Independence Day (Día de la Independencia) is a Mexican holiday to celebrate the “cry of independence” on September 16, 1810, which started a revolt against the Spaniards. It follows from the day of the Cry of Dolores (El Grito de Dolores), on September 15.

Celebrate Independence Day

Mexicans celebrate their country’s Independence Day with fireworks, parties (fiestas), food, dance and music on September 16. Flags, flowers and decorations in the colors of the Mexican flag – red, white and green – are seen in public areas in cities and towns in Mexico. Whistles and horns are blown and confetti is thrown to celebrate this festive occasion. "Viva Mexico" or "Viva la independencia” are shouted amidst the crowds on this day.

Public Life

Independence Day is a national public holiday in Mexico. Banks, schools, government offices and many businesses are closed. Some streets and roads may be closed or restricted in major cities to make way for large celebrations. People intending on travelling via public transport in Mexico should check with public transit authorities on any timetable or route changes.

About Independence Day

Independence Day celebrates the day Miguel Hidalgo is believed to have made the cry of independence (El Grito de la Independencia) in the town of Dolores, in the north-central part of the Mexican state of Guanajuato. Hidalgo was one of the nation’s leaders during the War of Independence in Mexico.

There is no scholarly agreement on what was exactly said by Hidalgo, but his speech, also known as the cry of Dolores (el Grito de Dolores), was made on September 16, 1810 to motivate people to revolt against the Spanish regime. Hidalgo’s army fought against the Spanish soldiers in the fight for independence, but he was captured and executed on July 30, 1811. Mexico's independence was not declared until September 28, 1821.

Happy Independence Day America! Our great land is now 244 years old and we have much to be proud of. We together write the next chapter of the American experience. In America, we can do anything, we can be anything, and we can achieve anything. Centuries from now, our legacy will be the cities we built, the leaders we crafted, the good that we did, and the monuments we created to inspire us all. America’s destiny is in our sights. America’s heroes are embedded in our hearts. America’s future is in our hands. Happy Fourth of July and God bless.

I love this photo because it was created by chance. It gave me during my editing a completely different inspiration.

Swadhinata Stambha (Bengali: স্বাধীনতা স্তম্ভ) or Independence Monument is a national monument in Bangladesh to commemorate the historical events that took place in the Suhrawardy Udyan, previously known as Ramna Race Course ground regarding the Liberation War of Bangladesh.

Government of Bangladesh took the initiative to build the monument in 1996. The construction began in 1999 and completed in 2013. Kashef Mahboob Chowdhury and Marina Tabassum designed the project. The main attraction of the project is a 50-meter high tower composed of stacked glass panels.

Rebuilding the 1803 Schooner 'Independence'

In the winter of 1803 on the banks of what is now American River, Kangaroo Island, crew from the US Brig Union, under Captain Isaac Pendleton, from Stonington, Connecticut, USA, constructed the first vessel to be built in, what was to be proclaimed, 33 years later, the State of South Australia.

Independence was born. The vessel was used for sealing operations around Kangaroo Island and as far afield as the Antipodes Islands, south of New Zealand. She was presumed lost with all hands when making her second voyage south in 1805.

July Fourth is Independence Day in the United States of America. It’s the day we rally around the grill to celebrate.

Perhaps this year we can stretch our plans just a little bit more and create some new traditions.

Here’s a list of fun things to make, do, and try:

Soda Fireworks – The coke and mentos experiment is not new but odds are you probably haven’t tried it for yourself! This year make some safe explosion fun and enjoy getting a little messy.

If you’re really organized you can put together a choreographed soda firework show!

Healthy Flag Cake – Bring an easy, healthy dessert that looks great on the food table! Stack strawberry, banana, strawberry, banana, and then a row of blueberries on a kabob and organize them on the plate to create a flag.

Have a safe and Happy 4th of July!

Thought I would post this today, tomorrow is a full day : )

It's hot and sunny out - like the 4th should be! Happy Independence Day!

Well, the 3rd of October celebration in Leiden is not quite the same as Independence Day, but it is quite similar, since on this day the city of Leiden traditionally celebrates the end of the Spanish siege in 1574. By the way, this alien-inspired invention is called 'Superstar'. As is clear from all the umbrellas, it was a very rainy party this year...

I took this using a tripod standing under a small roof of a ticket box that slightly guarded me from the rain (but I had to dry my camera lens every so often). The mist was caused by an apparatus belonging to the attraction.

