We all have layers and different sides, but at the end of the day, there's only one of us and we are all unique.

" Another round of bullets hits my skin

Well, fire away 'cause today, I won't let the shame sink in

We are bursting through the barricades

And reach above the sun (we are warriors)

Yeah, that's what we'll become

Won't let them break me down to dust

I know that there's a place for us

For we are glorious

When the sharpest words wanna cut me down

Gonna send a flood, gonna drown them out

I am brave, I am bruised

I am who I'm meant to be, this is me

Look out 'cause here I come

And I'm marching on to the beat I drum

I'm not scared to be seen

I make no apologies, this is me

...This is me .. "

Those of us who become photographers are never satisfied with just looking at someone else's expression of something that is dear to us. We must produce our own images, instead of buying postcards and photo books. We seek to make our own statements of individuality :-)

In the early days Veere was a flourishing commercial city. This prosperity can be found in the beautiful historical premises. The town of Veere arose in the twelfth century. The following centuries the town was being used to store Scottish wool. Veere still has these typical Scottish homes, which were built in the sixteenth century by rich Scottish merchants. At the Kaai in Veere, two of these Scottish houses still stand, and they remind people of the wool trade back in those days. Antique collections of the last private owners are among the things which can be admired here. Also fans of porcelain, furniture, style rooms and stitch costumes have much to look at. In the Scottish houses you can regularly go to see different expositions of the artists from Veere.

Big church

Big church Veere

The big church is from 1348 and it is a really great sight. As from 1811 the church was being used by Napoleon’s soldiers as a military hospital; the church was a beggars house and a barrack for a while as well. You can still clearly see the traces of an eventful past..

For the world I wish that the war will stop and that reasonableness and respect for each other's individuality will prevail, I wish you all a good 2023.

"The Syndics," also known as "The Sampling Officials," is a renowned painting created by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn in 1662. It is an exceptional example of group portraiture from the Dutch Golden Age, depicting five men gathered around a table, engaged in their duties as syndics (officers) of the Amsterdam Drapers' Guild.

The painting is notable for its meticulous attention to detail and Rembrandt's skillful use of light and shadow. The figures are positioned in a semi-circle around the table, with their faces illuminated by a strong light source from the left. This dramatic lighting technique creates a sense of depth and dimensionality, drawing the viewer's attention to the individual expressions and gestures of the syndics.

Each syndic is portrayed with distinctive characteristics, capturing their roles and personalities within the guild. Rembrandt expertly renders their varied facial features, clothing, and accessories, demonstrating his mastery in capturing human likeness and conveying individuality. The syndics are shown examining fabric samples, which symbolize their responsibility for regulating quality and standards within the textile industry.

"The Syndics" is regarded as one of Rembrandt's most celebrated works and is highly regarded for its technical brilliance and psychological depth. The painting exemplifies his ability to infuse ordinary subjects with dignity and introspection, elevating them beyond mere representation. It also reflects the artist's deep understanding of human nature, emphasizing the individuality and humanity of each syndic.

Today, "The Syndics" is housed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, where it continues to captivate visitors with its remarkable craftsmanship and profound insight into the human condition. It stands as a testament to Rembrandt's enduring legacy as one of the greatest painters in Western art history.

I really want to hear you but

Your individuality breaks up

Words carry worries

Chaotic crescendos rise

Don’t sing all at once, either

I can’t help you if I don’t know

your unique challenges or hopes

I can’t rejoice in your victories either

I know you’d like to be a

chorus of living breathing talented lyrics

versus a cacophony

that makes even the most patient run.

But when the words have no meaning

when we lose ourselves in a

dissolving plot

it is impossible to see an exit.

Now, don’t laugh all at once.

I know there was a funny anecdote in there

But I don’t know whose it was and

if your uproar is with me or against me.

Now, don’t cry out all at once.

There aren’t enough tissues in the world

to get to each of your faces as you

yearn for new redemption.

