Part IX of set Passenger seat {Beautiful Sabah}. I am posting these drive-by images every weekend. I have marked the location on the map, but this is just an estimate.
Passenger seat view.... This photo was taken on the way to Keningau, using a new road which cuts the distance by half but it is too steep for small cars. My friend's car, a 6-month old Honda Accord 2.4V, stalled at the last peak. It just refused to go further in "normal Drive" mode. I had better comfort in a 4.6 L turbo-charged Toyota "Ninja", perfect for this type of terrain.
This route is less populated as the terrain is very hilly. This is the Croker Range, and we were basically travelling along its slopes. The average altitude is 1,800m above sea level. (That's right, about 5,400 feet). This is mainly agricultural land... paddy, vegetables, rubber, oil palm and previously, it was a timber area.
Keningau, our destination, is the largest town in the interior, about 130km from Kota Kinabalu. At this point, we were making a 'pit-stop' at one of the few roadside canteens. You can see half of our convoy of four cars in this photo. The owner of the canteen collects RM0.20 for the use of the toilet. :-))) (USD1 = RM3.60)

The Rainforest Coast of British Columbia encompasses the largest remaining intact temperate rainforest in the world. While it is often the beauty of BC’s coastal rainforests which enthrall visitors from throughout the world, it is the productiveness of these forests that intrigue scientists. BC's coastal rainforests feature the highest biomass (the total amount or mass of organisms in a given area) per hectare of any ecosystem on earth. Trees here can often live more than 1,000 years, reaching hundreds of feet into the air, with diameters exceeding 9.4m.
Coastal rainforests provide critical habitat for incredibly varied populations of animals. Well-known species include grizzly bears, eagles, and the rare Kermode or Spirit bear, an unusual snow-white variation of the black bear.
The coastal rainforests are among the rarest and most productive ecosystems on the planet; they are also disappearing before we know almost anything about them. It’s as if we are burning the library before we have read the books. Only in the last 10 years have scientists begun to learn about the fragile system of interrelationships that makes up the beautiful web of life in these “green cathedrals”. In the meantime salmon, which our fisheries as well as a multitude of other animals depend upon, are disappearing forever along with many other species that can live only in coastal rainforests.
The temperate rainforest is very rare, originally covering less than 0.2% of the earth's land surface. Now, over one half of that limited original temperate rainforest has been logged and altered; of that which remains worldwide, over one quarter is found on BC’s coast.

I’ve been experimenting with my new Insta360 ONE camera. Verdict so far: image quality decent for a point-and-shoot, lacks a bracketing function, and the Bluetooth link with my iPad is very short-range (so much so that getting out of the picture can be problematical.) On the plus side, it only takes a minute or two to take a 360° panorama rather than 5-8 minutes with a nodal head.
This High Dynamic Range 360° panorama was tone-mapped from three bracketed 360° photographs with Photomatix, straightened with PTGUI Pro, processed in Color Efex, and touched up in Affinity Photo and Aperture.

The Skylark IX is a survivor of the Dunkirk evacuation where she was one of the little ships helping to repatriated the Allied soldiers. She was found sunken in a Scottish Loch and was recently moved to the Scottish Maritime Museum at Irvine for refurbishment . Sadly not much progress so far.

A statue of Danish King Christian IX handing over Iceland's first constitution in 1874, Stjornarradid, Reykjavik with the Harpa Centre in the background. Following a constitutional referendum between 20 and 23 May 1944, Iceland formally became an independent republic on 17 June 1944. Since Denmark was still occupied by Germany, many Danes felt offended that the step should have been taken at the time. Still, the King of Denmark, Christian X, sent a message of congratulations to the Icelandic people.

From the tomb of Ramses IX, this figure is carved from sycomore fig and represents the king wearing the nemes headdress. The surface of this statue was finished using less costly materials than that of Ramses I, black paint took the place of resin, and polychrome paint was applied instead of gold leaf, the eyes and eyebrows were carved directly from the wood, instead of being inlaid.

Model of the Blox building, a cultural centre and gathering point, including the exhibitions of Danish Architecture Center, DAC. It houses a fitness center, a public playground, rental flats, a café, a restaurant and a bookshop. Underneath the building is a fully automated 350-space public car park. Built and funded by the philanthropic association Realdania.

After the very successful Internacional LightArt congress in Oviedo we went to Barro to swim, talk until early hours in the morning and of course light paint some of the incredible sights in this paradise. Very little sleep and a lot of air conditioning made me catch a cold but nothing could diminish the amount of fun I had.
This experience is going to be engraved in my memory as one of the best I ever had. Thank you Frodo, Candela, Dana, Vincent, Darren, Jordan, Ivan, Chin for such an awesome stay at Barro. Also a very big thank you to Cisco, Will, Renaud, Felipe and everyone who was in Oviedo for being so supportive. My workshop wouldn't have been possible without your help.