Freedom isn't free, it cost limbs and lives..Thank you to all who serve.

A couple more shots coming of this build to show off some different angles. Here I'm showing off the picture window that sits above the rear entrance to the building, along with the different facade on the back of the building that lacks the ornamentation on the front.

I just wanted to wish everyone a Happy Independence Day. I took this image a few weeks ago on Fire Island. I'm going back in a few hours - and all I can say is it better not rain! :-)

Have a great weekend everyone, I'll catch up when I come back.

Fireworks over Lake Austin, Austin, TX

My version of Trey Ratcliff's (www.stuckincustoms.com) classic shot. Taken by me at the same place but a couple years after Trey's photo. See below for Trey's version.

Trey mentions in his blog that it was a rainy day which gives his version more character with the low hanging clouds. It was a clear night for me so the sky was not nearly as interesting. Also because of the nice weather, there are a lot more boats on Lake Austin than in Trey's version.

Independence day here in Grenada is a big deal, with kids and Adults draped in clothing that reflects our National Colours !

On July 4 1776 America declared their independence as a free country. Today, 235 years later, we celebrate. Happy 4th of July flickr! Now let's eat some BBQ!

(Also, sorry about no stars. Picnik got to slow when I tried to add them all.)

Part of my Independence Day celebration.

I'll be celebrating my independence and freedom every day the rest of the year and the rest of my life! There's nowhere I'd rather be :-)

My personal independence and freedom were unexpectedly forced on me. I fought it a bit and it took a while to accept and adapt to it. Looking back, it was a blessing in disguise. Possibly done intentionally in my best interest to save me. Maybe it was for Joe. It's had a marked positive effect on him too. He's much calmer and at ease. Whatever the reasoning, we're finding our groove and rhythm and it's pretty cool :-)

I have enough positive energy to power a small village!

This historic precedent of Colonial Georgian Architecture sits at the heart of Philadelphia's old city center. Independence Hall also played a crucial role in the founding of the United States, as its storied assembly rooms witnessed the signing of both the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and the Constitution in 1787.

"Hurry... wake up... get your camera... look outside!!!" a friend breathlessly shouted into the phone. "Where?" I asked, my mind still in a sleepy haze. "In the sky!"

I looked out my window and caught a glimpse of the edges of a large cloud partially obscured by the multitude of apartment developments that have sprung up around my apartment recently.

I grabbed my camera and headed outside for a better view. As I stepped out into the sunshine and blistering heat I looked skyward and there it was: one of the best cloud formations I've ever seen. Saucer shaped with a tornado-like funnel in its center, the cotton candy mass seemed to hover over Halla Mountain.

I quickly got into my car and raced to a cluster of hills near the new government buildings behind Ido Apartments with the hope that I could get a clear view of the cloud and the landscape around it. Bad idea. Too many telephone poles and cables cluttered the scene.

I next rushed up to Halla Library but the view was again obscured, this time by buildings behind the library.

Worried that the cloud would soon lose its amazing shape and disappear, I made one last-ditch effort to get a photo from the roof of Jeju University Hospital. 6 floors... on a hill... should be enough elevation to get a clean photo of the sky, cloud, and some of the natural landscape below.

I squeezed into a small parking space and rushed up to the 6th floor, my excitement building. I reached for the door to the roof and... it was locked! Of course it was. Why wouldn't it be?

Back down to the first floor I went and to the dreaded administration office. I tried to explain my "situation" to the young man at the desk, his response a typical "hmmmm... maybe not possible". But, seeing my disappointment, he said, "Just a minute, I'll make a few calls."

Ten minutes later , as thoughts of a lost photo opportunity filled my head, he said, "come with me!"

Surrounded by 3 security guards (I've never felt so important!), we entered the elevator and made our way back up to the 6th floor. The security lock changed from red to green as we opened the door and made our way onto the roof. Finally!

I ran to the edge and was relieved to see no windows or metal bars blocking my view. And what a view it was! Like something from the skies of the American Midwest, the massive lenticular cloud hovered over Halla mountain, its long shadow spreading over the lush, green "oreums", or hills, below like a scene from the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day.

I clicked the shutter once. Then, I adjusted my angle and took 3 more, including the photo you see here. Finished, I turned around and saw a group of people with arms outstretched behind me, camera phones happily snapping away as they utttered "ooohhhhs and aaaaahhhhs". I knew that I had captured something special.
