Rakan statues at the Rokkaku-dō (Chōhō-ji) Temple in central Kyoto. Rakan are carved figures of monks, often executed with great individuality.

According to legend, Rokkaku-dō (official name Chōhō-ji) was founded in the 6th century CE, and it is famous as the birthplace of ikebana in Japan in the 15th century.

The title makes me think of a scene in Monty Python's "Life of Brian," when the throng of followers shout in unison "We are all individuals!" Except one person pipes up with "I'm not...." and is promptly shushed.

Europe, The Netherlands, Noord Brabant, Den Bosch, Design museum, 'Goth - designing darkness' exhibition (uncut)

The 'Goth – designing darkness' exhibition explores the dark side of the human mind and the human imagination & culture. The side that’s both fascinated and fearful of death, the occult and supernatural phenomena. That fascination has always been there. But in the middle of the 18th century, it came to the forefront due to the anxiety about the changing of society thru rapid urbanization and early industrialization. It was translated in funerary culture, painting and the plastic arts. It would later develop into the neurasthenia of the beginning of the 20th century. And literature brought us Mary Shelley (Frankenstein). In architecture Neo-Gothicism appeared too. It basically never went away. So it still inspires contemporary photography, cinema, video clips (Anton Corbijn), popular music (Siouxsie & the Banshees) and fashion. The exhibition offers an intriguing and eclectic historical overview. Displaying film clips featuring Bela Lugosi a.o. alongside Cuypers' neo-gothic architectural drawings.

Check it out and hurry, the exhibition closes on April 18.

This large model (beginning 20th century) shown here is informed by the fear of the urban with it high density and loss of individuality.

This is number 272 of the Museum album.

"we had individuality. we did as we pleased. we stayed up late. we dressed the way we wanted. i used to whiz down sunset boulevard in my open kissel, with several red chow dogs to match my hair. today, they're sensible and end up with better health. but we had more fun."

Macro Mondays was a group I really enjoyed in 2016. I liked many of the themes for their challenges to creativity. For this week's theme, "Redux 2016--My Favorite Theme of the Year" I wanted to go back to "One of these things (is not like the others)". I like that theme because it seems to celebrate individuality. I wanted to pair it with a theme I didn't get to do, so I chose "Hearts". I'm not sure I have an actual favorite, but here's to more Macro Mondays...

Along the Paseo de la Castellana, in Madrid, there are wonderful buildings. It is a young avenue, from the beginning of the 20th century. On both sides of the street there are notable buildings and numerous embassies. Among them we can mention the Museum of Natural Sciences, the Museum of Outdoor Sculpture, the School of Industrial Engineers, the Nuevos Ministerios complex, the AZCA financial complex, the Palacio de Congresos de Madrid, the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the towers Puerta Europa and the new five skyscrapers in the city Torres Business Area. But it still has a thousand and one details to enjoy on a pleasant walk along its sidewalks. For example, on the fence of a famous bank, we can see how living wood and cold metal intertwine, melting into an intense embrace that has lasted for decades. Two forces of nature so different, capable of representing individuality and union without canceling each other.

One of three photographic partial views of "Endlessly Repeating Twentieth Century Modernism", Josiah McElheny, 2007. Blown mirrored glass, mirrors, metal, wood, and electric lighting. Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Curator's description: "McElheny hand-blew the dozens of glass vessels in this perfect machined, mirrored box, basing them on 20th-century designs. Their glinting reflections reed in an infinitely repeating pattern. The work is inspired by an enclosed and completely reflective world of pure form imagined by architect Buckminster Fuller and sculptor Isamu Noguchi in 1929. By crafting a version of their idea, McElheny reveals what a world purged of human presence and individuality looks like. Though brimming with beautiful objects, it is a place apart, devoid of life."

As I recall, the box is square, maybe a cube, about 2m on a side, with windows all around, containing various arrangements of bottles, with the tallest maybe about 0.3m.

I wanted to create a bit of mystery and give the piano itself more character and individuality with the way I photographed it and processed it on the computer ... I linked a famous piece of piano music to it, the only classical piece I can play on a piano, but much slower ;)

Certain defects are necessary for the existence of individuality.