When we don’t wait our turn

When we aren’t calm and enduring

When we insist we are the most important…

We are all doomed.

What is in this wine?

The more I drink the more I wander off

into a stranger's eyes

I like the way that they reflect my thoughts

What is in this air?

it feels like feathery dust everywhere

and as I breathe it in

I breathe the masculine scent of his skin

And I feel homeless

Your comfortable caress

has triggered unfamiliar restlessness

you and I are we

I feel I've lost my individuality

You're watching me rebel

believing stories only hearts can tell

but when is it enough?

when do I call my feelings on their bluff

And I feel homeless

And I remember us now

but I forgot what we felt like

somewhere along the way

My Tune

Spend all your time waiting

For that second chance

For a break that would make it okay

There's always some reason

To feel not good enough

And it's hard at the end of the day

I need some distraction

Oh a beautiful release

Memories seep from my veins

Let me be empty

Oh and weightless and maybe

I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of the angel

Fly away from here

From this dark cold hotel room

And the endlessness that you fear

You are pulled from the wreckage

Of your silent reverie

You're in the arms of the angel

May you find some comfort here

So tired of the straight line

And everywhere you turn

There's vultures and thieves at your back

And the storm keeps on twisting

You keep on building the lies

That you make up for all that you lack

It don't make no difference

Escaping one last time

It's easier to believe

In this sweet madness

Oh this glorious sadness

That brings me to my knees

In the arms of the angel

Fly away from here

From this dark cold hotel room

And the endlessness that you fear

You are pulled from the wreckage

Of your silent reverie

You're in the arms of the angel

May you find some comfort here

You're in the arms of the angel

May you find some comfort here

The sculpture is constructed in bronze and stainless steel and stands over six metres high on it’s elevated stone plinth. It overlooks the town of Westport much like a figurehead at the prow of a ship.

The Sentinel was commissioned by Westport Town Council in 2013. The sculpture depicts a spirit horse and rider and together they stand at the crossroads and point the way to the holy mountain, Croagh Patrick and beyond. They point the way for pilgrims who have journeyed to this special place for more than 500 years. They stand tall as they overlook and guard the town of Westport. The sentinel is a guardian and an angel.

It embodies a spirit of strength, fortitude and individuality. It is a figure both fierce and gentle and I believe, a suitable symbol for the enduring spirit of Westport and it’s community.

The image of a lighthouse can be used as a symbol and metaphor for advancing the human quest for meaning. Lighthouses symbolize strength, safety, individuality, mystery, and existentialism. Strength and resilience are qualities that enable human beings to overcome life's most formidable challenges and obstacles.

"Why fit in when you were born to stand out?"

Any other T. Rex fans out there? Ride a White Swan by T. Rex is one of my fave songs of theirs.

I have a very wide and varied taste in music, but I do have a bit of a penchant for 60's/70's British bands. Think Yardbirds, Who, Cream, The Animals, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Kinks, T. Rex, Queen, Pink Floyd, Bowie, Slade, The Sweet etc.

Fun fact #1

Swan was T. Rex's first significant hit single all the way back in 1970 & helped shape the glam rock era. From 1970 to 1973, T. Rex were extremely popular in the UK, with a run of eleven top ten singles, four of which reached number one.

Fun fact #2

Google says "Ride a White Swan” is a song that encourages individuality, self-expression, and the pursuit of personal freedom. With its enchanting lyrics and dreamlike imagery, it invites the listener to embark on a journey of self-discovery and exploration. It is a timeless reminder to embrace our uniqueness, let go of societal expectations, and ride the waves of life with grace and courage. And here I was thinking it was just a catchy, breezy little number!

Have a great week everyone!

"The impressions we receive, which often appear merely chaotic, consist of three elements; the impression of the color of the object, its form, and of its combined color and form, i.e., of the object itself. At this point the individuality of the artist comes to the front and disposes, as he wills, these three elements. It is clear, therefore, that the choice of object (i.e., of one of the elements in the harmony of form) must be decided only by a corresponding vibration in the human soul..."

