Monument commemorating the 1981 Irish hunger strike, with Free Derry corner in the background. Twelve IRA prisoners starved themselves to death during the summer of 1981 in protest against the refusal of the British government to grant special rights to what the IRA considered "Irish prisoners of war." The most well-known of the hunger strikers is leader Bobby Sands, who was elected a Member of Parliament during the strike but refused to take the seat.

Spiky green sisal plants line the roads and barren fields of Mwingi. Local people have not harvested their staple food crops since 2009 due to the drought. Sisal, a species of the agave plant, is one of the few crops to survive. Many residents earn a meager income by hand-weaving sisal fibers into baskets.