The man, whose individuality is clearly expressed here, plays a certain role in the New Testament (remember the coin with the emperor's face on one side and the name of God on the other?) but he was also instrumental in founding the Colonia Agrippina, Cologne, Germany. Previously unpublished shot from March 2019. Another example of that pink hair/green lips combination that I saw during that month in the city. Either a short-lived fashion or unexplained cyanosis. Don't get me wrong, I cherish individuality and more power to her, I just don't understand the combination from a colour aesthetic. In Conversation With: Toscha Seidel

"Studying with Professor Auer was a revelation. I had private lessons from him, and at the same time attended the classes at the Petrograd Conservatory. I should say that his great specialty, if one can use the word specialty in the case of so universal a master of teaching as the Professor, was bowing. In all violin playing the left hand, the finger hand, might be compared to a perfectly adjusted technical machine, one that needs to be kept well oiled to function properly. The right hand, the bow hand, is the direct opposite—it is the painter hand, the artist hand, its phrasing outlines the pictures of music; its nuances fill them with beauty of color. And while the Professor insisted as a matter of course on the absolute development of finger mechanics, he was an inspiration as regards the right manipulation of the bow, and its use as a medium of interpretation. And he made his pupils think. Often, when I played a passage in a concerto or sonata and it lacked clearness, he would ask me: 'Why is this passage not clear?' Sometimes I knew and sometimes I did not. But not until he was satisfied that I could not myself answer the question, would he show me how to answer it. He could make every least detail clear, illustrating it on his own violin; but if the pupil could 'work out his own salvation' he always encouraged him to do so.

"Most teachers make bowing a very complicated affair, adding to its difficulties. But Professor Auer develops a natural bowing, with an absolutely free wrist, in all his pupils; for he teaches each student along the line of his individual aptitudes. Hence the length of the fingers and the size of the hand make no difference, because in the case of each pupil they are treated as separate problems, capable of an individual solution. I have known of pupils who came to him with an absolutely stiff wrist; and yet he taught them to overcome it.

HOW TO STUDY

"Scale study—all Auer pupils had to practice scales every day, scales in all the intervals—is a most important thing. And following his idea of stimulating the pupil's self-development, the Professor encouraged us to find what we needed ourselves. I remember that once—we were standing in a corridor of the Conservatory—when I asked him, 'What should I practice in the way of studies?' he answered: 'Take the difficult passages from the great concertos. You cannot improve on them, for they are as good, if not better, as any studies written.' As regards technical work we were also encouraged to think out our own exercises. And this I still do. When I feel that my thirds and sixths need attention I practice scales and original figurations in these intervals. But genuine, resultful practice is something that should never be counted by 'hours.' Sometimes I do not touch my violin all day long; and one hour with head work is worth any number of days without it. At the most I never practice more than three hours a day. And when my thoughts are fixed on other things it would be time lost to try to practice seriously. Without technical control a violinist could not be a great artist; for he could not express himself. Yet a great artist can give even a technical study, say a Rode étude, a quality all its own in playing it. That technic, however, is a means, not an end, Professor Auer never allowed his pupils to forget. He is a wonderful master of interpretation. I studied the great concertos with him—Beethoven, Bruch, Mendelssohn, Tschaikovsky, Dvoøák, the Brahms concerto (which I prefer to any other); the Vieuxtemps Fifth and Lalo (both of which I have heard Ysaye, that supreme artist who possesses all that an artist should have, play in Berlin); the Elgar concerto (a fine work which I once heard Kreisler, an artist as great as he is modest, play wonderfully in Petrograd), as well as other concertos of the standard repertory. And Professor Auer always sought to have us play as individuals; and while he never allowed us to overstep the boundaries of the musically esthetic, he gave our individuality free play within its limits. He never insisted on a pupil accepting his own nuances of interpretation because they were his. I know that when playing for him, if I came to a passage which demanded an especially beautiful legato rendering, he would say: 'Now show how you can sing!' The exquisite legato he taught was all a matter of perfect bowing, and as he often said: 'There must be no such thing as strings or hair in the pupil's consciousness. One must not play violin, one must sing violin!'

I had been planning a different shot for the T189 theme this week, but when I came across this I could not resist, so this one is B is for Beauty :-) also for the photo 91:113 where the theme is frozen.

Close-up of the Asantehene, the traditional King of the Ashanti (with parasol holder and other paraphernalia of royalty). I acquired this small brass figurine in the early 1970s in Accra, Ghana. It may actually be a bit older than that, but my suspicion is that this is a replica made in a local workshop (the institution of the Asantehene is still alive and kicking in Ghana). 2x tele converter plus Helios 44M-7 at F2. One of the most important discoveries I made when living for a while in Black Africa, is, that after a short time I did no longer 'see' skin colour or simply Black people, I just saw people's faces in their individuality. What distinguishes people visually is their facial expression, whatever their skin colour.

shot by KHWD on my Prisoner tour. We ahev been quite a few times, the pottery is great as well. Sorry about the cable but it makes it real! ;) x

So let me tell you all about Sir Clough Williams-Ellis and the prisoner at portmeirion

Let's start with Sir Clough Williams-Ellis.

