One day on our trip to Italy we visited the abandoned island of Poveglia near Venice. A place of tragedy and death. For a long time it was used as a hospital and quarantine station for plague victims and converted into an asylum for the mentally ill and for long time care.

These days its hard to find Italians who will take you to the island, it is patrolled occasionally by police boats and with many people being superstitious they believe the island is haunted.

I managed to persuade a lovely lady to drop us of by boat and return for us 6 hours later (that was a lot of trust or it would have been a long swim back again).

Walking around the massive undergrowth on my own was surreal, but peaceful at the same time. Natures song all around me it was hard to imagine the amount of death that had happened on this tiny island. As i walked across the connecting bridge to the burning grounds, I was remained of the spine chilling stories of this mass burning site where so many had been burned.

Llanddwyn Island is named after St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Legend has it that she was spurned by a prince and retreated heartbroken to the island. There she was granted three wishes, and asked to be given the power to grant the wishes of true lovers.

“Outside the window, there slides past that unimaginable and deserted vastness where night is coming on, the sun declining in ghastly blood-streaked splendour like a public execution across, it would seem, half a continent, where live only bears and shooting stars and the wolves who lap congealing ice from water that holds within it the entire sky. All white with snow as if under dustsheets, as if laid away eternally as soon as brought back from the shop, never to be used or touched. Horrors! And, as on a cyclorama, this unnatural spectacle rolls past at twenty-odd miles an hour in a tidy frame of lace curtains only a little the worse for soot and drapes of a heavy velvet of dark, dusty blue.” - Angela Carter

Cant 100% remeber where this photo was taken, but it was in Pripyat, a town completly abandoned due to the nuclear disater in Chernobyl, Ukraine 1986. One that caused death, destruction and a fallout of illness and despair for many years after.

A humbling journey, full of many emotions.

This weekend I made a trip to Bulgaria with 5 other friends Darren, Richie, James, Daniel, Adam to return to the mountain of Buzludzha to photograph the beautiful Buzludha, a former communist monument at 1441 metres high. The monument was built in 1981 but has fallen into disrepair and is no longer looked after by the Bulgarian government.

We spent three days at the monument and each day would bring a change in climate. On day two over night it tipped down with snow and we woke to a foot of it, it made the km walk to the top of the mountain a test of endurance to reach the monument of the second day. My wonderful friends helped me carry costumes up the mountain so I could photograph Dorina inside. It poured down with rain, lightning strikes around us and below freezing conditions. It was the best feeling to finally get back to the hostel and rest infant of the fire.

I first photographed the monument in 2012 and it became the cover of my book Soviet Ghosts. It was amazing to re visit and join Nicola and Jonathan who had first taken me there and also Dorina (who came with Ivan her boyfriend) who meet up with us for two of the days so I could photograph her in the monument of my Underworld series.

The whole weekend was an incredible experience, full of fun, laughs, determination and in some times pain from hiking up a mountain in knee deep snow. It is an experience surrounded by friends that I will never forget.

The beauty of the universe overwhelms me 🌌

This star-studded image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows the heart of the globular cluster NGC 6638 in the constellation Sagittarius. The star-strewn observation highlights the density of stars at the heart of globular clusters, which are stable, tightly bound groups of tens of thousands to millions of stars. To capture the data in this image, Hubble used two of its cutting-edge astronomical instruments: Wide Field Camera 3 and the Advanced Camera for Surveys.

Hubble revolutionized the study of globular clusters. The distortion caused by Earth’s atmosphere makes it nearly impossible to clearly distinguish stars in the cores of globular clusters with ground-based telescopes. Orbiting some 340 miles (550 km) above Earth, Hubble can study what kind of stars make up globular clusters, how they evolve, and the role of gravity in these dense systems without Earth’s atmosphere posing a problem.

The NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope will further our understanding of globular clusters by peering into their star-studded interiors. Webb observes at infrared wavelengths, providing unique information about cluster stars that will complement Hubble’s incredible views.

This was taken on day two of our trip to Bulgaria, within a night it went from a tiny dusting of snow on the peak of the mountain to a whole foot of snow. We awoke to a a beautiful cold white landscape which was absolutly beautiul.

Half of us got into the 4x4 and made our way to the peak. With a km still left to walk to the Buzluzdha monument that was right at the top we proceeded to hike in knee deep snow carrying cameras bags and costumes and lights. It was a test of endurace, by now rain had begun and it drenched us in cold winds from all sides, finally out of breathe we made it inside. But it wasnt a relief, there were still howling winds inside and rain poured from the falling apart roof. A few times lightening clapped and part of the ceiling fell to the ground.

The poor model Dorina faced a freezing couple fo hours to continue with the photoshoot. She was truely amazing as myself and Nicola got her into the stunning costimes of Agnieszka Osipa, I set up my light and shot it as quickly as humanley possible. I had help from the others at all stages to help it go as quickly as possible. After the shot, we wrapped her in as many blankets as possible. Tired, cold and drenched we made our way back down the mountain, the rain finally stopped and when we reached the 4x4 we decided to try and fit all 10 of us inside, with some of the guys hanging out the doors and others on the bumper, we drove slowly back to our hostel to warm up. It was the hardest shoot I have done to date for my Underworld series, but completly worth it.

Tower Bridge (built 1886-1894) is a combined bascule and suspension bridge in London, England, over the River Thames. It is close to the Tower of London, from which it takes its name.

It has become an iconic symbol of London. The bridge consists of two towers tied together at the upper level by means of two horizontal walkways, designed to withstand the horizontal forces exerted by the suspended sections of the bridge on the landward sides of the towers. The vertical component of the forces in the suspended sections and the vertical reactions of the two walkways are carried by the two robust towers. The bascule pivots and operating machinery are housed in the base of each tower. The bridge's present colour scheme dates from 1977, when it was painted red, white and blue for the Queen Elizabeth II's silver jubilee. Originally it was painted a mid greenish-blue colour.

Tower Bridge is sometimes mistakenly referred to as London Bridge, which is the next bridge upstream.

Deep within the constellation Monoceros, the Rosette Nebula blazes as a cosmic forge, where gravity and radiation sculpt vast towers of gas and dust. This central region is where stars ignite, forging the elements that may one day become new worlds.

This two-panel mosaic captures the nebula’s elaborate core, where the young, searing-hot stars of NGC 2244 blaze through the surrounding clouds, shaping an ever-evolving masterpiece. Every arc and filament in this celestial furnace tells the story of the universe’s endless cycle - destruction, rebirth, and the birth of light itself.

Approximately 11,000 years ago, a massive star in the constellation Vela ended its life in a spectacular supernova explosion, creating the Vela Supernova Remnant. This expanding debris cloud, located about 800 light-years away, spans over 100 light-years and is a prominent feature in the southern sky. The explosion also resulted in the formation of the Vela Pulsar, an incredibly dense, rapidly rotating neutron star that emits beams of radiation detectable across the electromagnetic spectrum. The Vela Supernova Remnant is likely embedded within the larger and older Gum Nebula, adding to the complexity and beauty of this celestial region.
