Hummingbirds are birds from the Americas that constitute the family Trochilidae. They are among the smallest of birds, most species measuring 7.5–13 cm in length.

Hummingbirds here don't share very well. As soon as a 2nd one comes the first one is chased away. It's only been a couple times I've seen more than one hummingbird at the feeder not fighting.

I was bummed out today - all set to get killer shots of my baby Tree Swallows, but they left early this morning. Rats!

I consoled myself by doing a photo session with this Ruby-throated Hummingbird that is patrolling my yard. This is the "blotchy " male. His rival has more traditional plumage, but has to sneak in to feed.

On another front, I bought a box of meal worms this week for the birds to feed their kids. The Bluebirds found and love them (still waiting for the eggs to hatch), but the rest of the birds have yet to find them. Maybe 5,000 was too many . . . .

Just got back from a week at my parents house in Delaware, I didn't it make it to Bombay Hook NWR this time, but I managed to get this shot in their backyard. I think this is a Ruby throated Hummingbird, but am not 100% sure. Feel free to comment if you know what it is.

Caught him with fading sunlight, 1/200 @f/6.7 ISO 800 with the 500mm (300mm with 1.7TC)

I was finally able to catch the hummingbirds in a sunny spot, which is very helpful if you want to freeze the fast wing action of these birds. This shot was taken using my Tamron 28-300mm lens (focal length at 120mm), a tripod, and a long shutter release cord. Color boosting and a slight crop was also used.

Costa's Hummingbird

My mother-in-law has a hummingbird feeder. This male is one of three hummingbirds that regularly feed there.

I was using a Takumar 70-200mm manual focus lens from my 35mm days (effective focal length ~105-300mm on the digital SLR), zoomed to the maximum focal length. I cropped the hummingbird from the full frame in Photoshop to minimize background distractions.

This chubby hummingbird has been chasing all the other hummingbirds away, this might explain why he's so chubby. :)
