"Hey, what's that bird sitting in the tree? REALLY? A hummingbird?! Sweet!" Mhm...that was the conversation in my head. This little guy was WAAAAY up in the tree so this is a serious crop. But hey, it's a hummingbird...and until I get a better chance at one closer to me...this is what you get :)
Hummingbird at 1/750th second using Pentas istDS DSLR and 70-220mm Soligor ED macro zoom set at max zoom in macro focus. Distance is 4 feet.
This photo was cropped from 6.1 megapixels and I applied a logarithmic brightness scale of 25 to it to get the feather detail where I could see it.
After retiring, my dad bought a Nikon and started having some fun with photography. He decided to do a hummingbird safari with Brent Paull. He had so much fun, that when he got home, he and mom put a bunch of bird feeders up on the front porch and the Bovey Bird Sanctuary, complete with wine and cheese safaris, was born.
The last time I was down there, Dad set up his flash on a tripod, and set it so that both his Nikon and my Nikon could trigger it. I never shoot birds, so this was something new for me to try.
I got one or two good images, but it was fun to try, and I got to spend some time with Dad taking pictures.
Nice surprise at my feeder today, a female or juvenile Anna's hummer. I've had one late like this for the past three years even into December. Always brightens a gloomy fall day!
Took this at Butterfly World in Coconut Creek Florida. They have a whole section called "Jewels of the sky". Humming birds dart around you at amazing speeds.
