The Crypt
We visited all 7 of the magnificent 7 cemeteries in London. Made up of Kensal Green, West Norwood, Highgate, Abney Park, Nunhead, Brompton and Tower Hamlets.
They were built to try and fight the overcrowding of cemeteries in the 1800's as decaying body matter was getting into the water streams and causing epidemics. The coffins in this huge Victorian crypt were by law to be made of lead inside.

Abandoned house in Luxembourg
Being in this house, I felt so much melancholy, it was clear it had been a house were very elderly people had been living, but after a very long life of happiness and family. To see it so frozen in time, unloved and silent felt strange and eerie.
In this room, a child bed was ll that was left and the photo you see on the wall was made from locks of hair to look like a flower.

A carriage from the famous feris wheel in Pripyat. The fairground was due to open just days before the nuclear disaster of Chernobyl in 1986, so this ride was left with no children to ride on, no laughter and fun. Just a stark reminder of the terror of nuclear fall out

The 5 of us climbed into this small chapel in Wales to be greated with blue walls covered with green, the paint flaking away to the floor and the smell of rotting wood laced the air. At the front lay this disintegrating organ, sadness flowed through the air of a once glorious space left in ruin.

I had a plan for tonight's shot but it didn't work out...went to Plan B that didn't work out either...so here's Plan C!
This was taken on day two of our trip to Bulgaria, within a night it went from a tiny dusting of snow on the peak of the mountain to a whole foot of snow. We awoke to a a beautiful cold white landscape which was absolutly beautiul.
Half of us got into the 4x4 and made our way to the peak. With a km still left to walk to the Buzluzdha monument that was right at the top we proceeded to hike in knee deep snow carrying cameras bags and costumes and lights. It was a test of endurace, by now rain had begun and it drenched us in cold winds from all side, finally out of breathe we made it inside. But it wasnt a relief, there were still howling winds inside and rain poured from the falling apart roof. A few times lighting clapped and part of the ceiling fell to the ground.
The poor model Dorina faced a freezing couple fo hours to continue with the photoshoot. She was truely amazing as myself and Nicola got her into the stunning costimes of Agnieszka Osipa, I set up my light and shot it as quickly as humanley possible. I had help from the others at all stages to help it go as quickly as possible. After the shot, we wrapped her in as many blankets as possible. Tired, cold and drenched we made our way back down the mountain, the rain finally stopped and when we reached the 4x4 we decided to try and fit all 10 of us inside, with some of the guys hanging out the doors and others on the bumper, we drove slowly back to our hostel to warm up. It was the hardest shoot I have done to date for my Underworld series, but completly worth it.

Since visiting the ballroom in 2012 the owners have redeveloped the estate and have moved in, how lucky for them that that this ballroom is now in their back garden, I feel lucky to have seen it while I did as it is no longer abandoned these photo's I feel will immortalise it forever for those that never got to see inside.
It was late in 2012 at 4.30am we drove to the ballroom, all the way I kept thinking it was the stuff made from fairytales, I wasn’t even sure if it could actually even exist, an underwater ballroom, lying deep beneath a lake on an abandoned estate, built in Victorian times. You cant get to the ballroom by land as we would never break an enter any building and the door to the hut that takes you to the ballroom is locked and alarmed, it left no option but to make it across the lake to an island where the door was open, in the pitch black we made it through the trees and to the lake bank where we blew up a boat, and rowed towards the island.
Soon we were inside the ballroom, being underneath water felt strange like being in one of those underwater aquariums or a glass bottom boat, but nothing really could prepare you for being in a room, where the entire ceiling is made from thick glass and nothing but water above you, a long tear shaped corridor connected to a spiral staircase which I believe takes you to hut which is the entrance from the outside. It was truly the stuff from fairytales. The sun started to come up and light came through the glass for the first time, despite the algae that had obviously been growing for years, it looked very beautiful, the whole room glowed green, we photographed for an hour or two before decided to make our exit, seeing things like this is just so special and I cant believe how lucky I am to have such incredible experiences as this.

