Earlier this week, I fixed our whole-house humidifier, which nearly doubled the humidity inside our 120-year-old house. I think it had been slowly dying for a couple years. With the indoor humidity at near record levels, there was plenty of moisture leaking through our single pane windows and freezing onto the storm windows when the temps dipped down to 5F this morning. When it gets that cold, we get some of the coolest patterns in the window frost. When that frost is back-lit by the sunrise or (in this case) the traffic lights outside our house, the results can be amazing.
This was shot with my Canon 7D and Nikon Micro-Nikkor 55/1.8 AIS lens. This photo is about 2" wide in real life. I did only minimal post-processing on these photos--typically just curves & sharpening. What you see here is pretty much what came straight off the camera.

Oh no, just when I was looking forward to getting a good night's sleep, I saw this scary clown coming out of my humidifier right before turning the light out.

Constant humidifier keeps the petals moist...to simulate Sumatra's climate.
"Lois", the corpse flower, Titan Arum, Amorphophallus titanum at Houston's Museum of Natural Science. For a week Lois has promised to show us her smelly stuff but as of the first of this week the shy Titan Arum flower remained closed...for days the museum has been crowded with expectant visitors coming in around the clock....increasing the HMNS attendance 400%. To help nudge the flower's blooming stage, a museum horticulturist placed a bag of rotting bananas near the plant...decomposing fruit releases ethylene, a natural plant hormone that could do the trick. When she does open her flower completed it will smell like rotted meat and in the wild the stench attracts attracts pollinating carrion beetles. Lois is native to Sumatra and will be only the second corpse flower to bloom in Texas. The first was the 61 inch tall "Big Jack" at Stephen F. Austin State University's Mast Arboretum in 2004. Twenty-eight corpse flowers have bloomed in the USA. The museum's streaming live video online proved so popular, its computer system crashed this week. Rice University is now supporting the video stream at www.hmns.org . The anticipated stinky opening is now predicted for this weekend!!! This is an endangered plant that has the largest and stinkiest inflorescence in the world. HMNS's "Lois" is currently above the 6 foot tall mark!! Okay. I went back and got it. It's in perfect shape and works beautifully. If there is one thing Michigan has a lot of, it's vintage humidifiers and old wool blankets in good shape!

Humidified Tandem Differential Mobility Analyzer.
Starting in October 2012, the second ARM Mobile Facility (AMF2) was deployed on the Horizon Lines cargo ship Spirit for the year-long Marine ARM GPCI1 Investigation of Clouds (MAGIC) campaign, traveling between Los Angeles, California, and Honolulu, Hawaii. The purpose of the deployment was to understand and parameterize clouds, precipitation, aerosols and radiation, and the interactions among them.
