He has a lot of pollen on his bill.... they are great pollinators!
Really appreciate the kind words and faves!
This male White-necked Jacobin, Florisuga mellivora mellivora, was in the gardens at Asa Wright Nature Centre. They tend to chase each other and the smaller hummers.
April 16, 2016. Trinidad, West Indies.
I'm not sure if this was a non-stop flight from the Yucatan peninsula to Miami-Dade. It is said that they fly northeastern along the Gulf of Mexico into Texas and then stays by the Gulf states. This one decided to find more tropical weather and came down south to Miami!
Anna's Hummingbird headed to the Lavender in the garden. Soo hard to capture these fast guys in flight...but FUN to try :-)
The name hummingbird comes from the humming sound their wings make as they fly. Not because they don't know the words to a particular song...

A short video slideshow of Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. There's more on my YouTube channel. Thanks for watching and have a great day!
This feisty female Rufous Hummingbird is showing her displeasure at another hummingbird's attempt to detour her from the feeder. Her feathers are extended around her neck and shoulder area as well as the fanned extension of her tail feathers. This is done all in an effort to appear larger and more intimidating to her aggressor.

The golden hues of the evening light made for some additional magic in the wings of my little visitors.
I LOVE hummingbirds. Was so glad to have snapped some in flight - here's one, and I might put some others up later.
Hummingbird photos from 2012 turned into a photo slide show. I have been having a great time looking at the old photos and I have come to the conclusion that my editing and captioning skills leave a lot of room for improvement. Fortunately I have lots of free time to work on it. I hope you enjoy my humble offerings.
I finally got a shot of the hummer feeding on the flowering currant. To spot him in the field, mostly I listened for the sound of him clicking his disapproval that I was anywhere near "his" territory. It's been raining a lot and Sunday was the only sunny day I could get away...I spent four hours roaming around this area photographing, and had a blast!
Speaking of hummer photos, you have to check out the work of www.flickr.com/photos/michelroy/ . His bird photography is superb but he also has lots of other wildlife as well. He has a calendar for sale now with some amazing images. I've already ordered mine!
Colorado Springs, CO - I caught this male Broad-tailed Hummingbird as he was hovering in front of me, probably wondering who the heck I was and why I was pointing a large glass circle in his direction ...
Male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) hovering near a feeder.
I took this photo almost a year ago (April 2015), but only recently rediscovered it in my Aperture archives. I decided to work it up because I liked the colors so much. The hummingbird's position reminded me of a ballet dancer en pointe.
Strobist Info: SB-800 at 1/16 (+1/3) in mini softbox from camera left. SB-700 at 1/8 through umbrella from camera right. Phottix Strato II wireless trigger on SB-700 with wired sync cord from trigger to SB-800. I don't have it noted, but I believe the background was the shaded interior of a cardboard box.
Note: I composited the eye in from a different photo of the same bird because the bird was blinking in this frame.

Male Anna's hummingbird (Calypte anna) maneuvering near a feeder.
The slight blurring at the edges of the wings and along the tail feathers resulted from ambient light reflecting in off the ground. I opted not to clone it out because I liked the sense of motion that it conveyed.
Strobist Info: Four speedlights (SB-800, SB-700 and two 540EZs, each at 1/32) ganged in shoot-through umbrella from slightly above subject, camera left. Silver reflector (foil) below subject, camera right. Phottix Strato II wireless triggers on the 540EZs with sync cord to SB-800. SB-700 triggered by optical slave. Background is black foamcore with radial gradient added in post.

We put our Hummingbird feeder up for the first time this week. It didn't take long we had a visitor. Welcome back sweetie.
Colorado Springs, CO - I'm still working through a large collection of summer hummingbird photos, so here is another of my favorites. Just the tip of his tongue is visible as he anticipates his next meal ...
Colorado Springs, CO - We had oodles of Rufous hummingbirds this year and now I have oodles of their photos. In this one, she is already tasting her next bite ...
This Ruby Throated Hummingbird was quite the acrobat, after they saw me while feeding and quickly pulled away!