Clough Williams-Ellis

Sir Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis (1883-1978) was a Welsh architect and a pioneer in conservation and environmentalism. He is best known for creating the Italianate village of Portmeirion in North Wales. His vision was to blend architecture with the natural beauty of the area, and he achieved this by using a mix of styles and salvaged materials1. Clough was also a notable figure in Welsh architecture during the first half of the 20th century.

Portmeirion and The Prisoner

Portmeirion, the village Clough Williams-Ellis designed, became famous as the filming location for the 1960s cult TV series The Prisoner. The show starred Patrick McGoohan as Number Six, a former government agent who finds himself imprisoned in a mysterious and surreal village3. The unique and eclectic architecture of Portmeirion provided the perfect backdrop for the show's themes of surveillance, control, and individuality.

The series has since gained a cult following and continues to be celebrated by fans through conventions and events held at Portmeirion. Hope it helps, Kx

On the other hand, prayer is worship of the heart, the outpouring of the soul, a matter of kavanah (inner devotion). Thus, Jewish prayer is guided by two opposite principles: order and outburst, regularity and spontaneity, uniformity and individuality, law and freedom,23 a duty and a prerogative,24 empathy and self-expression, insight and sensitivity, creed and faith, the word and that which is beyond words.

---Abraham Joshua Heschel, Man’s Quest for God: Studies in Prayer and Symbolism

In slow motion the drops appear,

coldly beating upon this worn facade.

Wearing away the last of all I am,

numbing me for all eternity.

A deepened muffled sound,

resonates inside my aching head.

Each minuscule chilling drop falling,

at a tempo to drive one mad.

I watch as each watery bomb,

explodes upon this damaged body.

Then slithers down till it has done all it can,

to awaken my soul from this emotional sleep.

Without passion I realise with blank stare,

a combination of water and unfamiliar tears.

Falling together, melding as one,

until it impossible to recognise

their individuality.

You shouldn't mumble when you speak

But keep your tongue up in your cheek

And if you stumble on to something better

Remember that it's humble that you seek

You got all the skill you need,

Individuality

You got something

Call it gumption

Call it anything you want

Because when you play the fool now

You're only fooling everyone else

You're learning to love yourself.

Detail of a portico of Wells Cathedral, seen from the north. The royal face here raises all sorts of questions - not just the usual ones about the symmetry between crown and altar or the issue of political propaganda, but about the emergence in western art of individual expression in sculpture vis-a-vis typified representation.

If you wish to have a fully-blown example of an idealised portrayal of a human being (but see later), here it is. This is a sculpture of Augustus, Rome's first "Emperor" (24 BC to 14 AD) who was also venerated as a god. Probably done posthumously and in a workshop in Thessaloniki, it shows the man in the prime of his youth and very athletic indeed. Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki. Leica M8 plus Voigtlaender 35/1.4.

Cape May Warblers spend a lot of time on these plants, and are drawn to them early in the morning (as in the image here, a first light experience) or at the end of the day. The reason is likely that certain insects hide in the complex Mullein flowers, but I don’t know for certain. They comb through the plant, often working from lower down and then upwards.

Like the transitioning male Wood Duck I posted yesterday, this is a bird in transition; but coming out of full breeding colours. There is something about the in-between stages of plumage, especially of birds we know well in their normal breeding colours (because that is when they initially pass through here, on their way to breeding grounds), that is fun to photograph. Juveniles, first year birds developing a base, or adults moving toward a more generic colouring; the birds seem to acquire an individuality lacking in the spring.

I squared the crop to remove some distracting background elements that I could not avoid with the camera at the time. What is sometimes ‘habitat’ is at other times ‘pointlessly busy and distracting stuff’. It is however not a math equation, with a right answer that I can ‘prove’. It can take me a long time to feel right about that, and I know I likely include too much more often than not. Working on it.

I wanted to post a bright late summer image because I am in Saskatoon, where it seems like it is mid-winter. Minus 20s at night, and lots of crunchy hard snow. I was in shorts in Ottawa three days ago.

I don't talk to flowers, they talk to me and I gladly listen with my eyes!

Shimmering in silky tones, trembling with beauty and individuality... joined in passion like grown from one stem, they belong together.

I discovered these, a salmon pink I had NEVER seen before! The petals look 'waxy' but feel silky soft!

The peony was originally introduced as medicine. In fact, its ancient Japanese name "Ebisugusuri" literally means ‘medicine from China’.

However, due to its beautiful and now mostly double blooms, in time, many decorative varieties were developed. In Japanese society, it was seen both as a medicine and a source of beauty.

THANKS for ALL your comments and visits, so appreciated.

Have a wonderful day, filled with love and beauty, M, (*_*)