I was lying on my sofa waiting, as any moment Dave and Stephanie would arrive from their trip down from Birmingham, it was 11pm and my eyes were slowly closing after not getting much sleep the night before, thinking about the excitement of the shoot coming up. A crazy dash to France to shoot the beautiful Stephanie Warwick, with help from Dave Kai Piper and my lovely husband Danny, who even though he was working all week said he would drive the 10 hours to get us there and back to two stunning location in France.
My eyes flicked open as my phone vibrated next to my head, marking the arrival to my door of two smiley looking people, excited about the shoot about to happen. We all spread out around the house to capture a measly 4 hours sleep before heading to the Euro Tunnel, surprisingly despite the time, we were full of cheer until we almost reached the tunnel and suddenly realised realised we were in the wrong place! 10 miles from the check in and only 15 minutes to get there. It wasn't gonna be easy 4 of us packed into a tiny Nissa Micra, loaded down with bags in the boot, we burned it at 100 miles an hour and made it by the skin of our teeth, laughing and breathless we felt super lucky we had made it.
Soon we were in France and as Danny\s first outing to Europe and driving on the wrong side of the road, he did surprisingly well at keeping on the right side of the road and after a 3 hours drive we had arrived at the first location. It was 11am and with a 2 hour time window to get the shots before we moved to our next location we had to move fast. I had visited the first chateau a few months prior with Darren, Dusty and Nick and instantly fell in love, despite being very dark inside and covered in pigeon poo, it had a special fairytale quality to it, with a grand piano covered in dust, its keys broken, never to be played again, with Stephanie lying on the cold wood, the whole scene looked like a twisted dark fairytale. Tightly holding onto some dying roses we had found, the final photo looks like a beautiful tragedy. Using my Elinchrom kit to light Stephanie really helped as the area was very dark, Danny help the softball to the right of the piano as I balanced my 3 legged thing tripod over the spiral staircase and the piano to get the shot straight for above.
I had a large suitcase filled with the glorious costumes of Agnieszka Osipa an amazing designer, who I have been a huge fan of, for over a year. It made my year when she said she would send over from Poland 4 of her beautiful costumes for the shoot. Stephanie looked incredible in all of them. And despite the freezing cold and the effort and time it took to get inside each one, it was totally worth it and Stephanie remained brave from the cold throughout.
At 1.30pm, slightly behind schedule we drove to the next location, the sun would set soon, so we had to be quick, Dave captured film of us getting ready as gale force winds slammed the window shutters closed, as old doors toppled to the floor and Stephanie shivered under both hers and Dave's coat, her frozen hands in Dave's gloves. I can’t believe her stamina, even my hands were in pain as I put together my soft box, we moved quick and shot two costumes, before swiftly making it back to the car. We all shared a huge group feeling of accomplishment and capturing some stunning photos. 3 hours later we were back to the Euro tunnel after a rather hair-raising near crash on a round about where our car deiced it wanted to partake in a bit of drifting action infront of some on coming cars. Luckily we didn't drift too far and then after our morning incident of nearly missing the train, we again found ourselves in the lorry lane instead of where we were meant to be. The lorry drivers giving us the most awful looks, we finally got out the huge queue of lorries and again made it to the train by seconds.
Our spirits throughout the whole trip despite the usual challenges and hair-raising experiences remained high and we laughed the whole time. It was a tiring shoot, with not much sleep, but filled with so many laughs and being surrounded by wonderful people, its shoots like this that make me feel so lucky to be doing what I do. By 11pm we were all back at my house in bed out like a light for some much deserved sleep.
I’m off to Bulgaria tomorrow for another shoot, with lots of snow and an incredible building, I am really looking forward to my next adventure.

