately in sandstone and travertine, and in the center there is a travertine portal surmounted by a large rose window in gray sandstone. To the right of the facade is the Oratorio del Corpus Domini and to the left is the entrance to the cloister of the convent of S. Francesco.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This Bull Elephant Seal came ashore and immediately began asserting his dominant status.

As the midday light show began coming to a close I started packing up my gear and making my way out of the canyon. Before exiting I decided to check out what David was shooting as his gear was aimed straight up to the walls above. It was there I turned my head back towards where I had just came from and noticed some overlapping pillars catching glow. I immediately grabbed my gear and popped on the tele for an intimate crop of the scene. The glowing scene ended up looking great, much like a Navajo rug with a wide spectrum of colors.

Looking towards the gate house entrance from immediately inside the camp. The ramp is to the left in this view. Slightly further in, also on the left is what I call the Path to Oblivion. (See photo). Once the selection process was completed, those chosen for death were made to march towards their fate in the gas chambers.

There were a lot of tour groups the day I visited. That's the reason there are so many people present in this shot.

Dr Plastic surgeon, immediately picked up on my insecurity about these "finger toes" & tried to make me feel better. He said, "What's wrong with long toes? I have long toes! But the damage had been done. He would either volunteer to show his shameful long toes or he would never see me in sandles again :)

In Kyiv, Mykhailo Nesterov, who was only 23 years old, found himself in the family circle of Adrian Prakhov. The owner's 18-year-old daughter Olena (Lelya), thin, not too beautiful, but witty and attractive, immediately treated the artist as an old acquaintance. And he sympathized with the girl more and more. It was from her that he painted the image of St. Barbara for the iconostasis of the Volodymyr Cathedral. The similarity turned out to be so obvious that the wife of the Governor General, Countess Sofya Ignatieva, visiting the work in the cathedral, could not hold back her indignation: "I can't pray to Lelka Prakhova!" Nesterov had to somewhat change the features of the great martyr Barbara.

Under the Angevins and the Aragonese fief of various lords: del Balzo, d'Avalos, Orsini, Loffredo, Grillo and Cattaneo.

Since the beginning of the twentieth century the town experienced the presence of the Italian Socialist Party, respecting in this sense the tendency lucana that in the early years of the Twentieth Century saw take root ideals linked to the proletariat internationalism of Marxist.

In spite of the fascist regime, and despite the country stay with the lookout of the Navy, the activities of parties antifascists has always been active and this is evidenced by the fact that the announcement of the arrest of Benito Mussolini, which occurred on 25 July 1943, following the approval by the great council of fascism of the motion of censure proposed by Dino Grandi, the population of the country reacted with violent demonstrations against the podestà Francesco Locantore until, on 19 September, to his killing, although there were in the country the Canadian troops arrived that same day.

Immediately after the fall of the regime the political activity of the country shooting with force and returned to be felt those discontent present always in the minds of citizens, linked to usurpations of state owned lands and to the presence of the large landed estates with its relations of production based on abuse.

Photo taken immediately before he was released. This is the second of the two juvenile Red Tailed Hawks released yesterday. This one was orphaned several months ago and although well taken care of, has had as little human interaction as possible; all in preparation for returning him to the wild.

I was driving home from a solo day's photography in Yorkshire late on Monday evening in preparation for my workshop there yesterday when I passed by Nateby and I looked across to my left and saw these trees lit up like a Christmas tree.

I immediately swung the minibus around and flung it into a small section of grass verge swiftly followed by grabbing my camera and tripod while 'jogging' to the perfect spot to set up. I knew that the falling sun which was behind me would soon be too low behind some trees and the moment would be gone.

What struck me was just how dark the background was in comparison to when I passed yesterday. The scene last night looked completely 'normal' with flat light but on this particular evening, the view was truly stunning. It reminded me of Tuscany with its rolling dales and isolated trees.

What a superb way to end a beautiful day in the dales. I hope you like it. Feel free to SHARE if you wish :D

May I immediately state that I am hopeless at identifying insects so I have guessed.

Please point out my mistakes and I will amend the titles

It was breezy and rather warm making what insects rather active and to our disappointment there were so few about however we stood for two hours and hoped for the best.

