It seems counterintuitive to watch a farmer set their crops ablaze, but these controlled sugar cane burns ignite the leaves around the stalks which burn off like newspaper and make the crop more efficient to harvest. During harvesting season, when we're out and about, we'll see multiple smoke plumes as we drive through the area. It's a controlled process and they flame out and disperse surprisingly quickly considering the size of the smoke plume. Sometimes you get a hint of burnt caramel on the beeze.

The practice is controversial though and is at the heart of a class action lawsuit at the moment. Local neighborhoods are claiming the smoke, soot and ash causes asthma, difficulty breathing and other illnesses.

Sugarcane can actually be harvested green but it's less efficient. It will be interesting to see if harvesting practices change in the future.

The Tower of San Miguel, also known as the Cabo de Gata Tower, is an 18th-century military watchtower.

Ferdinand VI constructed the tower in 1756 to safeguard the village of La Almadraba de Monteleva and its salt mines. The tower is tall and conical, replacing the destroyed previous one. It has two floors, a rooftop terrace, and a staircase with a bridge that leads to the first floor.

The tower was dismantled after the War of Independence, and the canons were abandoned on the beach. In 1941, it was repurposed as the Guardia Civil barracks.

In the 1980s, a small wall with turrets at its corners was added to the tower.

Currently, the tower lies in disuse.

E la neve copre

tanto freddo il cuore mio

battiti come brividi

“Sssh, silenzio in aula”

del mio cuore di neve

e di sangue

This is an abandoned site where iron ore and other minerals extracted from the workings at Lucainena de Las Torres, in the Sierra de Alhamilla, were brought by rail for export by boat. I assume many of the abandoned buildings I saw were the administration and residential buildings servicing the site.

in ogni forma e segreto

E allora dalle onde mi lascio infrangere

e ricomporre

in miriadi di riflessi vecchi e nuovi

E nel mio cerchio ruoto

raggi d’incanti come ali di libellule

dispiego forte le braccia al nuovo

rassicuro di abbracci il vecchio

ed indietro

il capo non volgo
