The hummingbird fledges should be busy doing this sort of thing to build up their strength for a long journey south.

This tiny Volcano Hummingbird delighted us on the last morning of our October Costa Rica trip. This one is a female and spent lots of time at these beautiful purple flowers, it was impossible to resist taking lots of photos.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird.... I think this maybe a juvie. I've had a little time to sit out with these guys and observe them. There is 2 adult males, which I am very surprised. I have never seen 2 males in our yard at once. I put out 3 feeders this year and put them all very far apart. There is also a female and at least one juvie that I have seen so far.
This Rufous Hummingbird perched at the top of a thin branch and used it as a base to hunt insects and guard its territory.
I'm back and catching up! Can't wait to see all my Flickr friends new photos. We still have quite a few hummingbirds in our area.
Thanks so much for the faves and nice comments!
I couldn't resist the opportunity to try and capture a hummingbird in flight whilst in St Lucia. However with so many plants in bloom and the speed with which these small birds travel it wasn't easy. This shot taken early in the morning of a female Antillean Crested Hummingbird was the best I could manage.
Well my trip ended up being cancelled, instead I ended up in emergency surgery to have my appendics removed on Tuesday night, returned home yesterday...
These hummingbirds were at a friends, maybe 30 to 40 of them!!
Will visit as often as my energy level allows!
Female Ruby Throated Hummingbird taken from my flower garden. I have seen a few males but none have cooperated yet. Maybe I will get a male before the summers over. ( explore # 81 ) my thanks to everyone
Colorado Springs, CO - I know there are hummingbirds returning to our area now, but we had a little snow overnight and it has been fairly chilly this week. I wonder if they are rethinking their travel plans?
Shot at the Huntington Library Gardens. Right now, they have so many hummingbirds. It's a wonderful time of year to visit there.
I hope you're enjoying my hummingbird collection. These shots are all from this year... :)
Thanks again for joining me here.

This hummingbird was run off by 2 others shortly after this was snapped out the window...nothing unusual about that.
We have started to see them over the past week or so.
Sue put up some newly acquired feeders today which now total 4. We found a super buy on them this morning at the local TSC. (Tractor Supply Store Canada)
They were quickly pressed into use.
Photographing hummingbirds in the shade, use single focus point and place on the eye, find bird that will stay in one place for a second or two, use camera with eight fps or faster, use a fast lens with a close focus distance, I use an extension tube to get down to eight feet from ten.
We usually have a few hummers every year...this year it seems we only have one skittish female that visits here and there. Yesterday I took my camera out in the backyard to have near me in the event she showed while we were eating lunch...much to my surprise, she made my day with a visit to the lantana hanging basket and also to my crocosomia lucifer.