This is what I managed for my husband to kindly upload for me.

The bridge from which this image was taken affords a tremendous view, but imposes many challenges. To do the image well, a nice long exposure (30 seconds or so) is needed to both capture the details afforded by a low ISO and also to produce the motion blur in the water from the rapidly moving current. Yet the bridge is subject the winds that move along the river, introducing motion to the tripod and the bridge. Further, the bridge is shared by pedestrians, bicycles, high-speed trains, and vehicle traffic. The latter two cause the bridge to move as well. You can start the exposure, but before it completes, some form of bridge movement is likely to occur from a number of sources. So, you take many exposures and the odds are that one or two will rise above the others, free of motion and capturing the colors and objects just the way you wanted them.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derwentwater

Derwentwater (or Derwent Water) is one of the principal bodies of water in the Lake District National Park in north west England. It lies wholly within the Borough of Allerdale, in the county of Cumbria.

The lake occupies part of Borrowdale and lies immediately south of the town of Keswick. It is both fed and drained by the River Derwent. It measures approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) long by 1 mile (1.6 km) wide and is some 72 feet (22 m) deep. There are several islands within the lake, one of which is inhabited. Derwent Island House, an 18th-century residence, is a tenanted National Trust property open to the public on five days each year.

Derwentwater is a place of considerable scenic value. It is surrounded by hills (known locally as fells), and many of the slopes facing Derwentwater are extensively wooded. A regular passenger launch operates on the lake, taking passengers between various landing stages. There are seven lakeside marinas, the most popular stops being: Keswick, Portinscale and the Lodore Falls, from which boats may be hired. Recreational walking is a major tourist activity in the area and an extensive network of footpaths exists within the hills and woods surrounding the lake.

The Keswick—Borrowdale road runs along the eastern shore of the lake and carries a regular bus service. There is a lesser, or unclassified, road along the western shore connecting the villages of Grange and Portinscale.

Derwentwater gave its name to the Earldom of Derwentwater.

The lake is believed to be the last remaining native habitat of the vendace (Coregonus vandesius) fish from the 4 originally known sites: Bassenthwaite Lake and Derwent Water in the Lake District and the Castle Loch & Mill Loch in Lochmaben.[2]

Etymology

'Derwent' is " '(River) with oak trees', traditionally explained from Brit." (i.e.: Brythonic Celtic) " 'derwā' 'oak' plus suffixes, hence of the same origin as other English rivers named Derwent, Darwen, Darent and Dart...The river gave its name to Derwent Water (which was also known as the 'Lake of Derwent', 'Keswick Lake', or 'Keswick Water' in the 18th-19th centuries)...".[3] Plus "OE 'wæter', with the meaning probably influenced by its ON relative 'vatn'

Derwentwater's islands

There are numerous islands in Derwentwater, the largest being: Derwent Island, Lord's Island, St Herbert's Island, Rampsholme Island, Park Neb, Otter Island, and Otterbield Island. St. Herbert's Island is named after a C. 7th priest hermit, St. Herbert of Derwentwater.

The area immediately surrounding Page, AZ is one of our favorite places to explore. Endlessly fascinating hues and shapes, one can point the camera in any direction and find something interesting and beautiful to shoot.

Ever see someone and immediately judge them?

We all do it.

We look at the way someone dresses, speaks and acts for whatever window of time they spend before our eyes and make assumptions on what kind of person they are. Why do we do this? It's not fair. It's really just not fair.

I can admit, shamefully, that I was and am still catching my self that way. I decided when I saw this postsecret that I will do my best to no longer do this. &To treat others kindly, it sounds so cliché but it's so true. I'm in my teenage years, I have so much to learn from here on out. I've learned so much in the past 2years as they've been the hardest of my life. I wouldn't change a thing though, I've been through alot. Alot that most people know nothing about. I am a private person and I'll probably always be this way. I feel so terrible for the way I have treated people in the past. &I now even find myself being more effected by the harsh words of others. It's almost as if I've only just opened my eyes to the impact you can have on someones day just by one thing that is said to them. I hope that I can put a smile on at least one person's face just by a simple compliment or word of encouragement everyday. It's the easiest way to lift someones spirit, afterall. How hard is it to just be human and compassionate? Just a thought or two, hopefully that struck something in someone who read it like that postsecret did with me.

