And, like a dying lady lean and pale,
Who totters forth, wrapp'd in a gauzy veil,
Out of her chamber, led by the insane
And feeble wanderings of her fading brain,
The moon arose up in the murky east
A white and shapeless mass.
Art thou pale for weariness
Of climbing heaven and gazing on the earth,
Wandering companionless
Among the stars that have a different birth,
And ever changing, like a joyless eye
That finds no object worth its constancy?” Percy Bysshe Shelley

An abandoned farm house in Wales, drowned in darkness and eternal night by the boards solidily bolted to the wondows. Never again will this piano play, or the clock chime, swallowed up by a pit of darkness, with only a torch to shine light on it once again.

Abandoned house in Luxembourg
Being in this house, I felt so much melancholy, it was clear it had been a house were very elderly people had been living, but after a very long life of happiness and family. To see it so frozen in time, unloved and silent felt strange and eerie.

So I was walking home from work today and I saw Max performing. I carried on walking despite really wanting to take his photo. I stopped and summoned up the courage to ask him if I could take a portrait. He was more than happy to and I tipped him in the end. This is a real milestone for me in the project as this is the first time I have actually approached a complete stranger to ask if I could take their picture. I only wish I had my M3 and EFM 22mm but hey next time yeah?
Max...keep playing those sweet melodies...
We visited all 7 of the magnificent 7 cemeteries in London. Made up of Kensal Green, West Norwood, Highgate, Abney Park, Nunhead, Brompton and Tower Hamlets.
They were built to try and fight the overcrowding of cemeteries in the 1800's as decaying body matter was getting into the water streams and causing epidemics. The coffins in this huge Victorian crypt were by law to be made of lead inside.

“Given enough time, you could convince yourself that loneliness was something better, that it was solitude, the ideal condition for reflection, even a kind of freedom.
Once you were thus convinced, you were foolish to open the door and let anyone in, not all the way in. You risked the hard-won equilibrium, that tranquility that you called peace” - Dean Koontz

It took me days to reach Sagada, I travelled by bus and jeepney to the far north of the Philippines, to an almost mystical place called Sagada. I stayed in a wooden hut, its was an incredible experience. My aim was to see these hanging coffins, which I explored with some Iranians I had meet, they were pretty awesome, most defiantly worth the trip to see them.
“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” Mark Twain
I visited this unique cemetery, perched on a boat as it powered toward an island covered in undergrowth, it had begun to spit with rain as the island came into view. I was sat next to a couple how had visited Bali many years, but were on the look for something different that they had not witnessed before and someone had told them about this unique island, and tourists are welcome to visit in the way anyone would visit a normal cemetery.
Here relatives leave the bodies of their loved ones in the open under bamboo cages on the edge of the lake to decay naturally. In this Balinese village of Trunyan, the dead are not buried.
Under a large Taru Menyan tree which allows a pleasant smell to waft into the air so the smell of death was not so baring in this space.
As you all probably know, the purpose of my travels are to photograph a book 'Dark Tourism' which is documenting sites around the world associated with death and tragedy.
People all deal with death on different levels and I understand this completely. Brought up in the western world death it is hidden from society and we are taught to be repulsed by dead bodies. It is very different in a lot of countries outside of the western world, they do not treat death in the same way and different cultures have various rituals for death
Since as long as I can remember I have had this fascination with death. It may seem morbid, disgusting or weird for many people and I understand not everyone feels similarly about everything in life.
My photos lean towards showing beauty in darkness, death and decay. I compose and edit my photos in an aesthetically pleasing to the eye way. Often ending with images that can be called beautiful despite their subject. I don't just document the things I see I try to make them carry emotion and have a strong impact on the viewer.
Until that day I had not seen a dead body, for as long as I can remember I have wanted to, a fascination really and genuine want to experience this ending moment of a humans life. To me this is not weird or gross and despite the sadness of that persons passing, death is apart of the cycle of life and for me it is a special thing. I believe everyone has a soul and at death it departs from the body and goes elsewhere. What is left is the 'machine' that allowed the souls story to live on this earth. I don't see a corpse as a thing that should repulse you, I think it is beautiful. I've always believed this, people would tell me again and again my thoughts would change when I finally saw a body, but my thoughts are still the same. Again people tell me I will think different when I see a body in not such peaceful state but I know I will always find the beauty in darkness, death, emotion and decay, it is something inside me.
We arrived just the three of us and crept up the stone steps into the glowing green trees. First I saw rows of skulls on the top of a wall, moss growing all around, a beautiful twisting tree to the right, then I turned to see the cages, I walked up to them peering inside, they contained mainly bones and skulls and clothing. Then I saw it a cage made from brand new bamboo, I knew what was inside would be a new body. I took a deep breathe and wandered close, everyone had gone at this point, I was alone experiencing this moment. The other couple had left a while ago, the girl had been repulsed and there were a lot of flys and bugs there which she didn't find pleasant.
Inside the bamboo cage the body was fresh, a corpse inside only a day or two old. Most people would approach with caution but I was leaning over the cage, it was hard to stand as foliage was all around and the next cage close to this one, I had to stop myself from falling straight on top of him.
I said a prayer and leant down close to his face just inches away, flys were on his face, he looked peaceful like he was sleeping. I just stared I couldn't take my eyes away, I felt over whelmed at the experience of witnessing death in its truest form, for his loved ones his death will bring sadness and pain, but the fact he had been displayed this way for even tourists to come and take pictures, showed they too were at comfort with his body being here in this way. For me it took me on a spiritual journey, I did not cry as I have done at a lot of the tragic sites I have been to. I felt sadness for the people he had left behind but he had lived his story and now his soul and energy is free to where it may shall go next.
And so my first experience seeing a corpse was a beautiful one, calming, with trees and bird song all around me. The driver of the boat was calling to me to come back he didn't speak English I played ignorant for a while so I could just stand in that place a little more and reflect. So many people that told me death is not a beautiful thing are welcome to their opinions but for me that body was like a story book and what ever had happened in his life will be told through the photos and memories of his loved ones. His body will turn to dust and his soul will escape.