This is one of many carved stone heads at the base of the arches holding up the roof of the church of St. Ippolyts in Hertfordshire (near Hitchin). The arches were built in the 14th century when the building was transformed from the romanesque to the gothic style. So we know that this is a late medieval sculpture. There is a lot of discussion as to when western art re-discovered the individuality of the facial expression. Looking at this and some other sculptures in this church, my feeling is that the 14th century may a be a good candidate for this individualistic turn. Fuji X-Pro1.

A particular aesthetic view of a popular statue, dated to about 340–330 BC, Antikythera Ephebe. It is one of the most brilliant products of Peloponnesian bronze sculpture; the individuality and character it displays have encouraged speculation on its possible sculptor. It is, perhaps, the work of the famous sculptor Euphranor. He held a spherical object in his right hand, and possibly may have represented Paris presenting the Apple of Discord to Aphrodite. It has also been suggested that the youth is a depiction of Perseus holding the head of the slain Gorgon.

Ephebe was found in 1900 by sponge-divers in the area of the ancient Antikythera shipwreck off the island of Antikythera, Greece. It was the first of the series of Greek bronze sculptures that the Aegean and Mediterranean yielded up in the twentieth century which have fundamentally altered the modern view of Ancient Greek sculpture. The wreck site, which is dated about 70–60 BC, also yielded the Antikythera Mechanism, an astronomical calculating device.

We were in the Bay View community near Petoskey, Michigan, when, due to a quick unexpected rain shower, we had to take cover in our vehicle. The rain was brief and we soon resumed our walk in the freshened air. This one will be included in my new "Bay View Michigan" collection on my website. With the collection I intend to give a flavor for the cottages in the community.

Photography is an interesting hobby and shows the individuality of 'appreciation' . . . 1 in 50 viewers give this photograph a thumbs up . . . while I feel it has a special aura. Fun sculptures by Spanish artist Santi Flores. He says they are figures showing individuality but demonstrating we can all come together . . . maybe. I just saw all these hands raised like excited children waving a greeting. They're lots of fun on Broadway between 40th and 38th Streets. I like the way they look like they're tickling the buildings.

Rakan statues at the Rokkaku-dō (Chōhō-ji) Temple in central Kyoto. Rakan are carved figures of monks, often executed with great individuality.

According to legend, Rokkaku-dō (official name Chōhō-ji) was founded in the 6th century CE, and it is famous as the birthplace of ikebana in Japan in the 15th century.

The title makes me think of a scene in Monty Python's "Life of Brian," when the throng of followers shout in unison "We are all individuals!" Except one person pipes up with "I'm not...." and is promptly shushed.

Europe, The Netherlands, Noord Brabant, Den Bosch, Design museum, 'Goth - designing darkness' exhibition (uncut)

The 'Goth – designing darkness' exhibition explores the dark side of the human mind and the human imagination & culture. The side that’s both fascinated and fearful of death, the occult and supernatural phenomena. That fascination has always been there. But in the middle of the 18th century, it came to the forefront due to the anxiety about the changing of society thru rapid urbanization and early industrialization. It was translated in funerary culture, painting and the plastic arts. It would later develop into the neurasthenia of the beginning of the 20th century. And literature brought us Mary Shelley (Frankenstein). In architecture Neo-Gothicism appeared too. It basically never went away. So it still inspires contemporary photography, cinema, video clips (Anton Corbijn), popular music (Siouxsie & the Banshees) and fashion. The exhibition offers an intriguing and eclectic historical overview. Displaying film clips featuring Bela Lugosi a.o. alongside Cuypers' neo-gothic architectural drawings.

Check it out and hurry, the exhibition closes on April 18.

This large model (beginning 20th century) shown here is informed by the fear of the urban with it high density and loss of individuality.

This is number 272 of the Museum album.
