I ended up photographing hummingbirds using my macro lens. It's a rather easy thing to do when you're inside the hummingbird aviary at the Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum in Tucson, AZ.

I added raisins and coconut and decided to skip the cream cheese frosting. but I can imagine these are heavenly with the frosting!
I made them into mini muffins and they took about 10-12 mins. at 350 F.

My DH's grandparents have several bird feeders outside their house, and, after a LOT of patience, was able to capture this beautiful hummingbird. (Out of both hummingbird pictures, I think this is my favorite -- it's eating from the feeder!)
I wish this had been clearer but I had to post it any way... Zoomed in while he rested in a tree...
At this rate I may have to dedicate a whole set to Hummingbirds;)
In courtship, the male attracts the female with an aerial display. He dives close to a female, his feathers making a loud whining sound near the bottom of an oval trajectory. Rufous Hummingbirds are highly territorial, defending feeding territories not only while breeding but also during migration. Rufous Hummingbirds do not sing but make warning chips in response to perceived threats. Their wings make a whine much like the sound of a cicada.
This Anna's was in my yard yesterday. I was putting out some salvia for...guess who...the hummingbirds when this one landed on a branch. I went in to get my camera and was pretty much around 4 feet or so from it.. It was not bothered by me at all. A juvenile who isn't afraid of people yet? I am not sure. It has been back many times, especially with my new salvia plant, lemon tree and star jasmine.
Another hummingbird of note is an Allen's that keeps coming into the yard that I cannot photograph. It hovers near the bird bath but hasn't landed. I am determined to get that Allen's.
