Several juvenile Selasphorus rufus, or Rufous Hummingbirds, were fighting over a feeder near my door on June 29, 2016.
A photo from my archives...The hummingbird are not here yet(Quebec city) at least, i didn't see them.. last year i saw my first one May 14... but i was near Montreal, now we live in Quebec city witch is more east and North.... So any day my friends will be here....
I was bummed that I only had 5 minutes to try to capture these little guys. I finally got some settings that sort of worked about the time we had to go. Paintshop Pro to the rescue!
Most of the "locals" have left and I'm not getting as many migrants. Actually, the number of birds I have been seeing all month has been rather low. Hopefully, that isn't a sign of anything bad. We had an awfully hot dry summer.
Above is a juvenile male at my favorite photo feeder (which the raccoons managed to break the other night - just had to add some more red duct tape and a zip tie so that I can still hang the thing).
I shot this on white for (hopefully) commercial use. I boosted the ISO to 800 to get a shutter speed of 1/2500 at f/8. Hopefully not too much noise or the agency will bounce it. Downsizing helps that a bit.
