Somewhere in Big Sur, a tiny creek has carved a little canyon that houses a forest of wild Calla lilies. The canyon is dull and nondescript during rest of the year. But in spring, when these lilies bloom, the valley metamorphoses into a stunner. The tiny creek – flowing fast in its rush to melt with the Pacific – provides acoustics to the experience, while the visual is taken care of by Calla themselves. The word Calla comes from the Greek term καλλος (kallos) meaning beauty. One couldn’t have named this valley any better.

A place of such beauty is never short of admirers. Like every other inch of this stunning Californian coastal region, photographers know the Calla Lily canyon only too well. In Spring, hundreds of photographers of all kinds show up in this little valley to find their Calla. But beauty is a hard thing to find in a crowd. Hordes of photographers, tripods and simpers — especially at sunset — must make this place resent its name. Like the Mesa arch in the morning or the Horseshoe bend at sunset, one could call this place a circus and not offend anyone.

To avoid the circus and instead enjoy this valley, Rishabh and I visited and photographed the canyon several times throughout the day. The flowers had raindrops on them in the morning and looked gorgeous in the peaceful late morning cloudy light. In the late afternoon, the golden sun flirted with these flowers that in turn glowed in shy orange. Funny thing is, every image shot during these two visits includes three-six human figures. Yikes, I hate cloning (out) human beings!

So, I did what the feeblest in the family does during a feud over the cake: waited in the corner. It helped that the adjacent beach was a beauty that kept Rishabh and me totally engrossed for those couple of hours. After the sun set, the light and the army of photographers faded quickly and equally. I asked Rishabh if he would let me shoot in the Calla valley one more time and my nice kid said yes. As somber descended on the land, I was the only one shooting. Setting up my tripod and long exposures, I hoped that the wind stays put. It did. When the first image displayed on the viewfinder after thirty long seconds of exposing, I smiled like a baby. Finally, after a long day, I had found my Calla.

Life of humans begins with birth, reaching the strongest point at adulthood and gradually move towards the end. Tried recreating the concept.

On the Eastern Freeway.

Took a drive to reach this location just before the sun set that wasn't. The wind was howling so hard into the lens I had to hold my tripod down and hope things wouldn't be too shaky. Not too bad, this one; some others looked like the pylons were high, not just tall.

This is an in-camera composite shot at 3.2s x maybe 3 times over. Makes some unusual 'stop-start' marks in the sky .. which, I guess, I could have tried to fix, but didn't.

RYNEK UNDERGROUND

Human skull found under the surface of the Rynek Glòwny in the centre of Krakòw.

Opened in a blaze of publicity in September 2010, this hi-tech and highly popular museum takes visitors four metres under the surface of the market square to explore the recently excavated medieval merchant stalls that predate today’s Cloth Hall, and to experience the city’s entire history - from its first settlers right up to the death of Pope John Paul II – over the course of some 6,000 metres of multimedia exhibits.

My submission for biocup 2020! The theme is future for the first round. I believe humans will gradually upgrade their flesh into metal and machinery as we are unable to stave off climate change result in a much harser environment.

Vulnerability

Normally I'd just leave my builds to be interpreted how they might be, but this one has a couple of ideas behind it.

The micro build is supposed to contrast the massive nature of the bomb, the white is supposed to represent order vs the opposite in the blast, the minifig statue has it's head buried in the ground and is inverted to symbolise egocentricity and chaos, the bomb is made up of minifigure accessories (and the statue) that are all human constructions, the dent in the environment represents the damaging nature of what we do.

I tried to make the bomb significantly different to the one I did in this shot also. flic.kr/p/pYRTKC

Life in the fast lane is life in tubes. Machines moving humans - and this is the future. There is beauty within machines and I tried to bring it out here. These are escalators (elevators for my US friends) for taking passengers from the city rail metro station in Epping, Sydney to ground level upstairs.

Caution: Do not enter the station with camera gear with an intent to shoot the station or any of the Sydney trains property with a camera. Mobile photography is fine so shoot at will with your mobile phones and share to whichever corner of the world you want to, but DSLRs - they are security threats. This is the unique way of tackling security issues in this part of the world. Go figure!

As I walked down a street, I first noticed the garbage bags. Quickly, I made out a foot. In the midst of the trash lay a fellow human.
