An abstraction that takes you out of this world...

A slice of scarlet sunrise for Sliders Sunday. The colour is pretty much as taken but with contrast punched up, it looks almost unworldly. I hope everyone has a wonderful week ahead.

Helios, Zenith, Horizon, Zenitar, Rubinar ... familiar words? These are the products of the Zenit plant. Krasnogorsk city, Moscow region. Russia.

The sculpture of a boy-photographer is located at the main entrance to the plant.

Сannot enter the territory of the plant without a pass. I climbed a hill and photographed part of the territory. Collage of two photos.

Books have been written about this plant, but I will try to tell you more shortly :)

On February 1, 1942, by order of the USSR People's Commissar of Armaments, a decision was made in Krasnogorsk on the vacated areas of the V.I. Lenin, evacuated in 1941 to Novosibirsk, to create a new enterprise - the State Union Optical Plant No. 393, later - the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant. At the same time, his specialization was determined - the development and manufacture of aerial photographic equipment and sighting devices, as well as photographic, film technology and scientific equipment. In 1944, the FS-2 specialized photo sniper became the first camera produced by the plant.

In 1946, the trademark of the enterprise was registered - the contour of the Dove prism refracting a beam of light. In the same year, the “Moscow-1” camera was released, intended for the consumer market.

By May 1, 1948, the first 50 units of a small-format camera were produced, which received the name "Sharp" in 1949. In the same year, 1949, industrial samples of the EM-3 electron microscope were manufactured at the plant.

In 1952, a small-format amateur SLR camera "Zenith" was launched into production, which gained wide popularity and became the ancestor of a whole generation of SLR cameras, which were improved every year.

In 1957, the AFA-39 camera was the first in the world to survey the Earth's surface from a height of 200 km.

In 1959, the far side of the moon was photographed for the first time in world practice. The photographic equipment AFA-E1, created by the plant, was installed on the interplanetary automatic station.

On April 12, 1961, the filming of the launch of the Vostok spacecraft with Yuri Gagarin on board was carried out using the KT-50 cinema theodolite developed by the plant.

Krasnogorsk Plant named after S.A. Zvereva "is one of the leading enterprises in Russia in the field of optical and optoelectronic instrumentation, which has unique long-term experience and has been providing development, testing and serial production of devices and systems for various applications for decades.

During its existence, the enterprise has solved a number of tasks of national importance, produced products that have no analogues not only in the country, but also in the world. An aerial camera designed at the plant was the first in the world to photograph the far side of the Moon, and the first high-precision astronomical installations for photographing artificial satellites and planets were manufactured.

For many years the company has been one of the largest developers and manufacturers of cameras for amateur photography.

Today the company carries out technical re-equipment and modernization of production, purchases new technological equipment to optimize work processes and improve the quality of products, as well as introduces new technologies and develops promising products for research, industry, construction, healthcare, cameras, recreation and tourism.

I felt like I had stepped out of an interplanetary spaceship onto another world instead of out of a motor coach in Iceland! The landscape was barren and steam was rising up to reach the dark clouds. “The Námafjall Geothermal Area is located in Northeast Iceland, on the east side of Lake Mývatn.

At this area, also known as Hverir, you will see many smoking fumaroles and boiling mud pots, surrounded by sulphur crystals of many different colours. This sulphur gives the area an overwhelming smell of egg.

The soil in the area has little vegetation due to the acidity caused by these geothermal processes.”

It may be an old basalt quarry but in my mind it's something else. The world is full of amazing sights and there is always so much more to discover.

In the photo, we can contemplate an incredible night panorama, where various celestial phenomena are visible: the Magellanic Clouds, the arc of the Milky Way, the zodiacal light, the Andromeda Galaxy, Jupiter and the airglow.

The Magellanic Clouds, which appear as bright spots in the left side of the image, are two satellite galaxies of the Milky Way and contain billions of stars, nebulas, and star clusters. The Milky Way arch, in turn, is the bright band that crosses the image, formed by the light of stars and interstellar gas and dust.

The zodiacal light, which extends diagonally in the image, is the diffuse band of light caused by the reflection of sunlight on particles of dust in interplanetary space. The Andromeda Galaxy, one of the closest to the Milky Way, appears as a diffuse spot and contains billions of stars, being an important object for the study of the formation and evolution of galaxies.

Finally, the airglow is the reddish band of light that extends along the horizon in the image, caused by the emission of light by oxygen and nitrogen molecules in the high Earth's atmosphere.

This image is an invitation to marvel at the immensity of the universe and the beauty of its celestial phenomena. It is definitely a vision that inspires us to contemplate the universe and to seek to understand more and more the complexity and grandeur of the cosmos.

Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft is a song by Canadian rock band Klaatu, originally released in 1976 on their first album 3:47 EST. The song was played to open night-time transmission of the pirate radio station Radio Caroline back in the UK, that broadcast from 1964 until it eventually went off air in the 90's.

Toronto is culinary mecca and some restaurants went beyond and above to be different. We have food from Greece, Thailand, Vietnam, Tibet, like every major city, but I bet not too many have food from Mars. Last year they had to improvise as genuine ingredients were difficult to obtain. Mars closed its borders for all interplanetary traffic, so first time since 1951 they had to go with Earth eggs, bacon and toast. The Martians opened the restaurant soon after they landed in Rosewell (Area 51).

A late shot for the 'oil' theme. (I was poorly last week after my covid jab) I've done these oil and water shots a few times but today had difficulties with the oil and its strange tendency of breaking up into tiny blobs rather giving the more usual perfect circles. I had to crop into this shot to get a few that weren't too bad.

On a plus point, I do like the colours.

Weekly alphabet challenge 'oil' theme. 41/52

The photo captures a view of the night sky over the Bolivia. 2 hours after sunset (elevation: 4020 m / 13190 feet). Canon EOS 60Da, 25 sec., Canon Lens EF16-35mm, f/2.8, ISO 6400, panorama of 20 images.

Because our eyes are less sensitive to color in low light conditions, a black and white photo more closely approximates what our eyes can see at night (compared to a color photo).

The black and white photography highlights the stark contrast between the dark night sky and the glowing band of the Milky Way. The Milky Way, a dense band of stars and interstellar dust, stretches across the sky in a white arc.

If you look closely, you can also see a faint, diffuse glow stretching up from the horizon. This is the Zodiacal Light, a ghostly band of light caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust particles in our solar system.

Taken together, the Milky Way and Zodiacal Light create a breathtaking scene that reminds us of the immense scale and beauty of the universe we inhabit. It is a testament to the power of nature and the wonders that can be discovered by simply looking up at the night sky.

The photo of the Milky Way and Zodiacal Light is an example of the beauty that can be found in the natural world. It is a reminder that there is always more to discover and explore, both here on Earth and beyond.

In this panoramic image, the cerrado sky reveals its spectacle in multiple acts. On the right, the majestic arc of the Milky Way dominates the scene, showcasing the galactic core in vibrant colors, with prominent pink nebulae and golden tones from billions of stars.

To the left, the sky takes on reddish and greenish hues thanks to airglow — a natural emission from the Earth's upper atmosphere, visible only in places with extremely low light pollution. Just below, the zodiacal light rises in a soft triangular glow, caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust along the Solar System’s plane.

On the ground, the sand tracks and vehicles point toward the vastness above, like explorers of time and space. A technical capture, but also an invitation to wonder: between distant galaxies and atmospheric particles, Jalapão’s sky reminds us that Earth still holds portals to the cosmos. 🌍🔭

Phase 2: The Great Expansion

Year 2075: After the impacts of meteorite fragments, the "Federation of Secular Nations" is formed, where state and religion are strictly separated. The contact with the Kantaki triggers a severe crisis for traditional religions while simultaneously offering an opportunity to escape the chaos on Earth. However, in most cases, the Kantaki demand high prices for transporting passengers and cargo—costs not everyone can afford.

Pioneers set out—some independently, but most in the service of wealthy patrons—allowing themselves to be transported by Kantaki ships to distant star systems. There, they venture out with interplanetary vessels, searching for worlds suitable for colonization. Within just thirty years, over two hundred extrasolar planets are settled, including Kabäa in the Epsilon Eridani system, as well as Tintiran and Xandor in the Mirlur system.

Emigration becomes an enormous business, creating new dependencies: those who wish to leave Earth but lack the necessary funds must commit to labor contracts, working off their debts on the colonies. The governments of the FSN increasingly struggle to maintain political, social, and economic control over events on Earth and the many colonial planets.

2080-2200: By the end of the 22nd century, over seven hundred planets have been colonized by humans, some more than five thousand light-years away. Earth's population has shrunk from eight billion to just over two billion. Contact has been established with additional extraterrestrial civilizations, including the Akuhaschi, Taruf, Horgh, Ganngan, Kariha, Quinqu, Grekki, and Pintaran.

The Horgh offer an alternative to Kantaki ships. Their jump ships can also traverse interstellar distances, but the shockwaves they generate are unbearable for humans. All attempts to develop independent faster-than-light travel technology and free humanity from reliance on the Kantaki and Horgh end in failure.

