Two hundred miles of engineering impossibilities. These were the words W.C. Van Horne used to describe the ancient, nearly impenetrable, north shore of Lake Superior that the CPR triumphantly carved across during the late 1800s. The incalculable toil of human labour, and staggering feat of railroad engineering, is just as remarkable nearly 140 years later. Curving along the rocky coastline of Gitche Gumee at Neys, Ontario, British Columbia-bound train no. 113 traverses just one of the two-hundred miles that Van Horne so aptly described. Photo 2/2.

When I visited St Kilda in 2021 Great Skuas were a common sight but in 2022 I did not see a single Great Skua on the islands, although we did see small numbers at sea. They were hit hard by bird flu and according to this BBC piece www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-highlands-islands-61867211 a hundred and twenty Great Skuas had been found dead on St Kilda with bird flu by late June 2022. This is in addition to 60 bird flu deaths last breeding season. Scotland supports about 56% of the global population of this species classed as vulnerable by IUCN but I suspect bird flu may upgrade the conservation status of this species. The Scottish population was 9650 breeding pairs in 2002, largely on the Hebrides and Northern Isles, but I don't know what the impact of bird flu has been elsewhere in Scotland on this species. I suspect the next census will show a considerably depleted population I photographed this wing-flashing adult on St Kilda in 2021.
Dear ulya (my friend), about your idea of making a shimmering waterfall... I failed at attempting to make it happen. I will try again, nonethless! :D
*sigh* I'm so sorry I haven't been a good contact recently. I'll try my best to catch up with your streams now -- though I can't promise you on that..
Frustrated. That's how I feel right now, in this minute. I want to pull my hair out of my head and whisper to myself that everything will be all fine. But, when I closed my eyes to escape from pain and urge to crash the plates...
I opened them and realized I'll be stuck in reality. I can't run away.
AAAA I'm so cheesy.
A Hundred Wishes
by Loreena McKinnett
If I had a hundred wishes
And only one of them could come true
I would wish that over this distance
I could be right there now with you
Could we be in France again
Dance beneath the olive trees
Mingling bodies on a deserted beach
Moon above to catch the breeze
In the night I see you still
Darken hair and tender smile
Leaning out of the window sill
Clutching roses on the while
Could we be in Spain again
Dance beneath the olive trees
Mingling bodies on a deserted beach
Moon above to catch the breeze
If I had a hundred wishes
Only one of them could come true
I would wish that over this distance
I could be right there now with you
Do you remember the Summer grand
We took to the coast of Clare
Heard the ocean warm the rocks
Listened to the music there
Could we be in Ireland again
Dance beneath the oak trees
Mingling bodies on a deserted beach
Moon above to catch the breeze
If I had a hundred wishes
Only one of them could come true
I would wish that over this distance
I could be right there now with you

Looks like a doughnut covered in speckled icing - but it's actually the head of a bolt or rivet (diameter perhaps just under 10mm) on a hoarding around a development site. The hoarding (and the bolt) have been spray painted over by a graffiti artist, hence the speckled effect. For some reason the bolt grabbed my attention more than the graffiti! :-) Shot with my 50mm Zeiss Touit Macro lens.

The wind rolled across the desert like a sigh, reshaping the endless waves of golden dust. James Wren wiped the sweat from his brow and adjusted his pack. He had walked this road for three days in search of a gas station to refuel his car. His water was low. His hope, lower.
Then he heard it.
A faint, crackling melody, twisting through the wind. It was impossible — a tune that didn’t belong to the desert, something old, something ghostly. He looked ahead, searching for the source.
At first, he thought it was a trick of the heat. But there it was, abandoned on the road — a rusting car from another time. The windshield was shattered, the doors long eroded by sand and wind. But the radio, impossibly, still played.
James approached cautiously. The melody wavered and dipped, 1930’s jazz, the kind played in smoky speakeasies a century ago.
His fingers brushed against the corroded metal of the door. A whisper of a voice rose out of the music.
"…always knew you’d find me…"
James’ breath hitched. He stepped back, pulse hammering. The voice was thin, feminine, stretched with age. It wasn’t a recording. It was speaking.
"It’s been so long, Jimmy."
The desert was empty. No one had called him Jimmy since —
No.
He swallowed hard. He forced himself to look inside.
The dial of the radio glowed. The voice rose from the speaker.
"You promised me a drive to the coast, Jimmy. You never came back."
He remembered. A lifetime ago, or maybe a hundred lifetimes. The night he ran. The night he left her behind.
The music crackled, fading in and out.
"I waited. I waited, Jimmy."
The wind howled and the sand began to shift.
The radio let out one last, ghostly note before falling silent.

