C'était la première fois que j'assistais au toilettage de ce si petit oiseau. Femelle colibri à gorge rubis. Elle a lissée ses plumes et même pris soin de frotter son long bec sur cette petite branche devant elle. Impressionnant... Archilochus colubris, Ruby-throated Humminbirg.
During the summer, the ruby-throated hummingbirds buzz around the three feeders we have, and earlier this year, I was able to get some photos of them.
Ruby-throated hummingbirds leave in the late summer/early fall for their winter feeding grounds in Mexico - most of them, anyway. A few hang out along the Gulf coast, but after late September, you won't see any in middle Georgia or further north.
Most folks bring their feeders in by Labor Day or soon after, and put them away until spring and the expected return of the ruby-throats.
While researching when the real, true end of hummingbird season occurs in Georgia (for the first time - we'd decided to leave the feeders up as long as possible this year), it turned out that migrating ruby-throats could be dropping by throughout September.
I also learned that there are species of hummingbird that actually winter in Georgia! Who knew?
With that in mind, we'll be keeping feeders out all year long, possibly only bringing them in overnight on deep freeze nights - the birds drop into torpor during really cold times, anyway...
This evening, I was able to capture these images of this little lady who dropped by our feeders... this is a female roufus hummingbird, a group that mostly winters in Mexico but is increasingly found spending winters throughout the southeast US.
We'll keep an eye out, and try to catch others dropping in for a quick snack...
The weather has turned colder now. I hope I still have a hummingbird visitor or two still... my feeders got very dirty while in the hospital. Today, we cleaned them and I am making more food. We'll see....
Hummingbirds are birds from the Americas that constitute the family Trochilidae. They are among the smallest of birds, most species measuring 7.5–13 cm in length.
Hummingbirds here don't share very well. As soon as a 2nd one comes the first one is chased away. It's only been a couple times I've seen more than one hummingbird at the feeder not fighting.
I was finally able to catch the hummingbirds in a sunny spot, which is very helpful if you want to freeze the fast wing action of these birds. This shot was taken using my Tamron 28-300mm lens (focal length at 120mm), a tripod, and a long shutter release cord. Color boosting and a slight crop was also used.
