Interplanetary Travel
By the time this image reaches your hands, I will have traveled a long way in outer space. According to my calculations, 26 days will have passed according to world time. I'm on my way to the target planet. During the trip, I also get the opportunity to observe nearby planets. The next photo, I think, will be published a few days after the first photo. I will continue to give you information from my interplanetary travel. Stay tuned...

It is always reassuring to catch that first familiar glimpse of home after a great adventure, but for our space-faring satellites the return visit is brief and of a practical nature: to use the planet’s immense gravity to sling it onto a new trajectory.
These ‘gravity assists’ are fleeting encounters, but enough to change the spacecraft’s speed and direction such that it can eventually enter orbit around another world.
This delicate view of Earth was captured in 2007 on the second of three Earth flybys made by ESA’s comet-chasing Rosetta spacecraft on its ten year journey to Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The spacecraft also got a boost from Mars to set it on course with its destination.
The first ever interplanetary gravity slingshot took place on 5 February 1974, when NASA’s Mariner 10 flew past Venus en route to flybys of Mercury. The ESA-JAXA BepiColombo mission – whose name is inherited from Giuseppe Colombo who originally proposed to NASA the interplanetary trajectories that would allow Mariner-10 multiple Mercury flybys by using gravity assists at Venus – will make nine flybys of Earth, Venus and Mercury to reach the innermost planet and eventually enter orbit about it.
Similarly, ESA’s upcoming Solar Orbiter mission will use Venus gravity assists to change its inclination to get a better look at the Sun’s poles. And ESA’s Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer will first dive into the inner Solar System to use Earth, Venus and Mars to set course for the gas giant Jupiter.
But Earth remains home to a fleet of satellites busy performing a number of different activities from orbit: while some are peering far away into the cosmos, our Earth Observation missions are watching diligently over our precious planet, taking its ‘pulse’ and helping us to better understand how to care for it. The Sun-illuminated crescent seen around Antarctica in this beautiful image certainly evokes a feeling of fragility and reminds us of our special place in space.
The image was taken by the OSIRIS camera on Rosetta about two hours before closest approach during the 13 November 2007 flyby, when the spacecraft was 75 000 km from Earth. The mission went on to become the first to rendezvous with and land on a comet, and the first to follow and study a comet on its orbit around the Sun.

Here it is. I gave up on the editing.
Manned interplanetary exploration vessel "Melancholy Emperor". Four ion thrusters, two airlocks (near the center), two docking ports (at the tips of the prongs) and backup experimental solar panels that double as IR-emitters in case of overheating. Able to safely leave Earth orbit due to fusion reactor generating it's own magnetic field and shielding it from radiation. The boom between the prongs holds external experiments which can be handled with manipulator arms.

...but then, in 1977 an article published in the Providence Journal written by journalist Steve Smith, speculated that 3:47 EST could actually be a release by a secretly reunited Beatles recording under a pseudonym, leading to widespread rumours. These rumours were fueled by a number of factors, including the fact that their album was released by Capitol Records (also the Beatles' label), the lack of artist and producer credits or photographs in the album packaging, Klaatu's avoidance of public performances, and the fact that the group's vocal and musical style was reminiscent of the Beatles. The rumors turned into a global phenomenon with Beatles fans being fed "clues" by radio stations and print media alike. Subsequent to the Beatles rumor, the songs "Sub-Rosa Subway" and "Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft" became minor hits for Klaatu in 1977.

A New Planet - A New Adventure
Interplanetary Travel
Hello again after a long break.
I had to stay away from you for a while due to an illness I had while traveling in outer space. My health is good right now. While my space travel was continuing, I came across a planet that I had not noticed before. I guess I must have stumbled upon its dark side when I passed by it before. However, interestingly, my radar devices had not detected this planet before. I'm very curious as to what is causing this situation. I'm taking a break from my trip again to explore a new planet. For a while, this newly discovered planet will host me. I do not yet know how long I will be on this planet. According to the measurement results, the atmosphere of the planet is quite thick. So I'm going to enter the planet's atmosphere on a fairly horizontal course. After landing on the surface and completing my preparations, I will share the first photo with you.
On this new discovery, stay tuned.