I immediately saw Frankenstein's monster in that ripped sticker. Only the left eye added , otherwise the shape is as it were.

There are a few things going on this image which may not be immediately apparent to the viewer, but having been so intimately involved in the process of creating this photograph, I have some insight on to share. If you are a regular follower of my feed, you'll likely know I do a lot of long exposure work. As in, super long. Typically I work with at least a 9 stop ND filter but often combine it with a second or go to a standalone 15 stop ND. Over the years, and thousands of photos, I have learned that film responds in some unusual ways when such strong ND filters get combined. Color film is not terribly IR sensitive, so the fact that my filters don't have IR-blocking coatings on them seems less like the issue. My working theory is that these filters pass more UV light than visible light and color film does have sensitivity that dips into the UV end of the spectrum. So in a sense I am getting some degree of UV over-exposure. The non-technical way of describing this is that my super long exposure color photography can get some funky colors to it. At first I worked to correct this back to "normal", with "normal" of course merely being the subjective benchmark I applied based on how my eyes and brain saw the world. Over time though I became less interested in normal. Part of that is because I don't need the photos to show me normal. I can see that with my own eyes. Rather, I enjoy seeing the alternative perspectives. What does the world look like if one can see a bit farther into UV, for example. The second thing going on is I am using a new color film put out by Silberra. I have not shot much of this film, so its behaviors and qualities is still unexplored ground for me. And I do like my unexplored ground. And lastly, I am always a bit fascinated at our own brain's ability to adapt to changing color temperatures and filter them back to what we call normal. This image was made late into sunset, and while the clouds were getting painted with some nice light, the beach itself had descended into a deep blue dusk. I couldn't see this blue of course because of the aforementioned workings of my brain. In fact, the beach looked more like it does in this photo, with a neutral sandy color, but reference photos made on my phone with the white balance set to daylight showed me the blue.

That is the backdrop for this photo. Once scanned I started doing some light processing to it, mostly cleaning up dust marks or the occasional film scratch. I balanced the exposure across the scene a bit but largely didn't touch the color too much other than some global corrections. And this image is the result. The colors that came out are a bit surreal. It is a subtle surrealism for sure, no crazy juxtapositions going on here, but one I enjoy.

Immediately to the south of town and very close to the sea, a rare geophysical formation is to be found that gave the suburb its modern name: Lake Vouliagmeni ("Sunken Lake"), a small brackish water lake fed by underground currents seeping through the mass of Mount Hymettus. It was once a large cavern that collapsed following an earthquake, probably during the early Middle Ages.

November 18th, 2024 - Another trip into the heart of Wheeling Land at Mingo Junction, OH to see what's happening and where. Upon arrival at sunrise, there wasn't much. But I managed to stumble into the 535 Mingo local crew making a pick up from the late running 218 road freight between Brewster and Rook.

The 535 crew is pulling down off of the Mingo Junction slide I referenced in my previous upload and passing behind what is left of the former Wheeling Pitt Steel Mill, now owned and operated by JSW USA Steel.

The remainder of the mill was idled for good in 2009 by OAO Severstal, later being sold off to RG Steel which declared bankruptcy in 2012. Buffalo based Frontier Steel, known for tearing down old facilities such as Mingo Junction purchased the property in 2014 for a paltry $20M USD and immediately began to tear down the blast furnaces and accompanying structures.

In 2017, Frontier had found a buyer in ACERO Junction for the more modernized portion of the mill that included the electric arc furnace installed in 2004, the 80" rolling mill and continuous caster. The following year the plant was once again sold to current owner JSW USA Steel for $80M USD. The India based company has continuously invested more money into their investment, turning the facility into quite the busy operation. A far cry from the time when Mingo was a fully integrated legacy mill employing hundreds more than the 160 employees there currently. In the end some business is better than none, particularly so in a place like Mingo Junction where the tax base is very bleak.