'I will never hold you in my arms, But will hold you in my heart forever'
What a way to begin 2015! Jen Brook is an amazing model who contacted me back in March 2014 after I had given a talk at The Photography Show in Birmingham saying she would love to do a shoot with me (I’d meet her briefly backstage that day). I waited for a perfect opportunity to do a shoot and 8 months later we were throwing ideas together for a shoot in Belgium in 3 amazing locations that I had found throughout the year.
The night before Jen arrived from Manchester at my house at 9pm we were chatting away trying on the amazing dresses that had been sent over by the incredibly talented Molly Mishi May, my spare room became a dressing room for the night, a blizzard of lace, satin and flowing gowns. It was 1am when Richie and Darren (who kindly said they would help out with the shoot) made it to the house from Norwich and were were off packing a tonne of equipment and ballgowns into the car. I had recently saved up for a Elinchrom Quadra kit and this would be the first time out shooting with it, which I was really looking forward to introducing flash into my model shoots on location.
Arriving at the ferry with lots of time to spare, me and Jen curled up on a sofa for an hour of much needed sleep, which continued into the early morning in the car as we drove and finally made it to Maison Viron, a quaint manor house left to ruin deep in the Belgium countryside. Tired we made our way in with arms full of bags and dresses in the rain into the house. The trickling rain our sound track as Jen applied makeup and I set up my lights for the first time. Firing of a couple of tests shots I tried to keep the flashes to a minimum as its a big risk while inside an abandoned building not to get caught. I captured Jen in a beautiful vintage nightgown tragically onlooking an antique pram and baby basket that had been left in the house to decay. She was a beautiful ghost figure, we also shot a photo for her Dream Catcher project, after wandering round the house she had stumbled across a desk light by window light with books all over the place and I captured her sitting at the desk in the darkness, light only by the window.
Soon we were driving to the next location via some food and more sleep for me and Jen, when you go without your bed for a night we grabbed as many zzz’s as we could along the way. We started shooting in the abandoned Blue Christ church racing against time as the sun was setting, it was freezing cold and Jen slowly started to turn blue, so instead of completing the shots planned for the location we decided to make a return after our first location of the second day. I had to adjust and compact the plans of the next day and feared we wouldn't fit all the shots in on time. Its always a challenge shooting during the darkest days of winter when there is so little hours of daylight. Jen had brought a cute tiger water bottle to keep her warm, but hours after he had been filled with hot water, he too was freezing cold and so we made it back to the car to go get some food to relax a little in our compact hotel room.
Alarms set bright and early and much more alive after a good nights sleep we made our way to the abandoned spa where we would shoot the next 3 shots. Poor Jen had to endure a climb down into the building, she was so brave and we made it into the building! When we finally made it inside, still before the sun had risen we we shocked to find the doors to the main room had been locked, but then we noticed people inside and they showed us an alternative way in. They were also doing a photoshoot so we deiced to head upstairs out of their way, I had Jen perched on a balcony with a huge drop down in a stunning Molly Mishi May white gown. Luckily when we decided to shoot downstairs we did a swap and they headed upstairs. Inside the glorious main room of the spa, with ornate fixtures all around, I set Jen up in the middle of the room and we began tossing the dress for some dramatic shots that I adore. We had to be quick as the room is overlooked, so we got the shot in under 3 minutes and then hid again. (whilst watching carefully that no one was outside watching us)
On a strict budget with time, we had to leave the spa at 11 to get back to the church where we would re shoot in the daylight, after the drive to the church and taking everything out of the car, we arrived at our previous entry point to find it had been locked!! I can’t tell you how my heart sank and at first Richie was joking around, but alas it was shut, I decided to do a walk around to see if there was another entry point and disappointedly return to the group as there wasn’t, I was shocked to see they had been joined by a large group of guys. Apparently they had been inside and had wedged the door shut, luckily they had decided to leave at that point and our entry was again available.
The church was a completely different place, the sun was shining and the natural light was gorgeous, I decided I would reshoot all the shoots that I had done the previous evening as the warm sunlight made such a difference to the photos, its always worth that decision to go that bit further in order to get the shot. I’ll never forget Jen stood in a huge ballgown (that had had its very own suitcase) stood in the beautiful abandoned church light streaming through the windows in a cloud of smoke, she looked like something from a fairytale. To make it back to the ferry in time we left 4 hours to drive back and after the ferry journey the next mission was getting Jen to her train on time, bless her she still had to get back to Manchester that night and with a deadline for the train and a delayed exit from the ferry Darren drove like a lunatic on a mega mission to get her back to the station, poor Jen gets travel sick and looked green as he swerved around the roads enduring, but with mines to spare she legged it to the rain and made it by the skin of her teeth.
It was a tiring shoot due to our all night drive to Belgium and it being freezing cold and it had its challenges throughout, but its always the ones that take the most effort that are so worthwhile and the crazy things that happen that leave you with the stories to talk about for years to come. Thank you Jen, your endurance of the cold, lack of sleep, rain and climbing into difficult places will never be forgotten and Darren and Richie for the effort and helping creating these shots. More to come soon.

The Grand Hotel
Built around 1904, set in the pretty Belgian country side, this hotel would have been a grand place in its time, but now it remains an empty shell, the floor in most places falling through.
This was a shot stop off on one of my road trip stop Belgium, it was also my first building where I fell though a floor, luckily it was only a couple of metres, but still a rather hair raising moment as I felt myself falling through the splintering wood, it was a huge relief to find my feet on something solid just underneath.

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything
I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

