I believe these are juvenile males...VERY territorial, but once in a while, they seem to tolerate each other at the feeder.

This Rufous Hummingbird has been my feeder policeman for the last several days, chasing away any competitors for the feeders. He has a very heavily stippled throat, and in some photos, his mainly rufous-colored tail is evident. The tail feathers are slightly pointed, a trait I'd expect to get more pronounced when he returns next year. All these traits suggest he's a juvenile male, but it's hard to know for sure.

it was so cold this morning, i replenished the hummingbirds' food. the feeder hadn't even stopped swinging before a visitor landed.

I thought this was interesting, the way the feathers on the throat change color depending on the angle of the light.

Juvenile male, at my feeder. An adult female 'owns' the feeder, and she aggressively chases him away. But he does get an opportunity from time to time.

Rufous Hummingbirds show up in Los Alamos around July 4th. This is either an adult female or a juvenile male; because of the time of year, I suspect this is an adult female. The deep red color on her belly is a reflection from the red feeder she is hovering above.

I peaked out my kitchen window and he was preening in the rain this morning. So i quietly opened the window and got a few shots of him stretching before he took off.

My friend Candice has a Hummingbird Bush, and it attracts lots of hummingbirds. They're very pretty.

I have been working on getting decent pictures of hummingbirds since we put in a feeder. This is one of the first ones I have been pleased with.

Bare SB800 speed lights to either side at about 1/8 power, f 13, 1/250 sec, ISO 200 making the flash effectively the shutter speed. I have put my camera on "quiet shutter" mode as it seems the hummingbirds respond to a louder shutter. I am also using a radio remote trigger to "click the shutter".