For around one hundred and fifty years Long Eaton, Derbyshire was a major lace manufacturing centre and Harrington Mill was the largest of the lace mills in the town. It is still standing and now used by other businesses and is seen here on the 12th February 2019.
In 1885 local building contractor Poxon and Rice won the tender for the building of the first phase of the Harrington Mills in Leopold Street, Long Eaton. It opened for business in January 1887 with the second phase of the building completed by Wheatley and Maule in 1888. The large mill was 550 feet long and four stores high, containing over one million bricks. The semi circular turrets along one side housed the staircases to the landings of the various lace manufacturers who occupied the building. At its peak Harrington Mill contained standings for 255 lace machines and was the largest of all the tenement mills in Long Eaton. The standings were rented out, allowing smaller enterprises to flourish and at one point Harrington Mill housed 26 separate lace manufacturing companies.

“Dying is not romantic, and death is not a game which will soon be over... Death is not anything... death is not... It's the absence of presence, nothing more... the endless time of never coming back... a gap you can't see, and when the wind blows through it, it makes not sound...”

a part of the cascading tom ghyll waterfalls in the lake district, uk. this is situated right next to tarn hows and the area has an abundance of photo opportunities. from the tarn itself to holme fell just a few hundred metres away. although i was quite disappointed that sunrise around the tarn was non existent, these falls more than made up for the lack of decent light.

The area that was to become West Palm Beach was settled in the late 1870s and 1880s by a few hundred settlers who called the vicinity "Lake Worth Country." These settlers were a diverse community from different parts of the United States and the world. They included founding families such at the Potters and the Lainharts, who would go on to become leading members of the business community in the fledgling city. The first white settlers in Palm Beach County lived around Lake Worth, then an enclosed freshwater lake, named for Colonel William Jenkins Worth, who had fought in the Second Seminole War in Florida in 1842. Most settlers engaged in the growing of tropical fruits and vegetables for shipment the north via Lake Worth and the Indian River. By 1890, the U.S. Census counted over 200 people settled along Lake Worth in the vicinity of what would become West Palm Beach. The area at this time also boasted a hotel, the "Cocoanut House", a church, and a post office. The city was platted by Henry Flagler as a community to house the servants working in the two grand hotels on the neighboring island of Palm Beach, across Lake Worth in 1893, coinciding with the arrival of the Florida East Coast railroad. Flagler paid two area settlers, Captain Porter and Louie Hillhouse, a combined sum of $45,000 for the original town site, stretching from Clear Lake to Lake Worth.
On November 5, 1894, 78 people met at the "Calaboose" (the first jail and police station located at Clematis St. and Poinsettia, now Dixie Hwy.) and passed the motion to incorporate the Town of West Palm Beach in what was then Dade County (now Miami-Dade County). This made West Palm Beach the first incorporated municipality in Dade County and in South Florida. The town council quickly addressed the building codes and the tents and shanties were replaced by brick, brick veneer, and stone buildings. The city grew steadily during the 1890s and the first two decades of the 20th century, most residents were engaged in the tourist industry and related services or winter vegetable market and tropical fruit trade. In 1909, Palm Beach County was formed by the Florida State Legislature and West Palm Beach became the county seat. In 1916, a new neo-classical courthouse was opened, which has been painstakingly restored back to its original condition, and is now used as the local history museum.
The city grew rapidly in the 1920s as part of the Florida land boom. The population of West Palm Beach quadrupled from 1920 to 1927, and all kinds of businesses and public services grew along with it. Many of the city's landmark structures and preserved neighborhoods were constructed during this period. Originally, Flagler intended for his Florida East Coast Railway to have its terminus in West Palm, but after the area experienced a deep freeze, he chose to extend the railroad to Miami instead.
The land boom was already faltering when city was devastated by the 1928 Okeechobee hurricane. The Depression years of the 1930s were a quiet time for the area, which saw slight population growth and property values lower than during the 1920s. The city only recovered with the onset of World War II, which saw the construction of Palm Beach Air Force Base, which brought thousands of military personnel to the city. The base was vital to the allied war effort, as it provided an excellent training facility and had unparalleled access to North Africa for a North American city. Also during World War II, German U-Boats sank dozens of merchant ships and oil tankers just off the coast of West Palm Beach. Nearby Palm Beach was under black out conditions to minimize night visibility to German U-boats.
The 1950s saw another boom in population, partly due to the return of many soldiers and airmen who had served in the vicinity during the war. Also, the advent of air conditioning encouraged growth, as year-round living in a tropical climate became more acceptable to northerners. West Palm Beach became the one of the nation's fastest growing metropolitan areas during the 1950s; the city's borders spread west of Military Trail and south to Lake Clarke Shores. However, many of the city's residents still lived within a narrow six-block wide strip from the south to north end. The neighborhoods were strictly segregated between White and African-American populations, a legacy that the city still struggles with today. The primary shopping district remained downtown, centered around Clematis Street.
In the 1960s, Palm Beach County's first enclosed shopping mall, the Palm Beach Mall, and an indoor arena were completed. These projects led to a brief revival for the city, but in the 1970s and 1980s crime continued to be a serious issue and suburban sprawl continued to drain resources and business away from the old downtown area. By the early 1990s there were very high vacancy rates downtown, and serious levels of urban blight.
Since the 1990s, developments such as CityPlace and the preservation and renovation of 1920s architecture in the nightlife hub of Clematis Street have seen a downtown resurgence in the entertainment and shopping district. The city has also placed emphasis on neighborhood development and revitalization, in historic districts such as Northwood, Flamingo Park, and El Cid. Some neighborhoods still struggle with blight and crime, as well as lowered property values caused by the Great Recession, which hit the region particularly hard. Since the recovery, multiple new developments have been completed. The Palm Beach Mall, located at the Interstate 95/Palm Beach Lakes Boulevard interchange became abandoned as the downtown was revitalized - the very mall that initiated the original abandonment of the downtown. The mall was then redeveloped into the Palm Beach Fashion Outlets in February 2014. A station for All Aboard Florida, a high-speed passenger rail service serving Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, and Orlando, is under construction as of July 2015.