A multicultural global society emerges on Earth. However, political control over distant colonies proves nearly impossible, especially as long-overcome societal structures begin to reemerge on colonial worlds. On one side are the "Autarchs," who financed their own emigration and are wealthy enough to establish new lives. On the other are the "Subalterns," who are contractually bound to work off their debts.

One group stands outside this structure: the Kantaki pilots. It is discovered that certain humans possess the unique ability required for navigation in transspace, and the Kantaki eagerly recruit them. Kantaki pilots enjoy great prestige and are considered untouchable.

On many worlds, remnants of the La-Kimesh civilization are discovered, and xenoarchaeologists question why their galactic empire came to such a sudden end approximately twenty-two million years ago.

------------------------------------

........................................................................................................................................................The Earth is a grain of sand in the Ocean

Among countless worlds.

And we are not just Earthlings,

If we hear the interplanetary call.

And if the wings are for flight

Managed to straighten and take off —

There is no more perfect starship

The magnet of the earth to overcome....In order, all the planets

Any of us will call:

Time — Mercury,

Two — Venus,

Three — Earth,

Four - Mars.

Five — Jupiter,

Six — Saturn,

Seven is Uranus,

followed by Neptune.

He is the eighth in a row.

And then,

later, the ninth planet

Called Pluto.

The Milky Way cloud appears in detail over Morro dos Cabritos, a 900-meter-high mountain in the Vale dos Frades region, in Teresópolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This is a rural area categorized as class 3 on the Bortle scale.

The Bortle scale is a numerical rating system that assesses the darkness and visibility of the night sky. It consists of nine levels, ranging from Class 1 (the darkest skies) to Class 9 (severe light pollution). Each class on the scale describes specific characteristics and features of the sky.

In Bortle Class 3, the sky conditions exhibit relatively limited light pollution. Here are some notable features of a Bortle 3 sky:

Moderate Light Pollution: Bortle 3 skies experience some degree of light pollution, typically from nearby towns or cities. While not as severe as in more populated areas, the presence of artificial lighting affects the overall darkness and visibility of the sky.

Milky Way Visibility: In Bortle 3 skies, the Milky Way, our galaxy, is visible as a prominent band stretching across the sky. While it may not be as vivid and detailed as in darker sky conditions, the core of the Milky Way and its brighter sections can still be observed.

Good Star Clarity: Bortle 3 skies offer reasonably clear views of individual stars. While some fainter stars may be less visible due to light pollution, the overall brilliance and clarity of the stellar display remain impressive. Constellations and their brighter stars are easily identifiable.

Observable Nebulae and Galaxies: Deep-sky objects, such as nebulae and galaxies, can be observed in Bortle 3 skies. While the presence of light pollution may affect the visibility of fainter objects, brighter and more prominent nebulae and galaxies should still be visible. The details and structures of these celestial objects can be appreciated with the right equipment.

Zodiacal Light: Bortle 3 skies allow for occasional sightings of the zodiacal light. This faint glow appears as a pyramid-shaped illumination along the ecliptic and is caused by sunlight reflecting off interplanetary dust particles. In darker areas of the Bortle 3 zone, the zodiacal light may be more visible.

Meteor Shower Observations: Bortle 3 skies are suitable for observing meteor showers. While some light pollution may affect the visibility of faint meteors, brighter meteors and fireballs should still be visible. Clear nights during meteor showers can offer memorable viewing experiences.

Overall, Bortle 3 skies provide a relatively darker and clearer viewing environment compared to higher Bortle classes. Although some light pollution is present, stargazers and astronomers can still enjoy a range of celestial objects and phenomena, including the Milky Way, individual stars, nebulae, galaxies, zodiacal light, and meteor showers.

Story:

Captured in the heart of the Jalapão region, this panoramic nightscape reveals the raw beauty of Brazil’s Cerrado under a pristine Bortle 1 sky. Dominating the scene is the luminous arch of the Milky Way, stretching from one horizon to the other, its core glowing with interstellar dust, emission nebulae, and countless stars. The reddish tones near the galactic center are enhanced by the use of a modified sensor, revealing prominent H-alpha regions like the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae.

To the right, a striking column of Zodiacal Light rises—sunlight scattered by interplanetary dust—perfectly aligned with the ecliptic. Subtle green and red hues of airglow add a surreal touch to the lower sky, interacting with the warm tones of the dunes and the reflecting waters of the meandering stream. Buriti palms and native vegetation complete the composition, grounding this celestial spectacle in the unique landscape of the Brazilian savanna.

This image is not a blend but a multi-frame panorama, precisely captured to preserve the spatial relationships of both the terrestrial and astronomical elements. A technical and artistic tribute to one of the darkest skies in South America.
