A very young Hamadras Baboon nibbles tenderly on a blade of grass. I was lucky; This infant was sitting just centimeters from the edge of the exhibit.
Hamadras baboons exhibit very interesting social behavior. Adults often care for the young of others in a very complex hierarchal system which is strikingly similar to ours. Juveniles are very playful, and were seen doing backflips, playing catch, and bullying younger monkeys.
This is probably the fourth or fifth time I have admired these lovely animals at the zoo, and I often find that I spend the most time here out of all the exhibits. They are captivating to watch. One can't help but wonder: How different are we, really?

The baboon has an unusual four-level social system called a multilevel society. Most social interaction occurs within small groups called one-male units or harems containing one male and up to ten females which the males lead and guard. A harem will typically include a younger "follower" male who may be related to the leader. Two or more harems unite repeatedly to form clans. Within clans, the dominant males of the units are probably close relatives of one another and have an age-related dominance hierarchy. Bands are the next level. Two to four clans form bands of up to 200 individuals which usually travel and sleep as a group. Both males and females rarely leave their bands. The dominant males will prevent infants and juveniles from interacting with infants and juveniles from other bands. Bands may fight with one another over food, etc., and the adult male leaders of the units are usually the combatants. Bands also contain solitary males that are not harem leaders or followers and move freely within the band. Several bands may come together to form a troop. Several bands in a troop also often share a cliff-face where they sleep.

Inaugura Gobernador Padrés puente elevado en Empalme.
Empalme, Sonora.- Con una inversión de 40 millones de pesos para beneficiar miles de sonorenses, sobre todo del municipio de Empalme, el Gobernador Guillermo Padrés inauguró el puente elevado del bulevar Ignacio Ramírez que pasa sobre las vías del ferrocarril y se une con la Carretera Internacional.
Acompañado por Francisco Javier Caraveo Rincón, Alcalde de este municipio, el mandatario estatal reiteró que Empalme cuenta con todo el apoyo del Gobierno del Estado y si bien este año se ha dado una cantidad histórica de inversiones, el próximo año será el mejor.
“Claro que se lo merece Empalme y los empalmenses, eso y mucho más, y vamos por más, y aquí públicamente a todos los digo que el Presidente Municipal tiene todo el apoyo del Gobernador y que el año que entrante va a ser el mejor año para Empalme”, aseveró.
José Inés Palafox Núñez, Secretario de Infraestructura y Desarrollo Urbano, explicó que con el puente se abren más oportunidades al agilizar las vías de circulación.
Mientras que Caraveo Rincón, como Alcalde del Municipio, comentó que gracias a la sinergia entre niveles de Gobierno Empalme ha tenido la mayor cantidad de recursos de proyectos en su historia.
“Hemos visto como cuando trabajamos todos juntos Gobierno municipal, estatal y federal, quien gana es la gente y estamos seguros que vienen los mejores tiempos para Empalme, para el Estado y por supuesto para nuestro México”, indicó.
A la inauguración del puente acudieron como invitados César Adrián Lizárraga Hernández, Alcalde de Guaymas; Luis Gerardo Serrato Castell, Director del Centro SCT Sonora y Moisés Laguna Torres, Diputado Local por Empalme.
Pero sobre todo se dieron cita cientos de ciudadanos de Guaymas y Empalme que resultan beneficiados de forma directa con la obra, como Josefina Villa Rodríguez, residente del municipio rielero quien agradeció a las autoridades en nombre de sus vecinos.
“Yo creo que ya era tiempo de que esa obra se realizara, esa absolutamente necesaria, es mayor el beneficio que nos va a brindar esta obra”, mencionó.
La vecina acompañó al Gobernador Padrés cuando recorrió el puente a pie acompañado de cientos de empalmenses que se tomaron fotografías con él y le mostraron su cariño.
También acudieron al evento Mario Cuen Aranda, Director de Impulsor y Javier Tapia Camou, Coordinador General de la Comisión de Fomento al Turismo, quienes acompañan al Gobernador en su gira de trabajo.
