Nice surprise at my feeder today, a female or juvenile Anna's hummer. I've had one late like this for the past three years even into December. Always brightens a gloomy fall day!
Took this at Butterfly World in Coconut Creek Florida. They have a whole section called "Jewels of the sky". Humming birds dart around you at amazing speeds.
Mr. HelloYarn got all David Attenborough on the hummingbirds today and waited until they bravely came near to drink so he could take photos.
They're funny little buggers, starting fights with each other and hogging the food.

As of yesterday the hummingbird babies have fledged. These were taken in the last couple of days before they left the nest. They got to be quite cute

The best detail I could get from this whole weekend... I was using a 70-200 f2.8 lens borrowed from my brother in law. We were shooting these birds in crossfire so we could be assured that one of us would get the shot!
Hummingbird Clearwing also known as a Hummingbird Moth (Hemaris thysbe) seen in my neighborhood in South Burlington, VT.
A hummingbird can stand still for minutes, like this one, which kindly posed for a long time. But when it moves, it does it very quickly!

This little guy showed up at my feeder this AM. A first at my house in Virginia. He was still here this afternoon.
I guess today was "Bird Day".
As fall is in full gear I'm seeing less and less insects when I go out. But what I did see today on my visit to the Parent's house was 5 hummingbirds. They were VERY active today. They like to land on very specific perches, but they don't stay long. I started off with the 70-200mm lens, but wasn't getting the sharpness I wanted. Switched to the 100mm and moved closer. The hummingbirds are so used to people being in the yard, they let me get as close as 1-1/2 ft. away from them. Clicking away... They didn't seem to care at all that I was there. They sounded like little helicopters buzzing about, sometimes coming inches from my head. I think all of today's photos have been cropped, some more than others. Not a bad bunch of photos for an hour in the garden.
I realize some of today's photos may be a little repetitive. But as you know I license under (CC), so people may be looking for a specific photo or pose that would suit their needs.