Another view of the stunning spiral staircase located in the new extension to the Usher Hall in Edinburgh.
Once again, this has involved processing the same RAW file at several different exposures and colour temperatures...then combining them all via layer masks.
What could be simpler? ;-)
My thanks are due to Emma Patterson and Victoria Fuller from the Usher Hall, for giving me permission to photograph.

"I am a passenger
And I ride and I ride
I ride through the city's backsides
I see the stars come out of the sky
Yeah, they're bright in a hollow sky
You know it looks so good tonight
I am the passenger
I stay under glass
I look through my window so bright
I see the stars come out tonight
I see the bright and hollow sky
Over the city's ripping sky
And everything looks good tonight
[Chorus]
Singin' la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
Get into the car
We'll be the passenger
We'll ride through the city tonight
We'll see the city's ripped backsides
We'll see the bright and hollow sky
We'll see the stars that shine so bright
The sky was made for us tonight
Oh, the passenger
How, how he rides
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He looks through his window
What does he see?
He sees the sight of hollow sky
He sees the stars come out tonight
He sees the city's ripped backsides
He sees the winding ocean drive
And everything was made for you and me
All of it was made for you and me
'Cause it just belongs to you and me
So let's take a ride and see what's mine
[Chorus]
Singin' la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
Oh, the passenger
He rides and he rides
He sees things from under glass
He looks through his window's eye
He sees the things he knows are his
He sees the bright and hollow sky
He sees the city asleep at night
He sees the stars are out tonight
And all of it is yours and mine
And all of it is yours and mine
So let's ride and ride and ride and ride
[Chorus]
Singin' la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la
Singin' la la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la
La la la la la la la la la la"

"This ship is much too elegant to see its final days in the slimy hands of the Hutts!!" - Varek Marr
Originally commissioned by a Quarren syndicate on Trask, Boonta Ziringa was designed as a salvage vessel, but after a violent power shift in the syndicate, the ship was acquired by the Hutts as compensation for a lost shipment. The Hutts transferred it to Tatooine, where it was used as a transport barge in service of the Hutt kajidic Desilijic during the Jabba rule. In the chaos following Jabba's demise, Boonta Ziringa was bought from the Jawas by a native Tatooine entrepreneur named Varek Marr. When Boba Fett assumed control over Tatooine and ushered in a long-awaited period of stability, Varek offered Boba his services. Boonta Ziringa sailed the Dune Sea for many decades, until it suddenly disappeared from Tatooine planetary records.
When travelling across the planet surface, Boonta Ziringa would use the resource-efficient repulsorlift drives to stay afloat. Its massive sail would catch the hot winds of the Jundland Wastes, propelling the vessel at breakneck speeds with minimal fuel consumption.
The barge could support a small crew for several weeks, and its modular cargo holds were perfectly suited for smuggling goods in the dry Tatooine environment. When stationary, the sails would fold down to make its profile smaller. Boonta Ziringa was capable of interplanetary travel, a the cost of significantly reduced cargo capacity.

This is my entry for SHIPtember this year. It’s my first-ever digital SHIP, built and rendered with Bricklink Studio. It is (obviously) heavily inspired by this concept art by John Wallin Liberto, made for the movie The Creator. When I saw his drawing, it was love at first sight — I knew I had to build my own version!
I had major issues with the diagonal decals on the sails. I learned that PartDesigner is extremely bad at handling decals on large imported objects, so I had to apply them to small groups and individual elements instead. It was mind-numbingly tedious, but totally worth it! :)
During the build process, my brain usually starts visualizing the final result. I saw this ship swooshing across a desert landscape like the Star Wars planet Tatooine. Once that image took hold, I couldn’t let it go — I had to place this ship into a Star Wars setting.

Sometimes messing around with blend modes and a hue/saturation adjustment can yield some imaginative interplanetary discoveries. ;-)
Zodiacal light appears as a tilted faint white band in the night sky (after sunset in Winter/Spring and before sunrise in Autumn). Zodiacal light is the reflection of sunlight from microscopic interplanetary dust particles lying on the ecliptic (plane of the Earth's orbit around the Sun). Jupiter (brightest spot) and Saturn (lower right) are visible too and also in the Zodiacal light.

