The cycle rickshaw is a small-scale local means of transport; it is also known by a variety of other names such as bike taxi, velotaxi, pedicab, bikecab, cyclo, beca, becak, trisikad, or trishaw.

As opposed to rickshaws pulled by a person on foot, cycle rickshaws are human-powered by pedaling. Another type of rickshaw is the auto rickshaw.

They are a type of tricycle designed to carry passengers on a for hire basis. Cycle rickshaws are widely used in major cities around the world, but most commonly in cities of South, Southeast and East Asia.

OVERVIEW

The cycle rickshaw was built in the 1880s and was first used with regularity starting in 1929 in Singapore. Six years later they outnumbered pulled rickshaws. Cycle rickshaws were found in every south and east Asian country by 1950. By the late 1980s there were estimated 4 million cycle rickshaws in the world.

The vehicle is generally pedal-driven by a driver, though some are equipped with an electric motor to assist the driver.

The vehicle is usually a tricycle, though some quadracycle models exist, and some bicycles with trailers are configured as cycle rickshaws. Some cycle rickshaws have gas or electric motors.

PASSENGER CONFIGURATION

The configuration of driver and passenger seats vary. Generally the driver sits in front of the passengers to pedal the rickshaw. There are some designs, though, where the cyclist driver sits behind the passengers. In many Asian countries, like India and China, the passenger seat is located behind the driver, while in Indonesia, Malaysia and Vietnam the driver sits behind the passenger seat. In the Philippines, the passenger seats are usually located beside the driver in a side car. Similarly, in Singapore the trishaw and in Burma the sai kaa the passengers sit alongside the driver.

NOMENCLATURE

The cycle rickshaw is a small-scale local means of transport; it is also known by a variety of other names, such as: velotaxi and bikecab. Cyclo is used in Vietnam and Cambodia. Pedicab is used in the United Kingdom and United States In Buffalo, New York, this type of vehicle is known as a bike taxi.

Beca, becak, trisikad, or trishaw are non-English names used in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Velotaxi is used in Germany.

COUNTRY OVERVIEW

Cycle rickshaws are used in Asian countries, but also in countries outside Asia, such as large European and some North America cities. They are used primarily for their novelty value, as an entertaining form of transportation for tourists and locals, but they also have environmental benefits and may be quicker than other forms of transport if traffic congestion is high. Cycle rickshaws used outside Asia often are mechanically more complex, having multiple gears, more powerful brakes, and in some cases electrical motors to provide additional power.

Pretty typical depiction of how insanely artsy my friends are - Kaiya is playing some original tunes, while Lili draws a face on a balloon. (Taken at the surprise tea party Olga threw for Lili this past Sunday.)

Being an Australian, there is nothing like travelling half way around the world to watch a show by another bunch of Australians! The last memories i had of Human Nature was them being a daggy boy band that my mum liked. Having now grown up a little, i have to say the guys were great, and it is good to see a genre which showcases their great voices, personalities and showman ship (unlike the pop music of the late 90s).

A human interest story is a feature story that discusses a person or people in an emotional way. It presents people and their problems, concerns, or achievements in a way that brings about interest or sympathy in the reader or viewer.

Human interest stories may be the story behind the story about an event, organization or otherwise faceless historical happening, such as about the life of an individual soldier during war-time, an interview with a survivor of a natural disaster, or profile of someone known for a career achievement.

Human interest stories are sometimes criticized as "soft" news, or manipulative, sensationalistic programming. Major human interest stories are presented with a view to entertain the readers or viewers while informing them. Terry Morris, an early proponent of the genre said she took “considerable license with the facts that are given to me.

The Ringling Bros. Circus was founded in Baraboo, WI, in 1884 by the five local Ringling brothers: Al, Alf T., Charles, John and Otto. The world-famous circus wintered in Baraboo for a total of 34 years, through the winter of 1918. In that time period, the show grew from a very small operation employing a handful of people, to a circus empire

consisting of the three largest circuses in America, each employing over a thousand.

Their circus winter quarters in Baraboo became known to locals as "Ringlingville." The surviving buildings stand along the north bank of the Baraboo River, and date from 1897 through 1916. These buildings are the largest group of original circus structures in North America, and the Circus World area is now a National Historic Landmark Site.

I couldn’t take in the entire site in one visit, so I concentrated my, and my camera’s, attention on those things that were most appealing to me: the bright, colorful, over-the-top circus posters and parade wagons. Circus World houses an exceptional collection of circus ads and posters, as well as hundreds of parade wagons, carts, and railway cars, not only of Ringling Brothers’ shows, but of circuses all over the USA, and around the world.

if you ever get close to a human

and human behaviour

be ready be ready to get confused

there's definitely definitely definitely no logic

to human behaviour

but yet so yet so irresistible

and there's no map to human behaviour

they're terribly terribly terribly terribly moody

then all of a sudden turn happy

but, oh, to get involved in the exchange

of human emotions

is ever so ever so satisfying

and there's no map

and a compass wouldn't help at all.-

Set in suburban London, the story takes place in a parallel present where the latest must-have gadget for any busy family is a Synth – an android robot eerily similar to a human in nearly every respect.