Hundreds of these little shorebirds were present at Reed Lake during my recent visit - a wonderful bonus for me because I'd never managed to photograph them before. Arctic breeders, they are heading north after wintering at sea in the Southern Hemisphere.
Standard sex roles are reversed in phalaropes. The female, seen here, is more brightly-coloured than the male, and does the courting. The male incubates the eggs and cares for the chicks. Although it's well known, I'm not sure that any scientist anywhere has a clue as to why this adaptation occurred.
Their behaviour matched that of the more common (in my area) Wilson's Phalarope, as they wheeled through the water like spinning tops to stir up insects, larvae, and maybe crustaceans. You can see little black specks on the water surface in front of this bird; apparently they are delicious.

106/365 - Spinning Aroung - Kylie Minogue
You can see the rain starting to fall on this one, the drops have been captured by the strobe light on the bottom corners of the picture.
I just had the time to shoot 3 sequences before the ramp was too wet to be ridden, but Arnaud is the best so he was able to throw three tailwhips in a row like this one, even on a slippy ramp !
Before the rain, I was chilling out on the docks with some friends, like we often do on sunny sundays, riding longskate or bikes.
I also met Julia, we were in the same classroom few years ago when I was studying at the University so that was cool to get some news from her and Alex.
After the rain, Cyril took a picture of Julien riding my board.
You must be wondering why Kylie on this one ?!? Cause the title of the song fits pretty well and I just love her tiny australian short in this video, ah ah... Sorry I'm just a man ! Hope you'll like it !!

A much photographed view of the Nicholas Hawksmoor designed towers of All Souls College. For this version I've 'corrected the verticals' in Photoshop.
In case anyone is wondering why this view is just about the only view you see of the building it's because it's not generally open to the public so can only be photographed through the ornate gateway on the Radcliffe Square.

From Wikipedia : "Every hundred years, and generally on 14 January, there is a commemorative feast after which the fellows parade around the college with flaming torches, singing the Mallard Song and led by a "Lord Mallard" who is carried in a chair, in search of a legendary mallard that supposedly flew out of the foundations of the college when it was being built. During the hunt the Lord Mallard is preceded by a man bearing a pole to which a mallard is tied – originally a live bird, latterly either dead (1901) or carved from wood (2001). The last mallard ceremony was in 2001 and the next is due in 2101.
The precise origin of the custom is not known, but it dates from at least 1632. A benign parody of this custom has been portrayed as the Unseen University's "Megapode chase" in Sir Terry Pratchett's 2009 novel Unseen Academicals."