Interplanetary Travel
My last days on this planet. I am ending my search for life forms on this planet. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any trace of life. This is an abandoned planet. Just like the other planets I've visited. After I've done my final research, I'll have to prepare my spaceship for a new voyage. I'll post a few more photos from this planet. While floating in space, maybe we may have a communication problem for a while. When I set foot on a new planet, I'm sure I'll be able to reconnect. I will give you new information with the photo I will publish next. Some exciting facts about the planet I'm going to travel to. Stay tuned.

Venus, Mercury, and the Zodiacal Light. This was taken just before dawn on the Great Barrier Island, New Zealand. The island is a Dark Sky Sanctuary, and amazingly dark. Since the planets Venus and Mercury are closer to the sun than earth, you are looking sunward to see then. As a result the best dark times to see them are just before dawn or just after sunset. This was just before dawn. What caught my attention was how well the Zodiacal light showed up at this time. When seen just before dawn it’s called the “False Dawn”. It’s a faint diffuse roughly triangular light or glow that appears to extend from the sun along the zodiac, straddling the ecliptic. It is caused by sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust in the plane of the dolor system. (Wikipedia) I thought it showed up nicely here. Check out the labeled image as well. This is a stack of 10 images stacked in SLS, 23 mm, 15 sec., f/2.8, ISO 12,800. Many thanks to Carol @darkskysanctuary for guiding me there and drawing my attention to to planets that night. Carol, you are a great guide! Cheers, Wayne

NASA's Juno spacecraft will make its fourth flyby over Jupiter's mysterious cloud tops on Thursday, Feb. 2, at 4:57 a.m. PST (7:57 a.m. EST, 12:57 UTC).
At the time of closest approach (called perijove), Juno will be about 2,670 miles (4,300 kilometers) above the planet's cloud tops and traveling at a speed of about 129,000 mph (57.8 kilometers per second) relative to the gas giant. All of Juno's eight science instruments, including the Jovian Infrared Auroral Mapper (JIRAM) instrument, will be on and collecting data during the flyby.
"Tomorrow may be 'Groundhog Day' here on Earth, but it's never Groundhog Day when you are flying past Jupiter,” said Scott Bolton, principal investigator of Juno from the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio. "With every close flyby we are finding something new."
The Juno science team continues to analyze returns from previous flybys. Revelations include that Jupiter's magnetic fields and aurora are bigger and more powerful than originally thought and that the belts and zones that give the gas giant’s cloud top its distinctive look extend deep into the planet’s interior. Peer-reviewed papers with more in-depth science results from Juno’s first three flybys are expected to be published within the next few months. Also, JunoCam, the first interplanetary outreach camera, is now being guided with the assistance from the public -- people can participate by voting for what features on Jupiter should be imaged during each flyby.

The Interplanetary Expedition Alliance ship Vanguard. A hard sci-fi take on what a ship designed for intra-solar system travel might actually look like.
I wrote more about this model on The Brothers Brick.
ESA’s latest interplanetary mission, Juice, lifted off on an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s Spaceport in French 09:14 local time/14:14CEST on 14 April 2023 to begin its eight-year journey to Jupiter, where it will study in detail the gas giant planet’s three large ocean-bearing moons: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa.
Juice – Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer – is humankind’s next bold mission to the outer Solar System. This ambitious mission will characterise Ganymede, Callisto and Europa with a powerful suite of remote sensing, geophysical and in situ instruments to discover more about these compelling destinations as potential habitats for past or present life. Juice will monitor Jupiter’s complex magnetic, radiation and plasma environment in depth and its interplay with the moons, studying the Jupiter system as an archetype for gas giant systems across the Universe.
Following launch, Juice will embark on an eight-year journey to Jupiter, arriving in July 2031 with the aid of momentum and direction gained from four gravity-assist fly-bys of the Earth-Moon system, Venus and, twice, Earth.
Flight VA260 is the final Ariane 5 flight to carry an ESA mission to space.