“Those candle flames were like the lives of men. So fragile. So deadly. Left alone, they lit and warmed. Let run rampant, they would destroy the very things they were meant to illuminate. “At such times the universe gets a little closer to us. They are strange times, times of beginnings and endings. Dangerous and powerful. And we feel it even if we don't know what it is. The Underwater Ballroom
Since visiting the ballroom in 2012 the owners have redeveloped the estate and have moved in, how lucky for them that that this ballroom is now in their back garden, I feel lucky to have seen it while I did as it is no longer abandoned these photo's I feel will immortalise it forever for those that never got to see inside.
It was late in 2012 at 4.30am we drove to the ballroom, all the way I kept thinking it was the stuff made from fairytales, I wasn’t even sure if it could actually even exist, an underwater ballroom, lying deep beneath a lake on an abandoned estate, built in Victorian times. You cant get to the ballroom by land as we would never break an enter any building and the door to the hut that takes you to the ballroom is locked and alarmed, it left no option but to make it across the lake to an island where the door was open, in the pitch black we made it through the trees and to the lake bank where we blew up a boat, and rowed towards the island.
Soon we were inside the ballroom, being underneath water felt strange like being in one of those underwater aquariums or a glass bottom boat, but nothing really could prepare you for being in a room, where the entire ceiling is made from thick glass and nothing but water above you, a long tear shaped corridor connected to a spiral staircase which I believe takes you to hut which is the entrance from the outside. It was truly the stuff from fairytales. The sun started to come up and light came through the glass for the first time, despite the algae that had obviously been growing for years, it looked very beautiful, the whole room glowed green, we photographed for an hour or two before decided to make our exit, seeing things like this is just so special and I cant believe how lucky I am to have such incredible experiences as this.
This photo is from a recent re visit to the ballroom, before we found out it is now owned

Llyn Ogwen is a lake in north-west Wales. It lies alongside the A5 road between two mountain ranges of Snowdonia, the Carneddau and the Glyderau.
Llyn Ogwen lies at a height of about 310 metres above sea level and has an area of 78 acres, but is a very shallow lake, with a maximum depth of only a little over 3 metres. It is fed by a number of streams from the slopes of the mountains which surround it, which include Tryfan and Pen yr Ole Wen.
The lake is popular with anglers and is said to contain excellent trout.