Deep into that darkness peering, long I stood there, wondering, fearing, doubting, dreaming dreams no mortal ever dared to dream before.
Edgar Allan Poe
This story starts a couple of months prior and an exciting trip underground, deep under the surface of London lies a Victorian crypt, mainly unseen to the public apart from the odd tour yearly to see the remains of the lead lined coffins of an era past. It wasn't an easy feat to get inside, but for me it was breathtaking to see something you just would never see in normal everyday life. Some may say my heart is filled with darkness, but it could also be said that had we not been brought up to be so uncomfortable with death and dead bodies, there could in another world be part of our life. But for now they lie hidden from society, a fascination for the inquisitive.
My second adventure to the crypt stated at 11.30 in the safeness of my home, beautiful Roswell Ivory arrived from Milton Keynes and soon followed by Rosie Lee to create some artistry on Roswell’s face and hair. We had great fun getting ready and trying on the beautiful gowns of Joanne Flemming who kindly sent them over for the shoot and before long we were in the car with my husband Danny to drive us to our first location, we said goodbye to Rosie who had another makeup job on. Unfortunately after long we realised that the traffic on that day was truly horrific, we were racing for time to get to Brompton cemetery but it became clear that we were not going to meet our 4pm sunset deadline, deflated we spent more time sat in traffic. We decided to go and eat some food at the location of the crypt. But on arrival it was clear that there was not any decent places to eat, it was cool though as we had time to kill before we could try and attempt to get into the crypt.
We headed over to the town we used to live and had a great tapas meal, with raised spirits we made our way back to the crypt, it was 6.30pm by now and in the cover of darkness we made our first attempt, but watching for a while from the car it was clear that the area still had a good few dog walkers and passers by, also a nosey neighbour meant we couldn’t proceed.
We chose to go back to my house and return in complete night, it was hard to get inside when we did return, but we made it, Roswell was a true ninja and we couldn’t have done it without the help of Danny, who was amazing. We shot in silence in the crypt for a couple of hours and then realised it was nearing 2am! We had shot 4 beautiful dresses and were super happy with the Victorian story of death and tragedy we had captured, tired we embarked on the massive task of getting out from at least 10ft underground.
It was a truly exhausting shoot and even a day later I am aching from head to toe, but it was a special thing to be inside such an interesting place and to see dates on the coffins going back to the early 1800’s. The rotting hydraulic lift that lowered the heavy lead lined coffins into the crypt still remains, like a steam punk memory of time gone by, with an estimate 2500 coffins inside it felt to me almost calming to be so far away from the living and taking a step back in time to a world so distant from where we are now.

I visited the fascinating Heysham Trench graves in March 2015 with Katie, Darren and Michael on a dark tourism inspired 3 day road trip around the UK, this outing took us north near Lancashire to the ruins of St Patricks Church, nearby to St Peters Church. The stone open graves near the sea were a almost mythical site to behold, apparently dating from the 11th century they could be the first examples of Christian burials, but its much to debate. They seem to have viking links and have also been found throughout other places in the United Kingdom.
We made our way to the graves through strong wind and on arrival they were full but one with rain water. In the nearby graveyard many graves showed people succumbing to the waves with most deaths being because of drowning, it is thought that these stone graves were for the privileged , but this is just rumour and all seems quite mythical in the possibilities of why they were there.
We all couldn’t help climbing inside the dry one, I myself spent a good few minutes lay down closing my eyes listening to the wind and waves all around. When I reminded Katie that a dead body had once been in there she jumped out so quickly, myself I found it peaceful inside, what amazing scenery to have all around you in your final resting place.

About 55 million light-years away in the constellation Coma Berenices, Messier 100 is a textbook grand-design spiral and one of the brightest members of the Virgo Cluster. Its near-perfectly wound arms are so symmetrical that the galaxy earned the nickname Mirror Galaxy - trace lanes of dust and glowing H II regions where new stars ignite. Over the past century astronomers have recorded six supernovae here, underscoring the galaxy’s vigorous cycle of stellar birth and death.
This 10 h 05′ LRGB rendition resolves the mottled core, the feathered spiral structure, and a faint halo sprinkled with more distant background galaxies.

Salem USA
Back in November myself and Karen went to a cemetery in Salam MA USA and we created this image together.
How would you like your life to be remembered when you are gone? How would you feel if someone found your abandoned house and what would your items say about your life?
Deep in the Welsh countryside, hidden amongst the trees lies this house frozen in time, piled to the high with belongings of its former occupants. As I carefully looked through the items, it took me back to the lives of the old woman who seemingly had been widowed by her husband, an old photo of a greying lady with her friends, but no man by her side. Even older photos in black and white of a young solder and then a touching find. A wedding card to a Dick and Emily from Stuart and Joyce and then next to it a golden wedding anniversary card from the very same people 50 years later. It gave me a huge sense of melancholy and happiness, a couple who had lived a lifetime together for over 50 years, but then the pain one of them must have felt living in this lonesome country house without their lifetime lover.
Further exploration relieved segments of their past lives, gas masks, letters, birthday cards, the lady was clearly a very fashionable lady who cared for her appearance, with a bedroom full of makeup, perfume, elegant clothing. As we left the house as we found it, the memories to continue to shy away in the darkness, I felt a sense of happiness that someone had got to interact with their beautiful lives once more.
