The intricated texture of a small dry sponge. It has shiny particles that in the light look like little gems that can only be seen with a macro lens.

The church contains over 7500 square meters of mosaics, more than any other church in the world. The intricately detailed mosaics depict biblical scenes and figures, with the fine patterned borders setting off each picture. An elaborate shrine was constructed on the exact place of the Tsar Alexander's death, garnished with topaz, lazurite and other semi-precious stones.

The interior was designed by some of the most celebrated Russian artists of the day, including Victor Vasnetsov, Mikhail Nesterov and Mikhail Vrubel.

The story of autumn?... Will you tell me about the leaves that dance? (and the girl remembered how she imagined the leaves dancing in the sunset)

Of course I will... and of clouds that bring rain and cold... (whispered the wind)

And then we go back to the story of the old lady? (asked the little girl)

Hahaha... that's the same story... (laughed the wind)

It has clouds, it has rain and dancing leaves... and mist... (whispered more the wind)...

Mist? What is mist?... (asked the curious girl)... It sounds so mysterious... (continued the girl)

One summer morning after a heavy dew fell overnight, I spotted this intricate spider web. It was woven on and around some rhododendron leaves. The first thing I thought of was that the web and leaves were shaped just like a sailboat.

Well-camouflaged chickenlike bird. Intricately patterned plumage varies from cold gray to rich reddish-brown. Look for relatively long, squared tail with dark band near the tip, bold barring on the sides, and small pointed crest. Typically shy and difficult to see well. Often flushed from the forest floor, exploding into the air with a startling burst of wingbeats and then gliding down towards the next hiding place. Sometimes ventures onto roadsides to pick up grit. In spring, males beat their wings to produce a distinctive low-pitched drumming sound. Widespread and locally fairly common across northern North America, from the Appalachians to Alaska. Especially fond of forested areas with dense understory and secondary growth. (eBird)

My husband saw this well-camouflaged bird standing quietly in the grasses beside the trail. The bird waited patiently for us to go away, but when it became evident that we were interested in him, he ducked under the log and walked away. Shortly after, we experienced the adrenaline-pumping explosion of a second grouse from the other side of the trail. Quite a shock. It was wonderful to see this handsome bird, though. Usually, my year bird tick is based solely on his almost sub-sonic drumming during the spring.

One of the two bronze statues of phoenixes outside the Hall of Benevolence and Longevity at the Summer Palace in Beijing, China. One of the dragon bronzes is in the distance. The phoenixes (representing the female) were placed between the dragons (representing the male) because of the Empress Dowager Cixi (the original Dragon Lady) asserting her power over China instead of the Emperor.

The Summer Palace, is a vast ensemble of lakes, gardens and palaces in Beijing. It was an imperial garden in the Qing Dynasty. Mainly dominated by Longevity Hill and Kunming Lake, it covers an expanse of 2.9 square kilometres, three-quarters of which is water. Longevity Hill is about 60 m high and has many buildings positioned in sequence. The front hill is rich with splendid halls and pavilions, while the back hill, in sharp contrast, is quiet with natural beauty. The central Kunming Lake, covering 2.2 square kilometres, was entirely man-made and the excavated soil was used to build Longevity Hill. In December 1998, UNESCO included the Summer Palace on its World Heritage List. 1494

The Captain Cook Memorial, incorporating the Water Jet and Globe, was constructed by the Commonwealth Government to commemorate the Bicentenary of Captain James Cook's first sighting of the east coast of Australia. The Memorial was officially inaugurated on 25 April 1970 by Queen Elizabeth II. Located in the Central Basin of Lake Burley Griffin, directly in front of the National Capital Exhibition at Regatta Point, the Captain Cook Memorial Jet sends water to a maximum height of 152 metres, pumping it from, and returning it to, the lake. The exit velocity of water leaving the nozzle is 260 kilometres an hour. About six tonnes of water is in the air at any one moment when the main nozzle is in use, discharging 500 litres per second. 11729