On the river side of things, American Commercial Barge Line towboat Leo G. Lutgring sits idly at one of the many landings throughout this part of the Ohio River Valley. It would depart upbound (northward) to other destinations shortly after I took this photo. The boat was named in 2013 to honor Jeff Boat Shipyards employee Leo G. Lutgring of 40 plus years of service.

On 15 June 1310 Baiamonte Tiepolo, a rebellious young nobleman, plotted together with other noblemen, a conspiracy to overthrow the government of the Serenissima. Their army had almost made it to St Mark's Square and was preparing to attack the government building. Puzzled by the roar coming from the street, Lady Lucia leant out of her house window and in doing so dropped (purposely?) a heavy mortar that she was holding immediately killing the flag holder of the army of rioters. This incident caused havoc amongst the insurgents who were subsequently easily defeated by the regular army.

As a sign of gratitude, the Venetian Republic granted to Lady Giustina the block of the rent fee, which was never raised untill the fall of the Republic. In remembrance of the event, an elderly lady in 1861, living in the same house, had a high-relief etched depicting the woman who saved with her mortar the city from dictatorship.

Immediately after a hazy sunrise, 143 wakes up the small hamlet of Boyle on route to Buffalo and ultimately Chicago.

When we think about Silves, we immediately picture its orange-red castle, from King D. Sancho I (12th Century), which is, undoubtedly, magnificent.

But Silves evokes stories about other realms, remembered when we stroll through its meandering alleys. Legends about Moorish kings, especially the great Poet-King al-Mutamid (who has a legendary status but was quite real, born in Beja and ruler of Sevilha while all the Southern Peninsula was Arab), who marked his presence in Silves.

The main church of Silves (once a Cathedral) is beautiful, and across the street, we found the Moorish window, which never goes unnoticed.

Silves has many multifaceted historical layers, and we felt it every time we explored it.

*

crepuscular rays (The ray of sunlight shining through the gaps of clouds to the ground ) over the beach at hong kong. i immediately took out my camera and captured this moment.

This was taken on a Quayside immediately north of the Canary Wharf financial district with its towers on the right of the picture. The curved tower in the centre is the London Marriott Hotel. The crane in the image is a preserved one from the time when Docklands was an active port not a financial centre. This was a 57 seconds long exposure using a B&W 10 stop Neutral Density filter. A few minutes after this picture was taken the first spots fell and I retreated to under a bridge by the DLR Station just in time before the downpour started which set in for the evening. I still managed a fair few more shots from undercover locations.

The picture was taken on a Tripod with a Sony A700 with a Sigma 10-20mm lens at 11 mm. One RAW image shot with a 10 stop ND Filter. After Raw adjustments I extended the sky to make room for more perspective correction. This is done in Photoshop by first extending the Canvas Size above the image by about 200 pixels. I had about the same amount of sky above the Towers. A rectangular selection was made and then edit and Free Transform. Then it is just a matter of dragging and expanding the sky into the extra canvas area. This gives more room above to use filter, lens correction custom and vertical perspective to straighten the converging verticals of the Towers.

A little Noise was removed with Nik Define. I used Topaz Clarity for more detail and Topaz Adjust applied on a duplicate layer with a mask to darken and smooth just the sky.

Seljalandsfoss ... is a wonderful and conspicuous waterfall that will immediately notice while driving along the Ring Road in Iceland.

.

Be ready to get wet as water splashes you as you get closer to waterfall. 😊 .

I was actually shooting a pier at the ocean when I looked behind me and saw this composition. I loved it immediately and the fast moving clouds give a nice touch to the sky.

I saw a sparkle of blue in the distant water and immediately checked with my binoculars. Yes, to my surrprise, it was a Ruddy in breeding plumage, but he was so far away that a decent shot was not possible. At that point, I decided to wait with strong conviction that my wanting to get a sharp image would impel this gorgeous creature to swim in my direction. I didn't have to wait as long as I had expected before he moved toward me, finally getting close enough. As is so often true when I have patience and perseverance, photographer's joy enveloped me as I clicked. One of the most interesting things about birds is how their plumage changes during breeding season. The male Ruddy is a magnet for bird and nature photographers because his bill turns from an uninspiring gray to a glorious powder blue during spring and summer and his feathers transform from a dull, grayish brown to an almost iridescent chestnut.
